Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

Book excerpt: The hydroxyl radical OH and hydroperoxy radical HO2 radicals are key species in many oxidation processes in the atmosphere. The degradation of volatile organic compounds under tropospheric conditions is induced by reactions with hydroxyl radicals followed by the subsequent chemistry of the initial OH oxidation products with O2. This thesis was focused on the kinetic study of some of these atmospherically relevant reactions to better understand their oxidation mechanisms using an experimental system of laser photolysis coupled to Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF, for OH radical) and continuous-wave Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (cw-CRDS, for OH, HO2 and RO2 radicals) detection techniques. After determining the infrared spectrum of OH, HO2 and CH3O2 radicals in the near infrared region and the absorption cross-sections of few selected lines, four systems were studied with the above mentioned techniques: CH3O2 + OH, C2H5O2 + OH, C3H7O2 + OH and C4H9O2 + OH. The rate constant and the HO2 yield of the four reactions were determined. In addition, the rate constants of few secondary reactions such as CH3O + HO2, CH3O + CH3O or OH + HO2 have been determined.

Developing or deploying instruments tomake further observations demands a thorough understanding of thechemical and spectroscopic principles on which such measurementsdepend. Written as an authoritative guide to the techniques of instrumentalmeasurement for the atmospheric scientist, research student orundergraduate, Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurementfocuses on the instruments used to make real time measurements ofatmospheric gas and aerosol composition. Topics covered include howthey work, their strengths and weaknesses for a particular task, the platforms on which they have been deployed and how they arecalibrated. It explains the fundamental principles upon which theinstrumental techniques are based (ie what property of a moleculecan be exploited to enable its detection), what limits instrumentalsensitivity and accuracy, and the information that can be gainedfrom their use.

Book excerpt: Abstract: An accurate and reasonable technique combining direct absorption spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) methods is developed to quantitatively measure the concentrations of hydroxyl in CH4 /air flat laminar flame. In our approach, particular attention is paid to the linear laser-induced fluorescence and absorption processes, and experimental details as well. Through measuring the temperature, LIF signal distribution and integrated absorption, spatially absolute OH concentrations profiles are successfully resolved. These experimental results are then compared with the numerical simulation. It is proved that the good quality of the results implies that this method is suitable for calibrating the OH-PLIF measurement in a practical combustor.

Book excerpt: The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the dominant oxidant in the atmosphere, controlling the lifetimes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and contributing to the formation of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The oxidation of VOCs by OH propagates a radical cycle between OH, the hydroperoxy radical (HO2), and organic peroxy radical (RO2). Due to its importance in the atmosphere, there is a substantial body of literature investigating ROX (≡ OH + HO2 + RO2) chemistry in the outdoor environment, but few measurements occurring indoors, where people spend the majority of their time. This work includes the first measurements of OH and HO2 in a residential environment during use of a gas stove. Emissions from the gas stove quickly create a complex indoor atmosphere with unexpectedly high concentrations of OH and HO2, suggesting missing radical sources in indoor spaces. In more pristine regions, there has been significant disagreement between measurements and modeled concentrations of ROX. While progress has been made in improving OH agreement in deciduous forests, HO2 and RO2 model disagreement persists. Measurements of radicals spanning three forested campaigns are compared through a chemical coordinate analysis and suggest that newly proposed radical loss pathways still cannot account for the discrepancies between model and measurements. Finally, measurements of radical species and their major precursors in a coniferous forest emphasize the importance of nitrous acid (HONO) on ROX concentrations. HONO photolyzes to form OH and NO, producing a substantial amount of total ROX. HONO concentrations are particularly difficult to model, as there are numerous sources of varying importance in different environments. While common chemical mechanisms only include gas-phase reactions of HONO, heterogeneous reactions were added in order to characterize sources of HONO in the remote, forested environment. Overall, this work discusses missing sources and sinks of radicals and their major precursor, HONO, in indoor spaces, deciduous, and coniferous forests, addressing gaps in our understanding of radical chemistry that impact the formation of secondary air pollution.

Book excerpt: Peroxy radicals RO2 (with R = H or CxHy) play an important role in the photo-oxidation cycles of the troposphere. They are produced mainly via the atmospheric oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by OH radicals and subsequent reactions with O2. They can further react with NO to produce NO2, witch is an important reaction of tropospheric ozone generation. To understand the mechanism of this tropospheric ozone generation, precise and accurate measurements of ambient peroxy radical concentrations are essential. And not only atmospheric concentration measurements but also atmospheric kinetics studies such as lifetime measurements of peroxy radicals are necessary. Recent publications show big differences between measured peroxy radical concentrations and those calculated with chemical models. These could be caused by missing reaction pathways and uncertainties in reaction yields and rate constants. To investigate these missing reactions and the uncertainties in known peroxy radical reactions via ambient measurements, newly developed two instruments as described below are applied. One is a technique for the selective measurement of atmospheric peroxy radical concentrations of HO2 and RO2 using the PERCA technique. HO2 radicals are selectively removed by using a glass denuder to achieve the selective measurement. The other one is a technique for total HO2 loss rate measurement in the atmosphere by using laser-flash photolysis and LIF detection of HO2. Generated HO2 radicals by laser-flash photolysis react with ambient reactive species such as NOX in the reaction tube. HO2 loss is measured using LIF at 308 nm coupled with chemical conversion with NO.

