Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Superlattices", held in Erice, Italy, on April 21-May 1, 1987. This course was the fourth one of the International School of Solid-State Device Research, which is under the auspices of the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture. In the last ten years, we have seen an enormous increase in re search in the field of Semiconductor Heterostructures, as evidenced by the large percentage of papers presented in recent international conferences on semiconductor physics. Undoubtfully, this expansion has been made possible by dramatic advances in materials preparation, mostly by molecular beam epitaxy and organometallic chemical vapor deposition. The emphasis on epitaxial growth that was prevalent at the beginning of the decade (thus, the second course of the School, held in 1983, was devoted to Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Heterostructures) has given way to a strong interest in new physical phenomena and new material structures, and to practical applications that are already emerging from them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this course was to give an overview of the physics of artificial semiconductor structures confining electrons and photons. It furnishes the background for several applications in particular in the domain of optical devices, lasers, light emitting diodes or photonic crystals. The effects related to the microactivity polaritons, which are mixed electromagnetic radiation-exciton states inside a semiconconductor microactivity are covered. The study of the characteristics of such states shows strong relations with the domain of cavity quantum electrodynamics and thus with the investigation of some fundamental theoretical concepts.

Book excerpt: The investigation of the optical properties of heterostructures and quantum wells in semiconductors has produced a number of results of basic and practical importance. Experimental and theoretical studies of luminescence of a single quantum well under laser excitation established exciton transport as the mechanism for providing the electron-hole pairs which recombine within the well. This contradicts previous models of electron hole transport into quantum wells. The significance to heterojunction and quantum well lasers is obviously relevant. Contents: Exciton Transport in Optically Excited Al(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs Single Quantum Well; A New Quantum State in Multiple Quantum Well Structures; and High-density Excitonic State in Two-dimensional Multiquantum Wells. Keywords: Exciton; Luminescence; Magneto-optics; Semiconductor lasers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely recognized that an understanding of the optical pro perties of matter will give a great deal of important information re levant to the fundamental physical properties. This is especially true in semiconductor physics for which, due to the intrinsic low screening of these materials, the optical response is quite rich. Their spectra reflect indeed as well electronic as spin or phonon transitions. This is also in the semiconductor field that artificial structures have been recently developed, showing for the first time specific physical properties related to the low dimentionality of the electronic and vi bronic properties : with this respect the quantum and fractional quan tum Hall effects are among the most well known aspects. The associated reduced screening is also a clear manifestation of these aspects and as such favors new optical properties or at least significantly enhan ces some of them. For all these reasons, it appeared necessary to try to review in a global way what the optical investigation has brought today about the understanding of the physics of semiconductors. This volume collects the papers presented at the NATO Advanced study Inst i tut e on "Optical Properties of Semiconductors" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Sicily on March 9th to 20th, 1992. This school brought together 70 scientists active in research related to optical properties of semiconductors. There were 12 lecturers who pro vided the main contributions .

Book excerpt: The theoretical research performed under the auspices of this grant has played a central role in the investigation of optical and magneto-optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures. There are two major developments to report. One is that the method of finite elements has been proved to be a very effective, flexible, and powerful approach for the calculation of energy levels in semiconductor superlattices and quantum well structures. The second is the method of tight-binding which provides a full Brillouin-zone description of the energy bands of superlattices and quantum wells. These two approaches have allowed new theoretical insights in understanding the electronic and optical properties of heterostructures. The following items describe these new developments based on work supported by the research grant.

Book excerpt: Superlattices and Other Heterostructures deals with the optical properties of superlattices and quantum well structures with emphasis on phenomena governed by crystal symmetries. After a brief introduction to group theory and symmetries, methods for calculating spectra of electrons, excitons, and phonons in heterostructures are discussed. Further chapters cover absorption and reflection of light under interband transitions, cyclotron and electron spin-resonance, light scattering by free and bound carriers as well as by optical and acoustic phonons, polarized photoluminescence, optical spin orientation of electrons and excitons, and nonlinear optical and photogalvanic effects.
