Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the seminal work of Robert K. Greenleaf, a former AT&T executive who coined the term almost thirty years ago, servant-leadership emphasizes an emerging approach to leadership—one which puts serving others, including employees, customers, and community, first. The Power of Servant Leadership is a collection of eight of Greenleaf's most compelling essays on servant-leadership. These essays, published together in one volume for the first time, contain many of Greenleaf's best insights into the nature and practice of servant-leadership and show his continual refinement of the servant-as-leader concept. In addition, several of the essays focus on the related issues of spirit, commitment to vision, and wholeness.

Book excerpt: How You Can Achieve Great Relationships and Results We've seen the negative impact of self-serving leaders in every sector of our society. Not infrequently, they end up bringing down their entire organization. But there is another way. Servant leaders lead by serving their people, not by exalting themselves. In this collection, edited by legendary business author and lifelong servant leader Ken Blanchard and his longtime editor Renee Broadwell, leading businesspeople, bestselling authors, and spiritual leaders offer tools for implementing this proven - but for some, still radical - leadership model. The book is organized into six parts. Part One, Fundamentals of Servant Leadership, describes basic aspects of servant leadership. Part Two, Elements of Servant Leadership, highlights some of the different points of view of servant leaders. Part Three, Lessons in Servant Leadership, focuses on what people have learned on a personal level from observing servant leadership in action. Part Four, Exemplars of Servant Leadership, features people who have been identified as classic servant leaders. Part Five, Putting Servant Leadership to Work, offers firsthand accounts of people who have made servant leadership come alive in their organizations. Part Six, Servant Leadership Turnarounds, illustrates how servant leadership can dramatically impact both results and human satisfaction in organizations. This is the most comprehensive and wide-ranging guide ever published for what is, in every sense, a better way to lead.

Book excerpt: Mike Wilson is a respected consultant charged with the task of building a new practice area in leadership development. During the new project, he learns that his father is very ill and wants his only child to come home and help him with ''''a few projects.'''' Mike's father is a well - known, retired CEO, and Mike gets his boss's blessing to take as much time as he needs. Unbeknownst to him, Mike's father and boss, longtime friends, have plotted this visit to help Mike learn some needed leadership and life lessons. So begins this compelling narrative that combines a very human story with the classical Greenleaf theory of servant leadership. The second book in the acclaimed Ken Blanchard series (called ''''powerful testimony'''' by Brad Orr, CEO of John Burnham Co) is both a practical guide for effective leadership and a book about the personal journey of growth that real leadership requires.

With eye-opening case studies and recommended behaviors in every chapter, it's an indispensable user guide for servant leaders.Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The New One Minute Manager and coeditor of Servant Leadership in Action On the most fundamental level, leaders must bring divergent groups together and forge a consensus on a path forward. But what makes that possible? Humility-a deep regard for the dignity of others-is the key, says distinguished leadership educator Marilyn Gist.Leadership is a relationship, and humility is the foundation for all healthy relationships. Leader humility can increase engagement and retention. It inspires and motivates. Gist offers a model of leader humility derived from three questions people ask of their leaders: Who are you? Where are we going? Do you see me? She explores each of these questions in depth, as well as the six key qualities of leader humility: a balanced ego, integrity, a compelling vision, ethical strategies, generous inclusion, and a developmental focus.Much of this book is based on Gist's interviews with a dozen distinguished leaders of organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, Costco, REI, Alaska Airlines, Starbucks, and others. And the foreword and a guest chapter are written by Alan Mulally, the legendary leader who brought Ford back from the brink of bankruptcy after the 2008 financial collapse and whose work is an exemplar of leader humility.

