Book Synopsis Oman Reborn by : Linda Pappas Funsch
Download or read book Oman Reborn written by Linda Pappas Funsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sultanate of Oman is one of the few "good news" stories to have emerged from the Middle East in recent memory. This book traces the narrative of a little-known and relatively stable Arab country whose history of independence, legacy of interaction with diverse cultures, and enlightened modern leadership have transformed it in less than fifty years from an isolated medieval-style potentate to a stable, dynamic, and largely optimistic country. At the heart of this fascinating story is Oman’s sultan, Qaboos bin Sa’id, friend to both East and West, whose unique leadership style has resulted in both domestic and foreign policy achievements during more than four decades in office. Exploring Oman from a historical perspective, Funsch examines how the country’s unique blend of tradition and modernization has enabled it to succeed while others in the region have failed. Accounts of the author’s own experiences with Oman’s transformation add rich layers of depth, texture, and personality to the narrative.

Download or read book Towards a Better Port Industry written by Peter W. de Langen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards a Better Port Industry provides professionals in freight transport and maritime logistics, and specifically the port industry, as well as students in these fields, with a better conceptual understanding of the port industry. It includes key insights and best practices for port management and development, and an overview of new trends and developments relevant for developing winning strategies. After an introduction, Chapter 2 offers a new perspective on port governance, in which public interests, corporatization, state-ownership, and shareholder policies take a central role. Chapter 3 explains how new trends and developments affect port development and argues that assuming ‘business as usual’ often leads to major port development mistakes. Chapter 4 deals with port development and discusses all major port development challenges, including granting concessions, developing a port vision, crafting stakeholder support, choosing port performance indicators and creating a port innovation system. The final chapter deals with port development strategies and includes themes such as strategies of port development companies, pricing and business development. This book will broaden professionals’ conceptual understanding of the ports industry, and provide insights on the latest developments in this area. For students, this book provides an industry-focused and non-technical ‘essential reading’ for gaining a deep understanding of the ports industry.

Book Synopsis The Business Year: Oman 2020 by : Peter Howson
Download or read book The Business Year: Oman 2020 written by Peter Howson and published by The Business Year. This book was released on with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the experienced TBY team landed in Muscat in September 2019 to start its seventh annual research on the Sultanate's economy, it could have never imagined the uniqueness of the times ahead. Early 2020 saw the passing away of the Father of the Nation, His Majesty Late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and the appointment of the new leader, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. This was thought to be Oman's defining event in 2020, but shortly after, the COVID-19 outbreak touched every corner of the world, and oil prices continuously sunk to record lows. No doubt it is a trying time, but we see this 2020 edition of The Business Year: Oman as ushering a new era for the Sultanate. With a refreshed, forward-looking perspective, this 260-page publication analyzes how the business community is embracing innovation and technology to create a competitive, diversified economy.

Download or read book The Report: Oman 2015 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with most of its neighbours in the GCC region, oil and gas remains a significant contributor to Oman’s economy, accounting for around 50% of GDP. While the recent slump in oil prices is a concern, increased investment in enhanced oil recovery techniques in recent times has attempted to make up for this decline, with supply increasing as a result. Meanwhile, Oman’s industrial sector, particularly the petrochemicals segment, is poised for large expansion with ongoing investment in downstream infrastructure and new facilities in the pipeline for the Sohar and Salalah industrial regions expected to contribute significantly to output before 2020. Added to this is the rapid development of Oman’s ports, rail and airports, which is expected to drive its reputation as a regional logistics hub while developing the tourism sector, which is considered as key moving forward.
Download or read book The Report: Oman 2017 written by and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oman’s economy contracted by 13.8% in nominal terms in 2015 as the ongoing low oil price environment squeezed growth and led to the largest budget deficit in over a decade. In a bid to tackle the shortfall the government is taking a number of revenue-raising measures such as cutting subsidies and increasing corporation tax, while remaining focused on its long-term diversification goals. Though hydrocarbons still account for 33.9% of GDP and 78.7% of state revenues, non-oil sectors are playing an increasingly prominent role in the country’s economic profile. Authorities are targeting heavy industries in particular with plans to boost their GDP contribution to from 19.8% today to 29% by 2020. Meanwhile annual growth of 6% is being targeted in the mining sector, with a host of regulatory initiatives being implemented as the government seeks to boost investor interest. Start reading

Download or read book The Report: Oman 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sultanate’s economy continues to enjoy the benefits of petroleum wealth, which has provided budget surpluses in most years and served as a backbone for growth. However, planning is well under way for an era in which oil will not be the main economic driver, with the twin goals of diversification and creating an increased number of private sector jobs at the top of the government’s current agenda. Indeed, in recent years, the non-OPEC oil exporter’s economy has been undergoing a steady transformation, reorienting from oil toward a more diverse set of service and industry-based economic activities. So far, progress has been promising. In 2011 oil and gas accounted for 38.8% of GDP. With the continuation of higher-than-expected energy prices in 2012, the government has increased economic investments accordingly. These investments, which include infrastructure, social programmes and small-business development, are aimed toward better preparing the country for its post-fossil fuel future.

Although the dip in oil prices has put pressure on government revenues, authorities are pressing ahead with spending plans for the sector, particularly in the downstream segment. The country’s infrastructure expansion plans are also moving forward, particularly at the country’s three ports as the country seeks to leverage its strategic position on the Strait of Hormuz and establish itself as a global transport and logistics hub. Feeding off this development drive are the sultanate’s banks, with project finance regarded as one of the most promising areas for lending growth. In the longer term, Oman Vision 2020 seeks to boost private sector participation in the economy and fuel SME growth in key sectors, including construction, retail, tourism and transport.

Book excerpt: Bradt's is the most up-to-date and informative guide to Oman, the Arabian peninsula's most welcoming destination, fully revised and updated by an author who has been living in Oman and Arabia since 1986. Oman is finally reaping the economic benefit of its location between Europe, Africa and Asia with substantial investment in major shipping ports and significant expansion of the national airline with new routes to Western Europe and East Asia. Despite being at the crossroads of great trade routes and empires, Oman has remained an independent country through much of its long history, and today tourism and travel are a major focus for Oman's government. This new edition covers the recent substantial investment in new airport facilities and upmarket accommodation and also features the historic UNESCO towns of Samharam and Al Balid. If you want to live like a local, the guide also tells you how to slow cook the traditional spiced meat shuwa and how to be a perfect guest if invited into an Omani home. Oman is not merely a desert. While it has the classic sand seas - Wihibah Sands - home to the nomadic Bedouin and their camels, this sultanate also boasts lush monsoon-soaked valleys near Salalah, mountain villages surrounded by green terraced fields of fruit trees and rose bushes, and the reef-fringed Ad Dimaniyyat Islands. With such a varied wilderness there is huge scope for adventure. Oman is increasingly perceived as a high-end cultural destination. The new Opera House has opened, directly supported by the Sultan, with top-notch international performers like Placido Domingo. The guide includes advice on property buying, since Omani law changed to allow expatriates to buy, explaining the rules and regulations. There is also a detailed overview of language schools teaching Arabic, not found in other guides. With advice on cultural etiquette, basic Arabic phrases and political history - as well as full practical information on where to stay and eat, and what to see and do - this fully updated edition remains the essential guide for travellers looking to discover the real Oman.
