Book excerpt: When her future is cruelly snatched away, can she ever hope for happiness again? Josephine Cox writes a heart-stopping saga in Born to Serve, a tale of courage, fortitude and devastating jealousy. Perfect for fans of Rosie Goodwin and Kitty Neale. 'I can take him away from you any time I want.' Her mistress's cruel taunt is deeply disturbing to Jenny. But why should Claudia be interested in a servant's sweetheart? Jenny reckons without Claudia's vicious nature; using a wily trick she seduces Frank, who, overcome with shame, departs for a new life in Blackburn. Losing her sweetheart is just the first of many disasters that leave Jenny struggling to cope alone. When Claudia gives birth to Frank's baby girl, she cruelly disowns the helpless infant and relies on Jenny to care for little Katie and love her as her own. Always afraid for the beloved child who has come to depend on her, Jenny is constantly called upon to show courage and fortitude to fight for all she holds dear. In her heart she yearns for Frank, believing that one day they must be reunited. When Fate takes a hand, it seems as though Jenny may see her dreams come true... What Amazon readers are saying about Born to Serve: 'It is a heartrending story and is so well written that you feel so much for Jenny, Katie and Frank. It has many interesting twists and turns but remains a brilliant story throughout. A definite good read for a long afternoon!' 'I loved this book and it's definitely one of my favourites, I did not want it to end. The story grips you as soon as you start reading and I did not want to put it down to do anything else' 'Another spell-binding, unputdownable story from Josephine Cox'

Book excerpt: Texas Southern University is often said to have been “conceived in sin.” Located in Houston, the school was established in 1947 as an “emergency” state-supported university for African Americans, to prevent the integration of the University of Texas. Born to Serve is the first book to tell the full history of TSU, from its founding, through the many varied and defining challenges it faced, to its emergence as a first-rate university that counts Barbara Jordon, Mickey Leland, and Michael Strahan among its graduates. Merline Pitre frames TSU’s history within that of higher education for African Americans in Texas, from Reconstruction to the lawsuit that gave the school its start. The case, Sweatt v. Painter, involved student Heman Marion Sweatt, who was denied entry to the University of Texas Law School because he was black. Pitre traces the tortuous measures by which Texas legislators tried to meet a provision of the state’s constitution that called for the establishment and maintenance of a “branch university for the instruction of colored youths of the State.” When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1950 that the UT Law School’s efforts to remain segregated violated the U.S. Constitution, the future of the institution that would become Texas Southern University in 1951 looked doubtful. In its early years the university persevered in the face of state neglect and underfunding and the threat of merger. Born to Serve describes the efforts, both humble and heroic, that faculty and staff undertook to educate students and turn TSU into the thriving institution it is today: a major metropolitan university serving students of all races and ethnicities from across the country and throughout the world. Launched during the early civil rights movement, TSU has a history unique among historically black colleges and universities, most of which were established immediately after the Civil War. Born to Serve adds a critical chapter to the history of education and integration in the United States.

Book excerpt: Most people wake up and drive to a job that they hate. Think about your five closest friends. Are they happy? Do they live their lives with purpose? Do you? We put on a fake front for what we want people to see and think about us, but the reality is most people aren’t happy. We’re lost. We settle. We aren’t happy with where we are. You can’t be happy if you don’t know your purpose. It’s not possible. You want more but you don’t even know where to start. You know there is more out there. You see others having success and you want it, too; there is nothing wrong with that. You just need help finding your purpose so you can find the success you see all around you. You can be productive, crush your goals, pretend that all the things that you’ve acquired actually mean something…but at the end of the day, if you don’t know your purpose, you’ll always feel like there’s something missing. You’ll know that you’re capable of more and that you’re not living the life you should be. You might be fooling the world, but you’re not fooling the person looking back at you in the mirror. You need to find your actual power source. Your purpose is your source of power. Once you find your purpose it’ll fuel you for life. You’ll do things that you never thought you were capable of. Achieving your purpose will force you to morph into a stronger version of yourself. You’ll have to push through fears, insecurities, and doubts that held you back. But somehow it’ll all feel possible and necessary because you’re purpose-driven now…and that’s the only thing you’ll ever need.

Book excerpt: As life unfolded it was clear to me, /I was BORN TO SERVE God, Family, Country, and Community. So writes Charles R. Gay in this moving recollection of the life of a man, born to sharecroppers in southern Georgia, whose upbringing and rock-solid faith in God and Jesus Christ led him to a life dedicated to helping others. At the age of 14, Charles R. Gay left school to care for his family and their farm when illness left both of his parents bed-ridden. A few years later, despite being excused from the military draft, he answered the call of duty by serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After twenty years of service in the Navy, Gay returned to his home town to work as a police officer and deputy sheriff. As readers will witness, during each phase of his remarkable life it was his sincere faith in the Lord that kept Charles R. Gay on his true path and showed him that he was born to serve.

