What manner of terrible flame springs from the water? It is the tongue of malice, which speaks with fire, And burns a ship at sea. The heretical emperor mocks Orthodoxy, And burns seventy friends with fire. It is the feast of Valens, a bestial emperor- A heretic is often more cruel than an unbeliever. Seventy deaths! For what crime? For having stood before the emperor's face with an appeal, Imploring that he spare the innocent- For this, he burned them with fire. The dry boat burned like straw in a stack, The flame ascended to heaven like an accusation: The men all knelt in the flames And raised up a prayer to God and the saints: ``Accept our sacrifice, O All-seeing God! Help us to sail to the Heavenly Kingdom!'' In the raging flames, the bodies gave off a fragrance, Like pure incense before the holy altar. These are the pure sacrifices of Holy Orthodoxy Strengthened by torture, and glorifying God. The sea cools the seventy bodies, And seventy souls take delight in Paradise! In the Church, their glory is proclaimed, But the disgraced Valens faces God's punishment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We offer this collection as a token of our affection and admiration of our friend and colleague James Weldon Thompson. . . . His studies of the letter to the Hebrews and of Paul in their intellectual contexts (especially Middle Platonism) have contributed significantly to the ongoing quest for placing the New Testament in its socio-intellectual setting. Although his publications in this area date back more than thirty years, his best work is occurring now, and we may anticipate path-breaking contributions ahead. His more recent work on preaching and pastoral care in Paul both situate the Apostle in his own world and, just as importantly, offer correctives of some contemporary ministerial practices and invitations for improvements. Since 1993 Thompson has served as the editor of Restoration Quarterly, a significant venue for research in biblical studies, church history (especially of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement), and contemporary theology. His more popular works make available to a lay audience thoughtful, well-informed, and spiritually rewarding interpretations of much of the New Testament. "His achievements, however, do not end at the printing press. For more than thirty years, he has taught ministers and others at the Institute for Christian Studies (now Austin Graduate School of Theology) and Abilene Christian University. Students of the past and the present speak of him as a prepared, stimulating, and creative teacher unafraid of experimentation for a new generation of learners. At both institutions he also served as an administrator, first as President of ICS and then as Associate Dean of ACU's Graduate School of Theology. His colleagues respect his ability to enlist them for work as needed and otherwise to get out of their way, certainly a too rare set of skills in university administrators!" --from the Preface

The A to Z of the Orthodox Church provides students, researchers, and specialists with a desk encyclopedia of the theology and theologians, saints, sinners, places and events of the Eastern Church. Two millennia of the religion are surveyed in over five hundred concise entries, concentrating primarily on the last 150 years. Includes an overview of the early Church through the Byzantine and Russian Empires, into the present multinational Orthodox presence in the ecumenical movement. Many of the general entries cannot be found elsewhere in English, and the comprehensive compilation of biographies of 19th- and 20th-century Orthodox theologians (American, Russian, Greek, and many other nationalities) is published here for the first time. This book includes a detailed 4,000-year chronology, illustrations, extensive bibliography, and an appendix listing the current canonical patriarchs and autocephalous churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Death is a great sacrament. It is the birth of a person from this earthly, temporary life, into eternity."Throughout human history the existence and nature of a world beyond that which is visible to our material eyes has been a subject of intense debate. In this third volume of St Ignatius' s collected works the saint addresses the widespread lack of comprehension of this unseen realm and expounds the necessity of understanding it correctly in accordance with the Truth that is the Orthodox Faith. He examines the mystical boundaries that govern the life of a Christian: the one, between life and death; and the other, between the visible, physical realm and the invisible to most— but no less real— spiritual realm. He draws deeply on the patristic teachings of Christian saints of the first millennium, in particular St Basil the Great, St Isaac the Syrian, St John of Damascus, and St John of the Ladder. He weaves in quotations from the Psalms and other Scriptural texts as well as liturgical hymns. He exhorts his readers to prepare themselves to cross the threshold into their final heavenly home: to cross from earthly into eternal life.Included here is St Ignatius' s “ Homily on Death,” one of his most popular writings in its original language. The reader will also encounter St Ignatius' s teachings on the nature of the soul and the essence of incorporeal beings, the latter theologoumena being a point of contention between the author and his contemporary, St Theophan the Recluse. The text is complemented by a comprehensive Scripture index, a subject index, and a short biography of the author.

