Book excerpt: Neutrino beams from the decay of muons in a storage ring offer the prospect of very high flux, well-understood spectra, and equal numbers of electron and muon neutrinos, as desirable for detailed exploration of neutrino oscillations via long baseline detectors [1]. Such beams require. large numbers of muons, and hence a high performance target station at which a 1-4 MW proton beam of 16-24 GeV impinges on a compact target, all inside a high field solenoid channel to capture as much of the phase volume of soft pions as possible. A first concept was based on a carbon target, as reported in 2000 the Neutrino Factory Study-I [2]. A higher performance option based on a free mercury jet has been studied in 2001 as part of the Neutrino Factory Feasibility Study-II [3,4]. An overview of a mercury jet target facility is presented here, including requirements, design concept and summaries of simulated performance. Further details are presented in related papers at this conference.

Book excerpt: An integrated program is described, starting with muon experiments in the Booster era, continuing with a 2 MW target station, a 4 GeV Neutrino Factory and a 3 TeV Muon Collider, all driven by Project X. This idea provides an integrated approach to the Intensity and Energy Frontiers at Fermilab. Project X is a proposed high intensity proton facility intended to support a world-leading program in neutrino and flavor physics over the next two decades at Fermilab while also providing an upgrade path to drive a neutrino factory and/or a muon collider. Project X is an integral part of the Fermilab Roadmap as described in the Fermilab Steering Group Report of August 2007 and of the Intensity Frontier science program described in the P5 report of May 2008. The primary elements of that research program to be supported by Project X include: (1) A neutrino beam for long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. A new 2 megawatt proton source with proton energies between 50 and 120 GeV would produce intense neutrino beams, directed toward a large detector located in a distant underground laboratory. (2) Kaon and muon based precision experiments running simultaneously with the neutrino program. These could include a world leading muon-to-electron conversion experiment and world leading rare kaon decay experiments. (3) A path toward a muon source for a possible future neutrino factory and, potentially, a muon collider at the Energy Frontier. This path requires that the new proton source have significant upgrade potential beyond the initial uses. This paper suggests that an implementation of Project X based on a CW linac can be part of a continuous synergistic transition from a muon physics program in the 'Booster era' to the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider. It then describes a possible staging of the planned muon experiments and of Project X to provide a graceful transition from the Intensity Frontier to the Energy Frontier.

Book excerpt: The Target Support Facility for a Neutrino Producing Research Facility extends from the pretarget, primary beam focusing region to the end of the decay channel. Technical components include the target, beam absorber, and solenoid magnetic-field focusing system. While the ultimate goal is to target about 4 MW of proton beam in the target area., smaller values and different target materials (e.g., low Z) are considered to facilitate the first step. As detailed in this report, a carbon target was chosen with an incident primary beam power of 1.5 MW, The target is embedded in a high-field solenoid magnet of 20 T, followed by a transition section channel, where the field tapers down to 1.25 T. An iterative design process has been carried out which optimizes Monte Carlo code flux projections with realistic magnetic-field parameters. The severe radiation environment and component shielding requirements strongly influence design choices. The overall system design includes the capture and decay channel solenoids, the design parameters of which were provided by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. This design balances resistive and superconducting magnet contributions. Facility requirements, including shielding, remote handling, radioactive water system, etc. are based on the final design goal of 4 MW. The extent of the Target Support Facility and radiation-handling equipment includes the 50-m decay channel, where remote-handling operations are also required.

