Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Evolution IN presenting the following pages to the public, the author wishes it to be understood that he does not expect to convert any to a belief in evolution. He addresses those who accept the doctrine in some form or other as established, although he has endeavoured, as concisely as possible, to present the reader with the reasons for accepting it. Those who remain un convinced by the elaborate works of Darwin, Spencer, and others will probably not accept the views enunci ated in these pages, which, however, it is hoped, will not be unacceptable to many who wish to reconcile the theory of evolution with the highest aims of human thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution Hypothesis: A Criticism of the New Cosmic Philosophy HE Evolution Hypothesis has stamped its impress on the thought of our time. It claims to dominate the whole field of experience, and to direct all inquiry. As a theory of universal truth, it lies open to the criticism of every student of philo sophy. How far in certain groups of physical phenomena it expresses justly the law of change, I do not discuss. Examination in detail, over the whole extent of the knowable, can be effectively conducted only by division of labour among many workers, each handling some part of the question, which he has made the subject of special study. In this way the measure of truth contained in the hypothesis must ultimately be defined. My purpose is to deal with the theory as it undertakes to. Formulate the entire cosmic movement within the knowable - as it aims at the unification of all knowledge. But before experience itself can be used with advantage, there is one preliminary step to make, which depends wholly on ourselves: it is the absolute dismissal and clearing of the mind of all prejudice from whatever source arising, and the determination to stand or fall by the result of a direct appeal to facts in the first instance, and of strict logical deduction from them afterwards." Sir John Herschel: Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy. "The fair question is, Does the newly proposed view remove more difficulties, require fewer assumptions, and present more consistency with observed facts than that which it seeks to supersede? if so the philosopher will adopt it, and the world will follow the philosopher - after many days." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Question: if we accept the Theory of Evolu tion as true in science, how should it modify the thought and action of a man who wishes to do his best in this world? The question is necessary because we find that different and inconsistent conclusions on the point have been reached by men speaking in the name of science and speaking with authority. These differences are due not to anything in science, but to certain extra-scientific assumptions. To test the worth Of such assumptions is the work of philosophy; and this volume is accordingly an essay in philosophy. Science is but organised common sense. Science and Religion both claim to deal with realities. The realism of common sense, therefore, the form of philosophy to which both seem to point, is that which is set forth here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwinian Fallacies May be regarded as a sequel to The Law of Evolution [is T we Philosophical Basis, issued through Mr. Grant Richards early in the present year. In the latter work a new theory of evolution was developed by the author, in which the facts adduced by Mr. Darwin in support of his theory find an adequate explanation, while at the same time the materialistic error which renders that theory obnoxious to the highest intuitions of our race is completely eliminated. The reception ao corded by the Press to the work in question was on the whole satisfactory, especially when the entire novelty of the views advanced therein is taken into consideration. For in several instances the vast importance and far reaching consequences of the principles laid down obtained full recognition, while the literary style and other characteristics of the work were freely commended in others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering proposal for a pluralistic extension of evolutionary theory, now updated to reflect the most recent research. This new edition of the widely read Evolution in Four Dimensions has been revised to reflect the spate of new discoveries in biology since the book was first published in 2005, offering corrections, an updated bibliography, and a substantial new chapter. Eva Jablonka and Marion Lamb's pioneering argument proposes that there is more to heredity than genes. They describe four “dimensions” in heredity—four inheritance systems that play a role in evolution: genetic, epigenetic (or non-DNA cellular transmission of traits), behavioral, and symbolic (transmission through language and other forms of symbolic communication). These systems, they argue, can all provide variations on which natural selection can act. Jablonka and Lamb present a richer, more complex view of evolution than that offered by the gene-based Modern Synthesis, arguing that induced and acquired changes also play a role. Their lucid and accessible text is accompanied by artist-physician Anna Zeligowski's lively drawings, which humorously and effectively illustrate the authors' points. Each chapter ends with a dialogue in which the authors refine their arguments against the