Book excerpt: "Eastern Orthodoxy illuminated by the Gospel is one of the greatest books ever written about the Orthodoxy. Reading the book Eastern Orthodoxy illuminated by the Gospel is like climbing a high mountain, where your visual field gets expanded with each step, discovering new and exciting details, and finally gives an exceptional panoramic view that evokes the strongest feelings! Each new line is like a new stair leading to a highest top, from where you can observe the whole Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy from God's perspective. Light of the glorious Gospel and Christ's teachings shines like the sun throughout this book, illuminating a complete profession of faith of the Eastern Orthodox Church." Sladjan Djuric Author of the book Only Scripture, Serbia "I have never understood why Eastern Orthodox people practice or believe certain things. When I would ask, I would either get silence or a very confusing and superficial answer. Ivica's book made those mysterious things clear for the first time and helped me understand the essence and the roots of the Orthodox religion. Without exaggeration I think this is a first-class apologetic manual ever written. Everyone who is called to work with Orthodox believers should have this book because it can help them understand the people who practice Eastern Orthodoxy, and give them directions how to pray and preach the Gospel more efficiently (2. Corinthians 4:3-4, Ephesians 6:12).'' Jan Vareca Editor of a Christian e-magazine 'The trumpet of Zion', Serbia "Eastern Orthodoxy has been largely unknown in the West, but in the recent years there has been a surge of interest, particularly among Christians of Protestant/Evangelical orientation, many of whom wish to find out more about this mystical expression of faith that captivates by its ancient charm and connection to the early church fathers. The book Eastern Orthodoxy Illuminated by the Gospel by Ivica Stamenkovic will unlock the mysteries of Eastern Orthodoxy for the Western readers. A native of Serbia, a country with a strong Eastern Orthodox majority, Ivica had the advantage of studying Eastern Orthodoxy at its source. The product of his studies is a volume that deserves to be called nothing less than a textbook on Eastern Orthodoxy and probably the first of its kind available in the English language. His clear, scholarly approach leaves no stones unturned. Needless to say, a study such as this one has been long overdue in the West. Even though scholarly, the book is by no means "dry" and is an enjoyable read, cover to cover." Alex Jovanovic Pastor of Mooretown Brethren in Christ Church Sandusky, Michigan, USA

Book excerpt: Few works exist on Byzantine literature as literature and still fewer studies of individual texts. This reading of the letter-collection (c.1090-c.1110) of Theophylact of Ochrid employs a variety of approaches to characterise a work which is both a literary artefact in a long Greek tradition and the only trace of a complex network of friends, colleagues, patrons and clients within Byzantine Bulgaria and also within the empire as a whole. These letters are of great importance from the point of view of local economic or ecclesiastical history, relations with the Slavs, the arrival of the First Crusade, but have not hitherto been studied as an example of Byzantine letter writing. This was a genre taken seriously by Byzantines, offering us unique insight into the mentality of the Byzantine elite, but also into what the Byzantines regarded as literature. This book is important as an attempt to raise the status of the study of Byzantine literature, and of letters within that literature. It is a first attempt to place an epistolary text in a succession of literary and historical contexts; its aim, too, is to probe the reliability of any rhetorical text for straightforward biography especially at the time of the revival fiction in Byzantium. At the heart of the book is an analysis of the personal network of Theophylact, as presented in the collection, with further methodological discussion of network analysis in medieval texts.

Book excerpt: For fans of Bad Blood and Too Big to Fail, an explosive, page-turning account of one of the largest financial frauds in US history, chronicling the utopian promises, human collateral, and incineration of billions of dollars in the 2022 crypto crash, by Time magazine’s technology correspondent. As cryptocurrency rose in popularity during the pandemic, new converts bought into the idea that crypto would not only make them rich, but would usher in imminent revolutions across art, finance, politics, and gaming. Cryptocurrency caught the zeitgeist through figures like FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who only two years later would be convicted of one of the most calamitous acts of financial fraud in US history. During his meteoric rise, Sam Bankman-Fried outflanked idealists in the movement like Vitalik Buterin, who sought to build fairer, more democratic systems through Ethereum. Bankman-Fried pursued a growth-obsessed, by-any-means approach to crypto, which proved seductive to those who just wanted to get rich. But this Silicon Valley-like approach also drove the creation of a spate of high-risk financial instruments that mirrored those of the 2008 financial crisis. Accused of misleading investors and mishandling funds, Bankman-Fried became a target of prosecutors. Now, Cryptomania unfolds the tumultuous twenty months inside this male-dominated, overhyped industry that led to its downfall. Drawing on exclusive reporting and an extensive network in the global NFT community, Andrew Chow chronicles the battle for crypto’s soul, and the human toll of its economic meltdown—from the conmen and eccentrics driving the bubble to the victims caught in its burst.
