Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principle of Teleology in the Critical Philosophy of Kant Although it is true that the division of the Critical Philosophy into three parts rests upon the three-fold di vision Of mind, and that each Critique has special refer ence to one particular faculty, it would be quite mistaken to suppose that Kant consciously set about the critical inquiry, to discover, if possible, a priori principles for each of the three mental faculties. We know, on the contrary, fthat the original plan comprised only a Cri tique of theoretical philosophy, and a Critique Of practical philosophy, corresponding to the faculties of cognition and desire. The proof of this is derived from the famous letter to Herz of I772. Kant's words there are: I am planning a work under the title, The limits of Sen sibility and Reason. The work will consist Of two parts, a theoretical and a practical. The first falls into two sections: first, Phenomenology in general; and second, the nature and methods of Metaphysics. The second, likewise, falls into two parts: first, the general princi ples of feeling, of taste and of sensuous desires second. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay-a thesis accepted for the Cornell doctorate-consists of two parts, the first historical, the second expository and critical. Part I. traces the influences that led to the acceptance of a tripartite division of mind (intellect, feeling, will) in place of the older bipartite division. It also shows that Kant's original intention, in writing a third Critique, was to establish a priori principles of the new faculty of feeling; and argues that the combination of the Critiques of Taste and of Teleology into a single Critique of Judgment was due to the fact that both alike were seen to centre round the idea of purposiveness. Part II indicates the need of mediation, formal and real, between the two Critiques of theoretical and of practical philosophy. The real opposition between them is to be found, primarily and chiefly, in the admission or rejection of the concept of freedom. By an elaborate analysis of Kant s theory of the beautiful, and a discussion of his use of the principle of teleology as applied to organic nature, the author is able to make it clear that the Critique of Judgment effects the desired real reconciliation. A concluding section suggests that Kant would have allowed objective validity to the teleological principle, had not the table of categories in the K. d. r. V. been already complete. -Mind [1898]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work argues that teleological motives lie at the heart of Kant’s critical philosophy and that a precise analysis of teleological structures can both illuminate the basic strategy of its fundamental arguments and provide a key to understanding its unity. It thus aims, through an examination of each of Kant’s major writings, to provide a detailed interpretation of his claim that philosophy in the true sense must consist of a teleologia rationis humanae. The author argues that Kant’s critical philosophy forged a new link between traditional teleological concepts and the basic structure of rationality, one that would later inform the dynamic conception of reason at the heart of German Idealism. The process by which this was accomplished began with Kant’s development of a uniquely teleological conception of systematic unity already in the precritical period. The individual chapters of this work attempt to show how Kant adapted and refined this conception of systematic unity so that it came to form the structural basis for the critical philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically examines and elucidates the complex relationship between politics and teleology in Kant’s philosophical system. Examining this relationship is of key philosophical importance since Kant develops his political philosophy in the context of a teleological conception of the purposiveness of both nature and human history. Kant’s approach poses the dual task of reconciling his normative political theory with both his priori moral philosophy and his teleological philosophy of nature and human history. The fourteen essays in this volume, by leading scholars in the field, explore the relationship between teleology and politics from multiple perspectives. Together, the essays explore Kant’s normative political theory and legal philosophy, his cosmopolitanism and views on international relations, his theory of history, his theory of natural teleology, and the broader relationship between morality, history, nature and politics in Kant’s works. This important new volume will be of interest to a wide audience, including Kant scholars, scholars and students working on topics in moral and political philosophy, the philosophy of history, political theory and political science, legal scholars and international relations theorists, as well as those interested broadly in the history of ideas.

Book excerpt: Critique of Judgement Immanuel Kant - In the Critique of Judgement (1790) Kant offers a penetrating analysis of our experience of the beautiful and the sublime, discussing the objectivity of taste, aesthetic disinterestedness, the relation of art and nature, the role of imagination, genius and originality, the limits of representation and the connection between morality and the aesthetic. He also investigates the validity of our judgements concerning the apparent purposiveness of nature with respect to the highest interests of reason and enlightenment. The work profoundly influenced the artists and writers of the classical and romantic period and the philosophy of Hegel and Schelling. It has remained a central point of reference from Schopenhauer and Nietzsche through to phenomenology, hermeneutics, the Frankfurt School, analytical aesthetics and contemporary critical theory.

Book excerpt: Auxter challenges the prevailing view that Kant's ethic is ateleological and shows how Kant defines the goals humnan beings ought to pursue. Auxter begins by discussing the subtlety of the critical solutions to the classical problem of reconciling natural and moral teleologies. He systematically explores the teleological dimension of Kant's practical philosophy - explaining how goals are derived, how they fit together into a comprehensive moral order, and how the elaboration of this ideal affects the selection of a right action. Auxter argues for a new understanding of the relationship between virtue and right action, and concludes with a Kantian theory of moral commitment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most neglected sector of Kant's Critical Philosophy is his collec tion of remarks about biological phenomena in the second part of the Critique of Judgment, the Critique of Teleological Judgment. The reasons for this are numerous, but since in Kant, everything comes in threes, a three-fold collection will suffice. The Critique of Teleological Judgment itself is one reason. More than most of his writings, this segment of the Critical corpus suffers from what can most charitably be termed "mistakes of exposition. " In this part of the third Critique, it is commonplace to find sub-arguments in Kant's general position somewhere other than their logical niche. The result is that the general theme behind his remarks about living phenomena is obscured. This difficulty has done much to discourage even the most enthusiastic of Kant admirers from investing their time on this work. Secondly, in this century, until very recently, there has been little interest in philosophical questions about biology. Twenty-one out of thirty-one sections of the Critique of Teleological Judgment (sections #61 and 63-83) deal either directly or indirectly with issues of interest in the philosophy of biology. Finally, the Critique of Teleological Judgment has been placed among the last on that list "of writings thought to formulate Kant's Critical system. This is not merely because of its temporal position.
