Book excerpt: In The Opportunist, Guy Rundle comes to grips with John Howard, the prime minister who, on the eve of an election, seems to have turned round his political fortunes by spurning refugees and writing blank cheques for America's War on Terror. This is a brilliant account of John Howard's dominant ideas, his concerted 'dreaming' with its emphasis on unity and national identity that reveals him to be the most reactionary PM we have ever had, the only political leader who would allow ideas like those of One Nation to dominate the mainstream of Australian politics in order to improve his political chances. Rundle puts Howard in the context of the economic liberalism he shares with his colleagues and opponents and the conservative social ideology that sets him apart. It is a complex portrait in a radical mirror which relates John Howard to everything from Menzies's 'forgotten people' to the inadvertent glamour of the government's antidrug advertising. It is also a plea for right-thinking people of every political persuasion to resist the call to prejudice and reaction.

Book excerpt: They wanted to be married and so got married. Dance a leg to the famous Love Waltz ball on a sea liner on their wedding night-they did that too, 100 percent their way. Her way. Sensible was her head and merry was she in his company. Yet . . . The sea liner that she jumped off with her sleeping husband is silently sailing to its destination. Joanne looks at it from a crude boat that is rocking on roaring waters. Not worried. Not in doubt. She is following her heart. After all, she has seen her spirit appear to her, talking to her, and taking her to where she should be going. There are old souls to be judged, old stories to be unwound. Is it easy for Joanne and her husband, Pavlo, to usher in salvation for a generation of living and dead? Taking a step back, why was salvation denied to these same men? Was it justified? In principle, is there a paradise in waiting for the one who listens to the murmurs of his soul? In any case, principles are always remade. Tailored. Corrected. Souls inside questions when shackled; the body sulks, looking for a lost paradise. So reasoning warns caution . . . and then principles stand recorrected. But if you know nothing, you know it all.

Book excerpt: A deliciously sly, compulsively readable tale about greed, power and the world’s most devious family. When Alana Shropshire’s seventy-six-year-old father, Ed, starts dating Kelly, his twenty-eight-year-old nurse, a flurry of messages arrive from Alana’s brothers, urging her to help “protect Dad” from the young interloper. Alana knows that what Teddy and Martin really want to protect is their father’s fortune, and she tells them she couldn’t care less about the May–December romance. Long estranged from her privileged family, Alana, a hardworking single mom, has more important things to worry about. But when Ed and Kelly’s wedding is announced, Teddy and Martin kick into hyperdrive and persuade Alana to fly to their father’s West Coast island retreat to perform one simple task in their plan to make the gold digger go away. Kelly, however, proves a lot more wily than expected, and Alana becomes entangled in an increasingly dangerous scheme full of secrets and surprises. Just how far will her siblings go to retain control? Smart, entertaining and brimming with shocking twists and turns, The Opportunist is both a thrill ride of a story and a razor-sharp view of who wields power in the world.

He argues that the Brexit vote and 2017 election outcome are signs of a deeper leadership crisis that has been developing over decades. The great transformations of the 1980s onwards have not only upended societies, they have reshaped elite rule itself. Too many leaders today, regardless of intent, are ignorant, precarious, rootless and self-serving. Although richer, they have lost coherence, influence and control. Increasingly, they are just reckless opportunists, getting what they can amid the chaos they have created. Their failings are not only damaging wider society, they are undermining the very foundations of the Establishment itself. The book, based on interviews with over 350 elite figures, asks: how did we end up producing the leaders that got us here and what can we do about it?

Book excerpt: Most of us think we know ourselves, and some of us actually do. Clive Mason was neither—he didn’t care. Our protagonist, for he could hardly be called a hero, was one of the fortunate people; he loved what he did, did it well, and was successful. For him, it wasn’t the money—though that helped—but the buzz he felt when he’d completed what he’d set out to do. Many experience a “Road to Damascus” moment in their lives, and Mason is one of those. Though those of us who have experienced it know it can come in many different forms.