Book excerpt: The concept of a muon storage ring based Neutrino Source (Neutrino Factory) has sparked considerable interest in the High Energy Physics community. Besides providing a first phase of a muon collider facility, it would generate more intense and well collimated neutrino beams than currently available. The BNL-AGS or some other proton driver would provide an intense proton beam that hits a target, produces pions that decay into muons. The muons must be cooled, accelerated and injected into a storage ring with a long straight section where they decay. The decays occurring in the straight sections of the ring would generate neutrino beams that could be directed to detectors located thousands of kilometers away, allowing studies of neutrino oscillations with precisions not currently accessible. For example, with the neutrino source at BNL, detectors at Soudan, Minnesota (1,715 km), and Gran Sasso, Italy (6,527 km) become very interesting possibilities. The feasibility of constructing and operating such a muon-storage-ring based Neutrino-Factory, including geotechnical questions related to building non-planar storage rings (e.g. at 8° angle for BNL-Soudan, and 3° angle for BNL-Gran Sasso) along with the design of the muon capture, cooling, acceleration, and storage ring for such a facility is being explored by the growing Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration (NFMCC). The authors present overview of Neutrino Factory concept based on a muon storage ring, its components, physics opportunities, possible upgrade to a full muon collider, latest simulations of front-end, and a new bowtie-muon storage ring design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beta-beam concept for the generation of electron neutrino beams was first proposed by Piero Zucchelli in 2002. The idea created quite a stir, challenging the idea that intense neutrino beams only could be produced from the decay of pions or muons in classical neutrino beams facilities or in future neutrino factories. The concept initially struggled to make an impact but the hard work by many machine physicists, phenomenologists and theoreticians over the last five years has won the beta-beam a well-earned position as one of the frontrunners for a possible future world laboratory for high intensity neutrino oscillation physics. This is the first complete monograph on the beta-beam concept. The book describes both technical aspects and experimental aspects of the beta-beam, providing i) students and scientists with an insight into the possibilities offered by beta-beams; ii) facility designers with a starting point for future studies; and iii) policy makers with a comprehensive picture of the limits and possibilities offered by a beta-beam./a

Book excerpt: A conceptual design for a neutrino-producing facility is presented, including the mercury-jet target system, beam absorber, and facility for the target/capture region. The mercury system is a closed loop that includes a containment structure in the high-magnetic field region, a mercury pool beam absorber, conventional equipment such as magnetic-coupled pumps, valves, a heat exchanger, and a special nozzle insert. The superconducting solenoids in the target region are protected from nuclear heating and radiation damage with water-cooled tungsten-carbide shielding; the decay channel solenoids are protected with water-cooled steel shielding. The target region and decay channel have high-neutron fluxes resulting in components that are highly activated. Therefore, the facility configuration is based on remotely maintaining the target system and the magnets, as well as providing sufficient shielding for personnel. Summaries of cost estimates for the target system, magnet shielding, maintenance equipment, and the facility are also presented.

Book excerpt: At[nu]Fact'02, the muon-based neutrino factory was confronted with existing and planned neutrino facilities. When it was first discussed in 1999 in Lyon[1], it raised great enthusiasm, especially because it was thought to be the only machine capable of measuring CP violation in the leptonic sector. Since that time the pendulum has partially swung back. Two successive detailed studies[2, 3] have shown that a neutrino Factory and the needed R & D were both expensive. In terms of present experiments, neutrino oscillations have been confirmed at SuperK and SNO and results are soon expected from KamLAND. K2K, MniBOONE, MINOS and CNGS are going ahead and new perspectives have been opened by off-axis pion-based neutrino beams and the approval of the high intensity Japanese Hadron Facility. Crests and troughs of a wave are common in long term projects. They are even healthy because they force us to scrutinize the first ideas and sometimes to invent new ones to reach a realistic and affordable design. This analysis has been applied to target systems (section 2), RF capture and cooling of the muons (section 4) and accelerators (section 5). The new concept of pure electron neutrino or anti-neutrino beams produced by, [beta]-decay is discussed in section 3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A staged approach towards muon based facilities for Intensity and Energy Frontier science, building upon existing and proposed facilities at Fermilab, is presented. At each stage, a facility exploring new physics also provides an R & D platform to validate the technology needed for subsequent stages. The envisioned program begins with nuSTORM, a sensitive sterile neutrino search which also provides precision neutrino cross-section measurements while developing the technology of using and cooling muons. A staged Neutrino Factory based upon Project X, sending beams towards the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), which will house the LBNE detector, could follow for detailed exploration of neutrino properties at the Intensity Frontier, while also establishing the technology of using intense bunched muon beams. The complex could then evolve towards Muon Colliders, starting at 126 GeV with measurements of the Higgs resonance to sub-MeV precision, and continuing to multi-TeV colliders for the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model at the Energy Frontier. An Appendix addresses specific questions raised by the Lepton Colliders subgroup of the CSS2013 Frontier Capabilities Study Group.
