This book was released on 1988 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This course of 12 lectures presents the current state of the art in fundamental knowledge and in practical predictive methods in tactical missile aerodynamics. The first lecture surveys aerodynamic problems encountered on existing and future missiles and the most important predictive methods. A lecture follows on the criteria that define the required prediction accuracy in terms of allowable errors in missile performance and design parameters. The 3rd lecture covers nonlinear aerodynamic effects including formation of flow separation vortices, vortex wakes and vortical interference, and nonlinear compressibility due to presence of shocks. Several lectures present engineering computation methods used for calculating stability and control for conventional and unconventional missiles, illustrated by numerous practical examples. They fall into two categories: semi-empirical methods based on the equivalent angle-of-attack concept and numerical methods, much more recent, based on the resolution of the steady and the unsteady Euler equations with flow separation vortices. Prediction of dynamic derivatives is also presented with a description of the experimental methods. An extensive lecture describes the role of the intake in the propulsion system of turbojet and ramjet powered missiles and addresses both the internal and external aerodynamic aspects of the induction system. A computer aided design procedure for use in conceptual design for sizing and shaping supersonic airbreathing missiles is presented. The prediction of aerodynamic heating and base flows with and without propulsion, and the design of the next generation supersonic and hypersonic missiles are discussed. (edc).

Book excerpt: The similarities between the airplane and the missile extend beyond their flying capabilities, and at higher operational speeds, the configuration distinctions become even less apparent. " Missile Aerodynamics," a classic now available from AIAA and Nielsen Engineering and Research, Inc., combines the best of missile and airplane aerodynamics, drawing extensively from numerous technical papers to present a rational and unified account of the principles behind missile projection. Evaluate the missile versus the airplane in a multitude of areas, from longitudinal acceleration, wing loading, roll and dynamic stability, guidance and navigation, and more. J.N. Nielsen covers every aspect of missile aerodynamics, from the classification of missiles and basic formulas to innovative aerodynamic controls. In one reliable reference, readers will find hundreds of schematics, equations, and tables with practical applications in missile design and engineering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present paper covers two distinctly different subjects. The first subject is the efforts of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army to develop aerial torpedos during World War I. The Navy team had such prominent engineers as Elmer and Lawrence Sperry and Glenn Curtis. The Army team included Charles F. Kettering and Orville Wright. Despite these eminent personalities, a successful aerial torpedo was not developed for use in World War I. The second subject area covered in the paper is suggestions for future work in missile aerodynamics. High angle of attack aerodynamics, engine-airframe integration and autopilot-airframe integration are covered. In addition, the future of asymmetric vortices, external stores, and computational fluid dynamics are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Proven techniques for deriving the basic aerodynamic properties of axisymmetric-shaped bodies with the minimum amount of time and effort Aerodynamics of Missiles and Rockets describes the basic aerodynamics model used in the widespread Analytical Initial Missile Synthesis (AIMS) computer code for symmetric missile and rocket sizing and design. It is a collection of empirical, semi-empirical and theoretical aerodynamics engineering methods for a component build-up approach to aerodynamics prediction. This book serves as an on-the-job application manual and desk reference for the prediction of basic aerodynamics. It can also be used for courses in applied aerodynamics in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering programs and for short courses in industry and government. This practical guide provides an alternative approach to utilizing numerous, complex, stand-alone computer codes, but is also a good complement to these codes. The book offers insight into the methods and techniques used to derive answers and correct magnitudes generated by code, giving confidence in final results. Features a Microsoft Excel file that automates calculations and provides complete tabulated output for missile and rocket geometry and design, and design and for rapid assessments of aerodynamic properties based on changes in geometry or flight conditions On-the-job application manual and desk reference for the prediction of basic aerodynamics Combination of long-standing, empirical and semi-empirical techniques with classical aerodynamic theory A component build-up approach utilized, with body and wing/tail surface aerodynamics determined separately and then combined for total configuration zero-lift drag, lift, center of pressure location, and pitching moment

Book excerpt: This book provides multifaceted components and full practical perspectives of systems engineering and risk management in security and defense operations with a focus on infrastructure and manpower control systems, missile design, space technology, satellites, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and space security. While there are many existing selections of systems engineering and risk management textbooks, there is no existing work that connects systems engineering and risk management concepts to solidify its usability in the entire security and defense actions. With this book Dr. Anna M. Doro-on rectifies the current imbalance. She provides a comprehensive overview of systems engineering and risk management before moving to deeper practical engineering principles integrated with newly developed concepts and examples based on industry and government methodologies. The chapters also cover related points including design principles for defeating and deactivating improvised explosive devices and land mines and security measures against kinds of threats. The book is designed for systems engineers in practice, political risk professionals, managers, policy makers, engineers in other engineering fields, scientists, decision makers in industry and government and to serve as a reference work in systems engineering and risk management courses with focus on security and defense operations.
