I have always remembered what they said out loud in front of me. The one with the hat said, "Judge, go up there and find out who's muddying up the water," and the tall slender man said, "You're the Lawman-you go up there and find out who’s muddying up the water." I’ve always wondered why I met two men that were a judge and a lawman. Meanwhile, 50 years later while doing research on the Internet, I discovered information pertaining to the identity of the middle man between the FBI and the person who helped solve the mystery of the whereabouts of the three civil rights workers that went missing on June 21, 1964. He was Commander of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol in Meridian, Mississippi. But the identity of the local Neshoba County Citizen that helped the FBI is still unknown. I know who is America’s unsung hero!

The familys life is endangered when the dogs corner the panther under the kitchen but Annies quick thinking and action saves her family. Matties love for her horse, Prince and her confidence in his speed entice her to enter the horse race at the Neshoba County Fair. Her determination to prove Prince as the fastest horse in the community causes her to break rules in order to win the race. The Posey family and the black family, who shares their surname, have been bound in a close relationship since Wade and Joshua were small children. The trials of rugged farm life and the illnesses and deaths due to a lack of medical care bind them even closer. When Mattie falls in love with Frank Haney, a boy of the Catholic faith, her prejudiced parents take drastic measures to prevent their marriage, so they decide to elope. The Ku Klux Klan interferes with Wades efforts to reward his faithful, black friend with a deed to part of his farm. When a cross is burned in his front yard he visits each of the Klan members and gives them a piece of the charred cross. Years later, Mattie meets John Mayo, who is twenty years her senior and when he proposes marriage to her she has difficulty accepting because of her love for Frank.

Book excerpt: Historians of the American South have come to consider the mechanization and consolidation of cotton farming—the “Southern enclosure movement”—to be a watershed event in the region’s history. In the decades after World War II, this transition pushed innumerable sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and smallholders off the land, redistributing territory and resources upward to a handful of large, mainly white operators. By disproportionately displacing Black farmers, enclosure also slowed the progress of the civil rights movement and limited its impact. John Cable’s Southern Enclosure is among the first studies to explore that process through the interpretive lens of settler colonialism. Focusing on east-central Mississippi, home of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, Cable situates enclosure in the long history of dispossession that began with Indian Removal. The book follows elite white landowners and Black and Choctaw farmers from World War II to 1960—the period when the old, labor-intensive farm structure collapsed. By acknowledging that this process occurred on taken land, Cable demonstrates that the records of agricultural agents, segregationist politicians, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) are traces of ongoing colonization. The settler colonial framework, rarely associated with the postwar South, sheds important light on the shifting categories of race and class. It also prompts comparisons with other settler societies (states in southern and eastern Africa, for instance) whose timelines, racial regimes, and agrarian transitions were similar to those of the South. This postwar history of the South suggests ways in which the BIA’s termination policy dovetailed with Southern segregationism and, at the same time, points to some of the shortcomings of the burgeoning field of settler colonial studies.
