Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the Open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, per cent Of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School From Within Before entering upon the construction of a policy for the rural school, the writer gives as faithfully as possible his experiences as a teacher of a Kansas rural school. These experiences were interesting, and dealt with live problems, and throughout their dis cussion it is hoped that the student of pedagogy will recognize the employment of sound and progressive educative principles and the revealing and elucidating of deep-lying fundamentals of discipline and manage ment, which are knotty problems for thinkers and experts in education, by such concrete illustrations as to be of vital worth to the teacher just entering the profession, and helpful to those who have been long in the work. This book is a story - a story that repeats the experiences of thousands of teachers, tens of thou sands of American parents, and of innumerable children. It is a story plainly but not bluntly told it is uncolored by things that might have happened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching the Common Branches: A Textbook for Teachers of Rural and Graded Schools This book represents an attempt to Write a simple text on the theory of teaching for students Of teaching and for inexperienced teachers, particularly in the rural schools. Most Of the Would-be teachers who take an elementary course in methods of teaching are destined to begin in country schools. But most of the methods found in books on teaching have been Worked out for graded schools, Where there is more time, and Where there are, on the whole, better teachers. The author has faced this problem by Writing the present text primarily for rural teachers. The most practical assistance to him in the task has been several years' experience of his own as a country school teacher, several years more spent in training country teachers in a County Model School, and, very recently, some experience in teaching peda gogy to a group Of young students in the University_ High School. This equipment has been supplemented by an examination of all the books used in the high school normal training classes Of those states that have them, and by submitting the manuscript to certain experts Who know country schools and the capacities of their teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Life and the Rural School This volume is addressed to the men and women who have at heart the interests of rural life and the rural school. I have tried to avoid deeply speculative theories on the one hand, and distressingly practical details on the other; and have addressed myself chiefly to the intelligent individual everywhere - to the farmer and his wife, to the teachers of rural schools, to the public spirited school boards, individually and collectively, and to the leaders of rural communities and of social centers generally. I have tried to avoid the two extremes which Guizot says are always to be shunned, viz.: that of the visionary theorist and that of the libertine practician. The former is analogous to a blank cartridge, and the latter to the mire of a swamp or the entangled underbrush of a thicket. The legs of one's theories (as Lincoln said of those of a man) should be long enough to reach the earth; and yet they must be free to move upon the solid ground of fact and experience. Details must always be left to the person who is to do the work, whether it be that of the teacher, of the farmer, or of the school officer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management The present treatise on school methods and management is intended for teachers in the elementary country schools and for those in normal and high schools who expect to go into the rural schools to teach. The writer has studiously avoided all suggestions especially applicable to the management of city schools, and has purposely confined himself to such plans and methods as will be suited to the country school. While consolidation is an important movement, and many more weak districts should be united, yet in many parts of the United States the time is far distant when the one-room country school will, or should, be discontinued. A one-room school in the rural districts, taught by a competent teacher, is still a good place for a boy or girl to get the elements of an education. The United States Commissioner of Education reports that in the school year 1907-1908 there were five and one half million school children and one hundred thirty-four thousand teachers in cities of four thousand or more population; in the outside districts, there were eleven million children and three hundred sixty-one thousand teachers. In the state of Kansas there are two and one third times as many children in the one- and two-room schools and nearly five times as many teachers, as there are in the cities and towns maintaining graded systems of schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses Before the Rural Education Section of the New York State Teachers Association You have been appointed.superintendents of the rural schools. There are two hundred and seven of you, almost twice as many superintendents as there were school commissioners. The old districts were generally so large that real supervision was impossible, even if the old law had contemplated it, which it did not. Putting two districts where there was one before is an important factor in increasing the efficiency of supervision. That gives the superintendent a much better chance to do some thing worth while, but whether he does it or not depends upon himself. The Education Department expects much of each, and will do all it can to help each to do conspicuously good work; it will censure a superintendent for indifference and will remove him for wilfully or ignorantly violating either the letter or the spirit of the new law. This is plain language, but plain language is best. It would be absurd to characterize it as a menace or a threat. It is in the interest of two hundred and seven ofiicials whom the law places under my supervision, every one of whom starts out with my confidence and carries with him my good wishes. It is for the sake of a perfect under standing. I have my responsibility as well as you yours. What I say is in the discharge of that responsibility. It is well to be much more explicit and to tell you in detail what the Education Department expects of you. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement of Rural Schools The rural schools are about to receive from educators the attention that they deserve. The modern industrial city, with its peculiar patho logical conditions, has commanded both public and professional interest, but the rural com munity and the rural school have been neglected. Indeed, in many respects, rural life and rural institutions have lost ground. Relatively speak ing, they are not so efficient as they once were.
