Book excerpt: Inland waterways are a host for a mode of transport that is not as visible to the general public or as used as it once was. It is, however, generally perceived to be very important to our freight transport system today, although a closer look into the inland waterway transport system rebuts this perception and reveals the strengths and opportunities of this mode of transportation. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of the current role of inland waterway transport as a freight transport system and its conditions. Drawing on case studies from across Europe, this text explores the economic, logistic, and technological and policy issues related to inland waterway transport and the challenges that changes in these areas present to this transport mode. It also explores the strategies for the inland waterway transport sector to secure and then enlarge its role in the future of freight transport. Inland Waterway Transport will be an invaluable source for students and researchers of transport studies. In addition, the book will be useful to policymakers and practitioners involved in its development. It may also appeal to wider readers with an interest in the fascinating business of inland waterway transport.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Inland Waterways: Their Relation to Railway Transportation and to the National Welfare; Their Creation, Restoration and Maintenance; With 80 Illustrations and a Map The disappearance of commerce from our water ways seemed like a striking instance of the death of the unfit in the struggle for commercial existence. The experience of other nations shows that this is not so. Fitness to live for human service is quite another matter from fitness to survive in the contests of the jungle. We fit the earth for use by determining what organisms shall survive. We must so bend the ener gies of the agencies of land transportation as to allow the waterway to live as a tool of trade, to the benefit of the whole nation, including the railways. Having found the way by which the railways may be prevented from killing water-borne traffic, we must make our waterways fit for their work. Traffic will follow even the shallow river or canal, if protected from uneconomic competition, but it is wasteful to compel trade to follow the water unless those facilities are provided which are necessary to make water traffic economical. A first requisite of cheap water transport is depth of water. The great trunk lines of traffic, like the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, the Ohio, the Missouri, the Columbia, and the Tennessee must be given depths in proportion to their functions. The Mississippi must be made a loop of the sea, and given connection with Lake Michigan as our part of the continental back water of which Canada will build her part, and thus gain the whip-hand over us if we do not build ours. But most of our waterways must in the nature of the case be rather shallow, and our problems with them are to be found in matters of terminals and the types of vessels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Waterways Problem The report of the Inland Waterways Commission, appointed by the President in March of 1907, again calls attention to the urgent need of some drastic measures which will relieve the coun try from the inadequate facilities for the removal of the enormous tonnage which the nation produces. In referring to the report in his message the President characterizes it as the conservative, sane and just judgment of a body of exceptionally well qualified ex perts, and adds that if it errs-at all it is by over-conservatism. The subject of which it deals is of critical importance, both to the present and to the future of our country. Being in full accord with these sentiments and realizing the urgency of a speedy conclusion which shall make provision for the opening of the magnificent systems which the United States af fords for internal transportation by water, it seems appropriateto review briefly the actual situation and the remedies suggested. Not in a spirit of criticism, but with a View to an early remedy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 6,000km of navigable waterways, the Netherlands offers one of the most extensive yet compact cruising grounds in Europe. This book is a user's guide to the whole network, covering all the mast-up routes and excluding only those waterways which offer less than 3.5m bridge height. Navigational details are provided for each waterway, comprising dimensions and obstacles to be expected, including service arrangements for bridges and locks. This is followed by details of over 300 stopping places across all 12 provinces; some which are large or popular harbours, and others which are well off the beaten track. Comments on the significant features are expanded for nearly 100 'principal venues' where more details on things to do and see are provided, as well as information on practical facilities ashore and the authors' selective and subjective restaurant tips! The book is designed to be of interest to all crew members, not just the skipper or navigator, whether its to establish how to approach a place, or to discover what to do or see of interest on arrival. Easy to browse, the book's illustrations have been selected to give a flavour of this water-loving country as well as to prepare the visiting yachtsman, whether under power or sail. This second edition has been updated with amendments to the text and maps. There are also many new photos by the authors. Louise Busby's interest in boating has led to commissions for Motor Boats Monthly as well as the Cruising Association's magazine. She is a former CA regional Almanac editor for the Netherlands and Belgium.David Broad is a detailed journal writer and log keeper, many of David's notes and sketches have been used in the compilation of this book. He is a Council member of the Cruising Association and the Chairman of the Broom Owners Club. A website, which is a useful annexe to the book, is kept up to date with details of changes to the waterways along with useful links to further information.