Book excerpt: Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge is an erudite Professor of Constitutional Law with admirable scholarly attributes: 42 years at the bar; 42 years in crowded lecture halls, impacting knowledge and building prodigies at the Bar and Bench. “Born To Serve” chronicles the “Aba Boy” at 66, and his services from formative years to retirement as Director General, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, - “Nigerian Law Abode,” – the apex of legal education in Nigeria. He is currently among the jurists of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal in London, representing Nigeria. Every stage of his life is eventful. At St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, he once declared a “state of emergency” as a school prefect, and graduated tops. At the London School of Economics where he acquired his doctorate, he became popular as “Zinge,” due to his intellect, and earned a distinction. He has grown unimaginably in status to become a man of exemplary character and great achievements in public administration, philanthropy and service to God and humanity. Azinge served three attorneys general, and ministers of justice as special assistant and legal adviser at Nigeria’s most challenging period in history, covering draconian military regimes of Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha. He recalls sadly, June 12 1993, the execution of the “Ogoni Nine,” and the Bakassi border dispute that Nigeria lost to Cameroun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Sutton Jr. grew up poor in Kinston, North Carolina. His childhood home had no central heat or hot water. He and his family walked seven miles roundtrip to church every Sunday because they didn't have a car. To help out, Sam picked tobacco during his summer vacations, starting at age ten. But Sam was to rise far in life from these humble beginnings. Joining the Navy in 1979, he embarked on a thirty-year military career, serving first as a sailor, then as an enlisted aide to the nation's top admirals and generals, and finally as a personal valet to presidents Bill Clinton, G. W. Bush, and Barack Obama. He worked a backbreaking schedule, juggling multiple tasks in a position that made him a virtual member of the First Family, an eyewitness to their public and private lives. Born to Serve is also a cautionary tale about the complex dynamics of race and politics at the highest levels of the military and government. From his first day as valet, Sam's close proximity to the president made him a target for those who craved access to the most powerful man in the world. That competitive pressure would prematurely end Sam's career as valet, but he went on to write a new chapter in his life by adopting a child out of the foster care system, guiding him in overcoming a difficult past, and raising him into a fine young man. Told with candor and warmth, this is the story of a man who overcame significant adversity to serve his country with tireless faith and dedication. "Who knew that a native son of Kinston, North Carolina would come to know kings, queens and presidents? Who knew that service in the Navy would become high-level service to the Nation? We knew, because in Samuel Sutton Jr. we saw the unmistakable mark of a Man of Principle." - Admiral & Mrs. J. Paul Reason, Washington, DC

Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to escape from what seemed like a hopeless accomplishment? Instances in my life added fuel to that kind of thinking and could have devastated me—poor grade-school results, four years of failure in piano lessons, difficulty in memorization, fear of public speaking, and failure to be accepted into a college due to an entrance exam debacle. Consequently, I developed low self-esteem and believed I was worthless and even ugly. Also I wondered what happens after death or if death is the end. If there is life after death, is there a definitive answer? In my youth I became burdened with the horrible thought, I do not want to die! If burdensome thoughts have entered your mind, and you need a positive outlook, read Born to Serve. You might be amazed at the outcome in my life. For anyone searching for the meaning of life, you must read Dennis Fox’s book. He found the secret to happiness by finding a life filled with service to Jesus Christ and exemplified life with a commitment to faith. I am far from a born-again Christian, in fact, I am a conservative Roman Catholic, yet I found joy and purpose in his writing. The only other thing, which is important, he did not convey the completeness with which his late wife gave hugs. When Joy hugged you, you knew you were loved with every cell of your body. A. Mary Walborn, MD with the Cleveland Clinic

Book excerpt: This book is about being blessed, abundantly blessed. It is about being obedient to God and allowing Him to lead and direct me. It’s about Proverbs 3:5 which states “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight”. It is about my experiences, natural and super natural, that resulted in life changing consequences. Time and time again, many of us have heard that “Faith” is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Throughout this book, I will share what my faith and works has done for God’s glory. We must believe by faith, to trust God to be our Leader, Provider, Counselor and that He is limitless and All things are possible.

Creativity is tied to all believers’ identity, all who are made in the image of the Creator, all who are born to create! Overflowing with many thrilling, modern-day testimonies, Born to Create emphasizes the magnitude of both craft—practice and excellence—as well as anointing. Many who have been freed to embrace their creative ideas and passions, whether in the art fields, business, or education, share their amazing stories with you. Their freedom allowed them to powerfully release healing, the prophetic, and the knowledge of God’s love into the marketplace. Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law… (Galatians 6:1 The Message). You will learn how the supernatural can be activated through what you create, and you will explore hindrances from understanding your creative destiny—your true identity.

Book excerpt: As the main spoken language of the Jews for more than a thousand years, Yiddish has had plenty to lament, plenty to conceal. Its phrases, idioms, and expressions paint a comprehensive picture of the mind-set that enabled the Jews of Europe to survive a millennium of unrelenting persecution: they never stopped kvetching---about God, gentiles, children, food, and everything (and anything) else. They even learned how to smile through their kvetching and express satisfaction in the form of complaint. In Born to Kvetch, Michael Wex looks at the ingredients that went into this buffet of disenchantment and examines how they were mixed together to produce an almost limitless supply of striking idioms and withering curses (which get a chapter all to themselves). Born to Kvetch includes a wealth of material that's never appeared in English before. You'll find information on the Yiddish relationship to food, nature, divinity, and humanity. There's even a chapter about sex. This is no bobe mayse (cock-and-bull story) from a khokhem be-layle (idiot, literally a "sage at night" when no one's looking), but a serious yet fun and funny look at a language that both shaped and was shaped by those who spoke it. From tukhes to goy, meshugener to kvetch, Yiddish words have permeated and transformed English as well. Through the idioms, phrases, metaphors, and fascinating history of this kvetch-full tongue, Michael Wex gives us a moving and inspiring portrait of a people, and a language, in exile.