'A portrait of a political opportunist who is also ... a sincere reactionary: putting back the clock because he believes in it, but also fanning the whirlwind of unreason in order to save his political skin.' —Peter Craven, Introduction 'The coincident occurrence of the asylum seeker confrontation and the attack on the U.S. has made visible the most dangerous and damaging thing he has done to the Australian polity...and that is to deepen contempt for such protection as we did have from unbridled executive power, mass hysteria, the rush to surrender our freedoms and offer them up on the alter of crisis.' —Guy Rundle, The Opportunist Guy Rundle was a co-founding editor of Arena, a magazine of political and social comment. Book excerpt: It’s been said that software is eating the planet. The modern economy—the world itself—relies on technology. Demand for the people who can produce it far outweighs the supply. So why do developers occupy largely subordinate roles in the corporate structure? Developer Hegemony explores the past, present, and future of the corporation and what it means for developers. While it outlines problems with the modern corporate structure, it’s ultimately a play-by-play of how to leave the corporate carnival and control your own destiny. And it’s an emboldening, specific vision of what software development looks like in the world of developer hegemony—one where developers band together into partner firms of “efficiencers,” finally able to command the pay, respect, and freedom that’s earned by solving problems no one else can. Developers, if you grow tired of being treated like geeks who can only be trusted to take orders and churn out code, consider this your call to arms. Bring about the autonomous future that’s rightfully yours. It’s time for developer hegemony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Socialist in Sheep's Clothing That's what Joe Biden is. "Ordinary Joe" bills himself as a unifying "moderate," but he's far more dangerous than many realize. In fact, he's on board with the extreme Left on every vital issue—from the "Green New Deal," to trampling on the constitutional rights of gun owners and Christians, to socialist schemes that threaten to turn the United States into Venezuela. George Neumayr, a savvy and seasoned reporter, exposes Biden's radicalism and proves—often with the candidate's own words—why his presidency would be a disaster for America. In The Biden Deception, you’ll learn how and why a Biden administration would: Undercut law and order Erase our national borders Insist on abortion on demand across the country Repeal the Trump tax cuts Treat Communist China as an ally rather than a dangerous foe Pick up where Obama left off in “remaking” America—but far more aggressively Be the stepping-stone to power for an even more leftist Democratic Party that takes its cue from “AOC and the Squad” All elections are important, but 2020 will determine whether the U.S. becomes a socialist state—modeled on “lockdown America”—or renews its commitment to freedom and capitalism. Read The Biden Deception and don’t be fooled.

Book excerpt: "John 'Whitey' White was born to working-class parents in 1937 and spent the first ten years of his life in the small village of Seacliff, north of Dunedin. Almost everyone in Seacliff had some connection to Seacliff Mental Asylum, including John's parents, who met and worked there. After moving to Nelson at the age of ten, John attended Nelson College and became involved in football, a lifelong passion. Upon leaving school he joined the Lands and Survey as a chainman - surveying on foot the rugged terrain of the greater Nelson region and later, the West Coast. John spent ten years with Lands and Survey before leaving his stable government job to start his own business ventures in Hokitika, which included: a dairy, a goldmine, a guest house, a tourist centre and property development to name but a few. He completed his National Service, rising to the rank of second lieutenant, helped start a new football club, served as a councillor on the Hokitika Borough Council and on the Hokitika Businessmen's Association and spent twenty-three years as the public relations officer for Westland, constantly battling against negativity and naysayers for a more progressive town and development of the tourism industry. A Bloody Opportunist reflects John's energy and passion for progress during his forty-three years on the West Coast"--https://www.copypress.co.nz/shop/a-bloody-opportunist.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Paul Johnson, “a very readable and entertaining biography” (The Washington Post) about one of the most important figures in modern European history: Napoleon Bonaparte In an ideal pairing of author and subject, the magisterial historian Paul Johnson offers a vivid look at the life of the strategist, general, and dictator who conquered much of Europe. Following Napoleon from the barren island of Corsica to his early training in Paris, from his meteoric victories and military dictatorship to his exile and death, Johnson examines the origins of his ferocious ambition. In Napoleon's quest for power, Johnson sees a realist unfettered by patriotism or ideology. And he recognizes Bonaparte’s violent legacy in the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. Napoleon is a magnificent work that bears witness to one individual's ability to work his will on history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Crouch (1903–1955) was the quintessential anticommunist paid government informer. A naïve, ill-educated recruit who found a family, a livelihood, and a larger romantic cause in the Communist Party, he spent more than fifteen years organizing American workers, meeting with Soviet leaders, and trying to infiltrate the U.S. military with Communist soldiers. He left the party in 1941, in part because of a growing conviction that the leadership had become dictatorial, but also in part out of vengeance for perceived wrongs. As public perceptions of Communism shifted during the Cold War, Crouch’s economic failures, desire for fame, and greed morphed him into a vehement ideologue for the anti-Communist movement. During five years of testimony, he named Robert Oppenheimer, Charlie Chaplin, and many others as Communists and claimed the civil rights movement was Communist inspired. In 1954, much of Crouch’s testimony was exposed as perjury, but he remained defiant to the end. How, and why, one southerner could become a loyal foot soldier on both sides of the Cold War ideological divide is the subject of Gregory Taylor’s incisive biography. Relying on personal papers, FBI records, and official Communist Party files, Taylor weaves through the seemingly contradictory life of the individual once known as the most dangerous man in America.