Book excerpt: In The Spirit of Servant-Leadership editors Shann Ferch and Larry Spears present an elegant and powerful approach to the nature of the leader-follower dynamic, with a specific focus on many of the most radical, life-affirming, and transformative facets of the servant-leader. In essence, The Spirit of Servant-Leadership speaks to the soul of humanity by gathering a bright symphony of voices, including some of the current thought-leaders of contemporary leadership. Among the many voices in this volume, Peter Block questions the very nature of leadership and draws people to more deeply understand the subtlety, humility, and self-transcendence required to develop one another, individually and collectively. Larry C. Spears delves into the rich earth of holistic servant-leadership, and creates multidimensional growth and healing for the heart, mind, and spirit. Margaret Wheatley calls people to deeply consider the interior formation of leaders that create greater transparency, less command and control, and more willingness to be sincerely changed by others. James Autry unveils important truths about the process of insight involved in true servant-leadership, and Shann Ferch speaks to the nature of intimacy and the profound questions of forgiveness between people, cultures, and nations. Robert Greenleaf, former AT & T executive and the contemporary founder of servant-leadership said, "Behind every great achievement is a dreamer of great dreams." The Spirit of Servant-Leadership affirms people in all the complexity and nuance of the human endeavor, and helps renew in readers the ability to dream great dreams. +

Book excerpt: How do we develop leaders that others will want to follow? Neuschel firmly believed in the principle of servant leadership, which he first learnt early in his military career in World War ll. There he learnt to "always serve your troops first that you may command better" and to "grow the total soldier". By that he meant to feed the mind, the heart, and the spirit. He adopted and tailored this philosophy throughout his subsequent long and successful corporate and academic career. He proved that enabling people to grow and make a greater contribution can only benefit them and the organization. More recently, Neuschel's concern was with today's corporate leaders' preoccupation with quick shareholder value at the expense of building enduring organizations based on ethical values. In his book he forcefully outlines what leaders have to do to bring this about. The Servant Leader is an eloquent and thoughtful insight from somebody who truly understood the importance of humility and humanity on the part of all those who take on the role of the leader: "they must first serve so that they may lead better".

It puts servant leadership into a historical and theoretical context while providing a research-based approach and conceptual model that deepens our understanding of the topic. Further, it provides ways to implement this approach to leadership in real organizational settings. The goal is to bridge the gap between scholarly research and the practical realities of leadership within organizations, communities, and society at large. The author presents the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) and model with research support which will guide students and leaders in evaluating organizational health and effectiveness.

Book excerpt: In this book "Born to Serve: A Call to Servant Leadership" I have noted that each one of us is born to fulfil a special and unique purpose in life. Each person must find what that God's plan about one's life is. We will live in a much better world and lead a better life when we are prepared to serve one another. We are born to be leaders in our own homes, extended families, neighbourhood, communities and nation. Servant leadership does not abuse power, does not take advantage of the higher office and thus look down upon those who are being served, those who are followers or dependants. Humility is the prescribed manner of providing a service. A servant leader must be humble and be committed to serve his/ her followers. Some followers, like Peter, will not understand, and perhaps even refuse that their feet be washed by "such big people". Instead they will insist on washing you, or doing things for you. A true servant leader will reject that and insist that "I am here to serve you and not the other way round". When Peter rejected the offer of Jesus to wash his feet, then Jesus nicely explained to him; "If I do not wash you, you will not have part with me". In other words my mandate from the Father who sent me is that I must serve you. Jesus had explained to His disciples that, the manner in which my Father sent me, so do I send you. The manner of rendering the service, the manner of spreading the gospel of Christ shall not deviate from how Jesus did it himself. The one who is a servant is not greater than the one who is being served. The learner is not greater than the teacher. The one who is a servant leader must always take to heart the interests of the one who is being served. The true qualities of a servant leader show up in the manner that the servant leader carries him/ herself; the manner he/ she provides the service, the manner he/ she interacts with the ones served, the manner he/ she follows up to ensure the effectiveness of the service. There is an urgent need for a paradigm shift that those who are providing a service change from being treated or seeing themselves as "masters who must be feared, respected and honoured". The radical change must happen on both sides, the servant's attitude and expectations must change; those who are being served must accept being served by people with authority/ power. As it were they must demand and expect servant leadership. Most public representatives, officials, religious leaders or community workers often treat the recipients of their services with a condescending attitude. It is as though those who are being served must worship those who are servants. Employers themselves must lead by example and demonstrate to their employees how to be a servant leader. It is crucial that we all know what our individual mandate is, and how we are going to fulfil it. Those who are the sent ones must live up to their calling as ambassadors, and thus efficiently and effectively represent the high authority that sent them.
