Book excerpt: A delta wing at a high angle of attack produces two vortices that generally undergo dramatic increases in core size, followed by the formation of regions of reversed flow. This phenomenon is called vortex breakdown and can have significant effects on the aircraft's lift, drag, and moment coefficients. The objective of this thesis is to provide a base line model of the compressible vortex, independent of the complex body interaction with the delta wing. The mathematical model is then used to simulate vortex breakdown for various vortex strengths, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers with particular attention given to the effects of compressibility. After running many simulations it was found that Mach number has a favorable effect by delaying vortex breakdown as defined above. Holding Reynolds number and vortex strength constant while increasing Mach number reduced the effective vortex strength while compressing the flow. Another important result of this compressible flow study was the disappearance of non-unique solutions at Re = 200 and V = 1.0 as Mach number was increased. No paths of non-unique solutions were found for M> 0.2. Keywords: Navier stokes solutions. (KR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the full-potential modeling of a blade-vortex interaction was made. A primary goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods of modeling the vortex. The model problem restricts the interaction to that of an infinite wing with an infinite line vortex moving parallel to its leading edge. This problem provides a convenient testing ground for the various methods of modeling the vortex while retaining the essential physics of the full three-dimensional interaction. A full-potential algorithm specifically tailored to solve the blade-vortex interaction (BVI) was developed to solve this problem. The basic algorithm was modified to include the effect of a vortex passing near the airfoil. Four different methods of modeling the vortex were used: (1) the angle-of-attack methods, (2) the lifting-surface method, (3) the branch-cut method, and (4) the split-potential method. A side-by-side comparison of the four models was conducted. these comparisons included comparing generated velocity fields, a subcritical interaction, and a critical interaction. The subcritical and critical interactions are compared with experimentally generate results. The split-potential model was used to make a survey of some of the more critical parameters which affect the BVI.

Book excerpt: The structure of a compressible free vortex has been analyzed while undergoing convection in a quasi-uniform stream flow. Holographic interferograms several reveal radial density profiles of the vortex at different stages of its development during convection. A general mathematical expression is found which closely describes the distribution of density inside the vortex. By use of experimental data and the governing equations in an empirical/theoretical analysis, an extended physical description of the vortex is developed. The time behavior of the density, determined from the experiments, allows the solution of the Continuity Equation and a distribution of the radial component of fluid velocity relative to the vortex center is obtained. The density information, supplemented by an independent determination of pressure is the used in the Radial Momentum Equation to obtain a distribution of the circumferential component of fluid velocity relative to the vortex center, thus completing the description of the radial dependence of the velocities inside the vortex. Furthermore, the calculated velocities are used to evaluate the magnitudes of the convective and diffusive terms of the Angular Momentum Equation, thus providing insight into the question of the relative effects of compressibility and viscosity on the internal structure and behavior of the vortex in terms of the distribution and transport of angular momentum. Keywords: Blade vortex interaction, Rotary wing flight, Rotor wake, Compressible free vortex. (aw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents inviscid compressible simulations for the orthogonal blade-vortex interaction. A numerical model between the tail rotor of a helicopter and the trailing vortex system formed by the main rotor blades is assumed. The study takes a 'building-block' approach to investigating this problem. Firstly, the impulsive instantaneous blocking of the axial core flow by a flat plate is considered. In the second step, the three-dimensional gradual cutting of the vortex by a sharp flat-plate that moves at a finite speed through the vortex is performed. Finally the chopping of the vortex by a blunt leading edge aerofoil, which incorporates both the blocking effect and also the stretching and distortion of the vortex lines is studied. The solutions reveal that the compressibility effects are strong when the axial core flow of the vortex is impulsively blocked. This generates a weak shock-expansion structure propagating along the vortex core on opposite sides of the cutting surface. The shock and expansion waves are identified as the prominent acoustic signatures in the interaction. In a simplified, two-dimensional axisymmetric model, the modelling of the physical evolution of the vortex, including the evolution of the complex vortical structures that controls the vortex core size near the cutting surface, are studied. Furthermore, the three dimensional simulations revealed that there is a secondary and a tertiary noise sources due to compressibility effects at the blade leading edge and due to the shock-vortex interaction taking place on the blade, which is exposed to a transonic free-stream flow.

Book excerpt: This monograph provides in-depth analyses of vortex dominated flows via matched and multiscale asymptotics, and demonstrates how insight gained through these analyses can be exploited in the construction of robust, efficient, and accurate numerical techniques. The book explores the dynamics of slender vortex filaments in detail, including fundamental derivations, compressible core structure, weakly non-linear limit regimes, and associated numerical methods. Similarly, the volume covers asymptotic analysis and computational techniques for weakly compressible flows involving vortex-generated sound and thermoacoustics. The book is addressed to both graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: A perturbation form of an implicit conservative, noniterative numerical algorithm for the two-dimensional thin layer Navier-Stokes and Euler equations is used to computer the interaction flow field of a vortex with stationary airfoil. A Lamb-like analytical vortex having a finite core is chosen to interact with a thick (NACA 0012) and a thin (NACA 64A006) airfoil independently in transonic flow. Two different configurations of vortex interaction are studied: (1) when the vortex is fixed at one location in the flow field; and (2) when the vortex is convecting past the airfoil at free stream velocity. Parallel computations of this interacting flow field are also done using a version of the Transonic Small Disturbance Code (ATRAN2). A special treatment of the leading edge region for thin airfoils is included in this code. With this, the three methods gave qualitatively similar results for the weaker interactions considered in this study. However, the strongest interactions considered proved to be beyond the capabilities of the small disturbance code.

Book excerpt: Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.
