This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which colonialism continues to define the political economy of Nigeria sixty years after gaining political independence from the British. It also establishes a link between colonialism and the continued agitation for restructuring the political arrangement of the country. The contributions offer various perspectives on how the forceful amalgamation of disparate units and diverse nationalities have undermined the realization of the development potential of Nigeria. The book is divided into two parts. The first part interrogates the political economy of colonialism and the implications of this on economic development in contemporary Nigeria. The second part examines nation-building, governance, and development in a postcolonial state. The failure of the postcolonial political elites to ensure inclusive governance has continued to foster centrifugal and centripetal forces that question the legitimacy of the state. The forces have deepened calls for secession, accentuated conflicts and predispose the country to possible disintegration. A new government approach is required that would ensure equal representation, access to power and equitable distribution of resources.

Download or read book Deadend to Nigerian Development written by Okwudiba Nnoli and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The balance of power between an individual and the state they live in is the key to any country's political process. Concepts of citizenship, reciprocity of rights and citizen's duties intertwine in the struggle for assertion. With its largely collective citizenship, the civil society in Africa is alive and vibrant. But in the face of continuing global recession, the present phase of the African crisis is expected to sharpen contradictions within the continent's states. New paradigms have to be sought to explain the formations and realities. The ten chapters in this book, all written by African scholars, question the western, ethnocentric model of development and look at the wide diversity of African experience. From the Ormo cosmic framework and street-begging in Nigeria, through the role of labour and the part played by wage demands in the African crisis, this volume is a major contribution to the debate on Africa's future.
Book Synopsis Historical Perspectives on Economy, Politics, and Health in Nigeria by : Chima J. Korieh

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on several aspects of Nigerian history has grown rapidly in recent years. Yet there is continued interest in the development of the Nigerian nation, evidenced by the contemporary challenges the nation continues to face in the areas of politics, economy, and social development. This volume surveys different aspects of Nigeria's struggle to achieve a level of growth and stability in the areas of politics, economy, and health. The contributors offer critical perspectives on the successes, failures, and opportunities in these sectors, spanning from the colonial to the post-colonial era. The chapters show that Nigeria's struggle for sustainable growth in these areas has been challenged by the structural weaknesses of the Nigerian state and the centripetal and centrifugal forces that have struggled for the soul of the Nigerian state.

Book Synopsis Nigeria and the Nation-State by : John Campbell
Download or read book Nigeria and the Nation-State written by John Campbell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria matters. It is Africa’s largest economy, and it is projected to become the third most populous country in the world by 2050, but its democratic aspirations are challenged by rising insecurity. John Campbell traces the fractured colonial history and contemporary ethnic conflicts and political corruption that define Nigeria today. It was not—and never had been—a nation-state like those of Europe. It is still not quite a nation because Nigerians are not yet united by language, religion, culture, or a common national story. It is not quite a state because the government is weak and getting weaker, beset by Islamist terrorism, insurrection, intercommunal violence, and a countrywide crime wave. This deeply knowledgeable book is an antidote to those who would make the mistakes of Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq—mistakes based on misunderstanding—in Nigeria. Up to now, such mistakes have largely been avoided, but Nigeria will soon—and Campbell argues already does—require much greater attention by the West.

Book Synopsis Challenges to the Nation-state in Africa by : Adebayo O. Olukoshi
Download or read book Challenges to the Nation-state in Africa written by Adebayo O. Olukoshi and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges facing the nation-state in contemporary Africa are increasingly attracting the attention of scholars interested to understand how the decomposition and recomposition of popular political identities on the continent are affecting the post-colonial unitary project. The studies presented in this volume show that the challenges to the post-colonial nation-state project in Africa have mainly taken ethno-regionalist, religious and separatist forms. These challenges have been shaped by the long drawn-out economic crisis, zero-sum, market-led structural adjustment, and the legacy of decades of political authoritarianism and exclusion that dates from the colonial period. The contributors to this book present different suggestions to promote national unity and a supporting civic identity in Africa.
