Book excerpt: A vast tract of land lying east of the Mississippi River, south of the Great Lakes, and north of Florida was ceded to the United States by the British in the Treaty of Paris which ended the Revolutionary War. However, the British were slow to evacuate the area and continued to encourage the Indians to thwart American settlement of the region. It was not until the end of the War of 1812, which was fought largely in this region, that the United States gained complete control of the area. This work provides a history of the northern part of this region from the early French explorations down through the War of 1812, but with emphasis on the period from the Revolutionary War through 1814.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Country: Between the Years 1783 and 1815; Including Military Operations That Twice Saved to the United States the Country West of the Alleghany Mountains After the Revolutionary War Such readers have generally noticed that his tories of the United States, even the largest ones, when mentioning this extensive and invaluable region at all, give a very scant account of the dangers which would have attended its loss to the American Union, or of the military Operations that twice, at least, saved it to, and maintained it in, the Union. In writing it is easier, for several reasons, to generalize than to focus one' s attention on the detail that shows the animating principle, or want of principle, that influenced the lives, thoughts, acts, and accomplishments of the people. This statement may explain how it is that many write so much and yet impart so little of practical information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federalist Frontier traces the development of Federalist policies and the Federalist Party in the first three states of the Northwest Territory—Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois—from the nation’s first years until the rise of the Second Party System in the 1820s and 1830s. Relying on government records, private correspondence, and newspapers, Kristopher Maulden argues that Federalists originated many of the policies and institutions that helped the young United States government take a leading role in the American people’s expansion and settlement westward across the Appalachians. It was primarily they who placed the U.S. Army at the fore of the white westward movement, created and executed the institutions to survey and sell public lands, and advocated for transportation projects to aid commerce and further migration into the region. Ultimately, the relationship between government and settlers evolved as citizens raised their expectations of what the federal government should provide, and the region embraced transportation infrastructure and innovation in public education. Historians of early American politics will have a chance to read about Federalists in the Northwest, and they will see the early American state in action in fighting Indians, shaping settler understandings of space and social advancement, and influencing political ideals among the citizens. For historians of the early American West, Maulden’s work demonstrates that the origins of state-led expansion reach much further back in time than generally understood.

Book excerpt: Defending a New Nation, 1783-1811, the first volume of the "U.S. Army Campaigns of the War of 1812" series, tells the story of several military campaigns against Indians in the Northwest Territory, the Army's role in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion (1794), the Quasi-War with France and confrontations with Spain, the influence of Jeffersonian politics on the Army's structure, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. From the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 to the beginning of the War of 1812, the nascent United States Army encountered significant challenges, both within its own ranks and in the field. The Army faced hostile American Indians in the west, domestic insurrections over taxation, threats of war from European powers, organizational changes, and budgetary constraints. It was also a time of growth and exploration, during which Army officers led expeditions to America's west coast and founded a military academy.
