Book Synopsis A Linguistic History of Ancient Cyprus by : Philippa M. Steele
Download or read book A Linguistic History of Ancient Cyprus written by Philippa M. Steele and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering volume approaches the languages and scripts of ancient Cyprus from an interdisciplinary point of view, with a primarily linguistic and epigraphic approach supplemented by a consideration of their historical and cultural context. The focus is on furthering our knowledge of the non-Greek languages/scripts, as well as appreciating their place in relation to the much better understood Greek language on the island. Following on from recent advances in Cypro-Minoan studies, these difficult, mostly Late Bronze Age inscriptions are reassessed from first principles. The same approach is taken for non-Greek languages written in the Cypriot Syllabic script during the first millennium BC, chiefly the one usually referred to as Eteocypriot. The final section is then dedicated to the Phoenician language, which was in use on Cyprus for some hundreds of years. The result is a careful reappraisal of these languages/scripts after more than a century of sometimes controversial scholarship.

Download or read book Stones that Speak written by Robert D. Morritt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child I would often wonder when I saw an illustration of a stone tablet, and ask myself: What did the inscription mean? How did these people sound when they talked? What would that piece of clay say if it could speak! The enigma of the Phaistos Disc is revisited here in the light of new findings. From the various interpretations of the origin of the symbols depicted on the disc. Kober, Ventris, Chadwick and Bennett, the cryptologists are remembered for paving the way for us to understand the language and culture of early societies. Archaeological excavations, archaic languages and Myths are explored, together with theories of archaic Cretan relations as far away as the Black Sea. If this book enthuses just one person to forge ahead to uncover new information to allow “The Stones to Speak,” then I will be satisfied.
Download or read book Why and why Not written by Mark Titchner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Book Works: ""Why and Why Not" is a new book by Mark Titchner that embraces the fine tradition of the street corner prophet, tempered with the equally proud custom of keeping your mouth firmly shut. Constructed in chapters, with titles such as "I Against I" and "Policing Love with Neuroses", this publication represents a chain of declamatory "rants" that critically probe traditional notions of narrative authority. By graphically sequencing points with counterpoints, Titchner creates an assemblage where ideals are overturned and philosophies ruined."

Book Synopsis The Mystery Sphere of Athens by : Alan V. Gordon
Download or read book The Mystery Sphere of Athens written by Alan V. Gordon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is a mystery truly mysterious? This was the thought that ran through my puzzled mind, when I first saw the magic sphere of Helios, exhibited at the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. Why is this antiquity so terribly understated? Were the museum authorities trying to tell the visitor to move on and not to waste their valuable time looking at this particular exhibit? I was completely fascinated by the strange symbols and inscriptions, together with the statue of liberty lookalike, all covering the entire surface of the marble sphere. My fingers had automatically reached into my camera bag, pulling out my trusty old camera. Within less than a minute I had taken more than a dozen shots of this truly magical globe, covered with what I perceived to be sacred geometric symbolism.
