Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippines and the Far East It has been laid upon me to write this book. After eight years experience among similar social conditions in British India, and more than two years residence in the Philippines, it came to me as a duty to set down in order the things which American voters and American Christians ought to know for their guidance in helping shape the policies of our nation, and furnishing the support for our Missionary Societies in the work God has appointed each to do among these people. Such readers as but dimly comprehend the essential divineness of "the powers that be" will be puzzled to know why so much space has been given to matters which they would denominate purely political. This will cause 110 confusion, however, to those who believe that God works through nations as well as through His Church tor the establishment of the kingdom of righteousness. Because I firmly believe that our army and navy, our governor, the Commission, the judges, the constabulary, and the schoolteachers, and all who toil with them have a divinely-allotted part in Christ's program for the Filipino people. I have tried to set forth some of the work which they are trying to do. Here are nearly eight million people emerging from the twilight of a belated civilization into the high noon of modern life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East and Oceania Agricultural Situation: Review of 1966 and Outlook for 1967 The year 1966 brought gains in total agricultural production to some countries of the Far East, losses to others. Failure often struck where success was most needed. With massive aid from abroad, india strove to fill food deficits arising from the disastrous drought of 1965 only to find that 1966 harvests were scarcely better than the year before. Having drawn down stocks reserved from the bumper crop of India will need food grain imports in 1967 about equal to the 10 million tons1 of 1966 if per capita availability is not to decline further. Agricultural production in 1966 was up significantly from the previous year in the States of Malaya, the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. In South Viet Nam and Cambodia production declined for the third consecutive year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Decade of American Government in the Philippines, 1903-1913 The possession of the Philippines came suddenly and unexpectedly to the American people. A succession Of events which were not anticipated, but which could not properly be avoided, bound the islands to us. In Apiil 1898, war was commenced to end Spanish domination in Cuba, but the first blow was struck in the Far East. For a long period the United States had kept a small squadron in Asiatic waters, and at the beginning of the war, no American naval base then existing, it was gathered at Hongkong. The British government, complying with its duty as a neutral, ordered the American Ships to depart. Three possible directions were open to the Navy Depart ment: interne at Hongkong and remain under British control for the period of the war; return to the United States, passing from port to port for those limited supplies of fuel which international regulations permit; or take a base from the enemy. This last course was adopted, and on May 1, Commodore Dewey entered the harbor of Ma nila, destroyed the Spanish fleet, and captured the naval station at Cavite. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China and the Far East The following chapters were first delivered as addresses during the recent second decennial celebration of the founding of Clark University. Under the general direction of the President, Dr. G. Stanley Hall, each Department arranged for a gathering of specialists who should give a series of lectures upon topics of present interest in its special field. The Department of History held a conference upon China and the Far East. The aim was two-fold: first, to emphasize the importance of presenting in school and college work the leading features of the development of the Eastern world - a subject that better illustrates the working of the laws of history, and is of more vital importance to the civilization of today, than much that forms the subject matter of the usual history courses; second, to do its part in furthering a more general and accurate knowledge of Far Eastern conditions. During the nineteen sessions of the conference, the lectures and papers of the forty-five authorities who took part in the meetings covered nearly every aspect of the situation in the Orient - political, social, economic, military, educational and religious. It was the original intention to publish all of the proceedings in a single volume, but as this would make the work of unwieldy size, it was decided to exclude the shorter addresses, together with all the material upon the Philippines and India, and to publish only certain of the more formal papers upon China, Japan and Korea.