vigorous skepticism of the fictional “I.M.” (for Ipcha Mistabra—Aramaic for “the opposite conjecture”). The extensive new chapter, presented engagingly as a dialogue with I.M., updates the information on each of the four dimensions—with special attention to the epigenetic, where there has been an explosion of new research. Praise for the first edition “With courage and verve, and in a style accessible to general readers, Jablonka and Lamb lay out some of the exciting new pathways of Darwinian evolution that have been uncovered by contemporary research.” —Evelyn Fox Keller, MIT, author of Making Sense of Life: Explaining Biological Development with Models, Metaphors, and Machines “In their beautifully written and impressively argued new book, Jablonka and Lamb show that the evidence from more than fifty years of molecular, behavioral and linguistic studies forces us to reevaluate our inherited understanding of evolution.” —Oren Harman, The New Republic “It is not only an enjoyable read, replete with ideas and facts of interest but it does the most valuable thing a book can do—it makes you think and reexamine your premises and long-held conclusions.” —Adam Wilkins, BioEssays

Book excerpt: The world’s most revered and eloquent interpreter of evolutionary ideas offers here a work of explanatory force unprecedented in our time—a landmark publication, both for its historical sweep and for its scientific vision. With characteristic attention to detail, Stephen Jay Gould first describes the content and discusses the history and origins of the three core commitments of classical Darwinism: that natural selection works on organisms, not genes or species; that it is almost exclusively the mechanism of adaptive evolutionary change; and that these changes are incremental, not drastic. Next, he examines the three critiques that currently challenge this classic Darwinian edifice: that selection operates on multiple levels, from the gene to the group; that evolution proceeds by a variety of mechanisms, not just natural selection; and that causes operating at broader scales, including catastrophes, have figured prominently in the course of evolution. Then, in a stunning tour de force that will likely stimulate discussion and debate for decades, Gould proposes his own system for integrating these classical commitments and contemporary critiques into a new structure of evolutionary thought. In 2001 the Library of Congress named Stephen Jay Gould one of America’s eighty-three Living Legends—people who embody the “quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication, and exuberance.” Each of these qualities finds full expression in this peerless work, the likes of which the scientific world has not seen—and may not see again—for well over a century.

It is an existence by itself in the universe. What does it know of the universe? It knows nothing, so far as we know. What does it know of (concerning or about) itself? We know that it does not know anything of itself. According to the understanding and knowing of men, it is an existence by itself in the universe, and it knows nothing either of itself or of the universe. And the reason why it knows nothing of the universe is because it knows nothing of itself 2. There is a flower by the wayside. It is a higher existence in the universe than the pebble. According to the classification of naturalists, it belongs to a different kingdom of existence. It belongs to the vegetable kingdom; and the pebble belongs to the inorganised kingdom of nature. It has besides a sort of animation or life, called vegetable life. What does it know of the universe? Nothing. What does it know of itself? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holism and Evolution It is my belief that Holism and the holistic point of view will prove important in their bearings on some of the main problems of science and philosophy, ethics, art and allied subjects. These bearings are, however, not fully discussed in this work, which is more of the nature of an introduction, and is concerned more with the laying of foundations than with the superstructure. I have no time at present to do more than write an introductory sketch; but I hope in the years to come to find time to follow up the subject and to show how it affects the higher spiritual interests of mankind. The old concepts and formulas are no longer adequate to express our modern outlook. The old bottles will no longer hold the new wine. The spiritual temple of the future, while it will be built largely of the old well-proved materials, will require new and ampler foundations in the light of the immense extension of our intellectual horizons. This little book indicates the lines along which my own mind has trav elled in the search for new and more satisfactory concepts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy, Based on the Doctrine of Evolution, Vol. 2 of 2: With Criticisms on the Positive Philosophy It is now time to explain what the Darwinian theory is. At the outset we may observe that while it is a common error to speak of Mr. Darwin as if he were the originator of the derivation theory, the opposite error is not unfrequently committed of alluding to him as if he had contributed nothing to the establishment of that theory save the doctrine of natural selection. Mr. Mivart habitually thus alludes to him. In fact, however, Mr. Darwin's merits are twofold. He was the first to marshal the arguments from classification.
