Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painters of the School of Ferrara In the following pages I have attempted to give a brief account of the famous school of painting that originated in Ferrara about the middle of the fifteenth century, and thence not only extended its influence to the other cities that owned the sway of the House of Este, but spread over all Emilia and Romagna, produced Correggio in Parma, and even shared in the making of Raphael at Urbino. Correggio himself is not included: he is too great a figure in Italian art to be treated as merely the member of a local school; and he has already been the subject of a separate monograph in this series. The classical volumes of Girolamo Baruffaldi are still indispensable to the student of the artistic history of Ferrara. It was, however, Morelli who first revealed the importance and significance of the Ferrarese school in the evolution of Italian art; and, although a few of his conclusions and conjectures have to be abandoned or modified in the light of later researches and discoveries, his work must ever remain our starting-point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Painting in Italy, From the Period of the Revival of the Fine Arts to the End of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 5 of 6: Containing the Schools of Bologna, Ferrara, Genoa, and Piedmont No Italian school has been described by abler pens. The Co. Canon. Malvasia was a real man of letters; and his life has been written by Crespi. His two volumes, entitled Felsina Pittrice, will continue to supply abundance of valuable informa tion, collected by the pupils of the Caracci, to whom he was known, and by whom he was assisted in this work; charged, however, with a degree of patriotic zeal at times too fervid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Italian Painters of the Renaissance Of course I have received much help from other writers and from friends. In the first place, from Morelli. He knew his Milanese even better than other schools. It has happened again and again that my own researches have compelled me to return to his conclusions after having departed from them. Bernardino de' Conti is a case in point. Fifteen years of toss ing backward and forward over this incredibly unequal painter have brought me back to the problem as Morelli left it. To Dr. Frizzoni my indebtedness is scarcely less. I owe acknow ledgment to the various books or articles of Count Malaguzzi Valeri, of Dr. W. Von Seidlitz, and of Mr. Herbert Cook on Milanese art; of Count Carlo Gamba and Dr. J. P. Richter on the Veronese; of Prof. Adolfo Venturi and Dr. Corrado Ricci on the school of Ferrara Bologna. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Pictures, Drawings and Photographs of Works of the School of Ferrara-Bologna, 1440-1540: Also of Medals of Members of the Houses of Este and Bentivoglio After Cosme Tura, in painting, comes Baldassarre d'este, the natural son of Niccolo III who, with the austere and stem Francesco Cossa, decorated the Palazzo Schifanoia with scenes. From the life of the Duke of Ferrara. To these may be added Ercole Roberti, who, nurtured as it were by Cosme Tura's examples Of art, beamed as a luminous meteor of Ferrarese art in the Quattrocento. The School Of Ferrara now rose in numbers and in fame, high above that Of the rest Of Emilia. In the lists of Bologna, Galasso, with Costa, Ercole Roberti, the imaginative Lorenzo Costa, and others, held the field; while in Modena and Reggio, the painters of the district imitated the masters Of Ferrara. So, too, the beautiful figures of Grandi, the bewitching imagery Of the canvas Of Dossi Of Ferrara, the vigorous paintings of Ortolano, and the delightful Madonnas of Garofalo, illumined the Cinquecento, and were the glory Of Emilia. The power of her spell is mighty still, and leads us to linger among the wonders of Renaissance art that adorn the churches and convents, the halls and palaces, upon the banks of Arno. Although the ravages of time and the neglect of man have doomed many precious works to destruction, enough is still left to show us the glory of the art of Florence in her golden days. Enough remains to give us a clear and definite idea of the style of each individual artist in the long roll of illustrious masters who succeeded each other from the days of Giotto to those of Michelangelo, and who were, many of them, not only painters, but architects, sculptors, goldsmiths, men of letters, and even poets. It is a list of famous names and striking personalities such as no other art-history in the world can offer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 2 of 2: The Italian Schools; Based on the Handbooks of Kugler The Dukes of Ferrara called to their service Niccolo Pisano and Pietro della Francesca, and both these distin guished painters may have had some share in forming the Ferrarese school, which, however, bears no witness to the influence of either of them, but, like other schools of North Italy, shows that of Sguarcione and Jacopo Bellini at Padua. It was not until the second half of the fifteenth century that the true Ferrarese school, which was destined to have so great an influence over the art of Central Italy, and which even indirectly contributed, as ill hereafter be seen, to the formation of Raphael and Correggio, may be said to have been founded by two painters who deserve special noticeflcosimo Tum, called il Cosme, and Francesco oossol.