Book excerpt: This highly practical handbook is an exhaustive treatment of eddy covariance measurement that will be of keen interest to scientists who are not necessarily specialists in micrometeorology. The chapters cover measuring fluxes using eddy covariance technique, from the tower installation and system dimensioning to data collection, correction and analysis. With a state-of-the-art perspective, the authors examine the latest techniques and address the most up-to-date methods for data processing and quality control. The chapters provide answers to data treatment problems including data filtering, footprint analysis, data gap filling, uncertainty evaluation, and flux separation, among others. The authors cover the application of measurement techniques in different ecosystems such as forest, crops, grassland, wetland, lakes and rivers, and urban areas, highlighting peculiarities, specific practices and methods to be considered. The book also covers what to do when you have all your data, summarizing the objectives of a database as well as using case studies of the CarboEurope and FLUXNET databases to demonstrate the way they should be maintained and managed. Policies for data use, exchange and publication are also discussed and proposed. This one compendium is a valuable source of information on eddy covariance measurement that allows readers to make rational and relevant choices in positioning, dimensioning, installing and maintaining an eddy covariance site; collecting, treating, correcting and analyzing eddy covariance data; and scaling up eddy flux measurements to annual scale and evaluating their uncertainty.

Book excerpt: The OH radical is an important oxidant in the atmosphere, as it controls the chemical lifetime of many trace gases and promotes the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and ozone (O3). As a result, it is important to identify OH sources and sinks in outdoor and indoor environments, to understand their impact on air quality. Measurements of total OH reactivity were conducted in an Indiana forest, near the city of Bloomington. The measured OH reactivity agreed well with the calculated OH reactivity based on measured OH sinks. On certain days, missing OH reactivity greater than 30% was observed, which correlated with wind speed and direction. Similar OH reactivity work was performed in a Colorado ponderosa pine forest, where a previous study reported a discrepancy of 30% between the measured and calculated OH reactivity. To evaluate this, total OH reactivity was measured at the Manitou Experimental Forest site. From this work, it was determined that monoterpenes, MBO and their oxidation products corresponded to more than 70% to the total OH reactivity. The OH reactivity budget was closed by including the model oxidation products, which corresponded up to 35% to the total OH reactivity. To understand the impacts of OH radicals in indoor environments, the measurement of OH reactivity were conducted in a Purdue tiny house by characterizing the emission of hair-care products (HCPs). From these experiments, it was determined the oxidation by OH radical was the major loss processes of HCP emissions. The elevated chemicals during the HCP application can have the potential to influence outdoor air quality by promoting SOA and O3 production. Lastly, the absolute rate constant for the reaction of OH with methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) was measured in laboratory experiments at the temperature range of 273 - 368 K. The rate constant for OH and MEK was found to be 1.1 ± 0.1 x 10-12 cm3 molecules-1 s-1 at 298 K and the Arrhenius expression was determined as k = (1.21 ± 0.29) x10-12 exp [-(135 ± 95.9) /T]) for the temperature range of 273 - 368 K.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now a quarter of a century since Junge and his coworkers recovered the first sample from the sulfate aerosol layer in the stratosphere. Since that time vast strides have been made in determining its physical properties and morphology. These investigations have been performed with instruments on board aircraft and balloon platforms as in the early days, with ground-based lidar (optical radar), and most recently with satellite-borne optical instruments. It will become evident in Chapter 2 that in situ measurements by aircI'aft and ,balloon sensors complement rather than duplicate the remote techniques (lidar and satellite). Hence future programs will probably continue to utilize direct as well as indirect experimental techniques. Concurrently, with the observations of the gross properties of the aerosol layer, la~oratory and theoretical studies have sought to elucidate the chemical and micro physical processes which influence the formation and growth of the aerosol par ticles. The laboratory investigations have included studies of gas phase chemistry, and particle nucleation and growth mechanisms. Theoretical studies have revolved mainly around a series of models developed by atmospheric scientists. The earliest of these models was constructed by Junge and his colleagues. With the advent of third- and fourth-generation computers, the capacity to solve the quite complex continuity equations whi~h govern particle formation, growth, and removal has ad vanced to the point where most of the particle properties can be simulated with reasonable confidence.
