Book excerpt: Emma Johnston (a pseudonym) is an African American resident of Durham, North Carolina, whose son was brutally murdered in 2007. Combining the voices of Emma and her coauthor Simon Partner, a professor at Duke University, the book recounts the postwar history of one of the South's fastest-growing communities through the eyes of one of its most disadvantaged residents. In the process, the book attempts to shed light on the social and economic conditions that led to the murder of Emma's son, one of 25 to 30 people (many of them African American young men) who fall victim to gun violence each year in Durham.

Download or read book We Believe You written by Annie E. Clark and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From young activists at the forefront of the movement to end sexual assault on college campuses, a collection of survivor stories that will connect with students and inform and inspire us all Across the U.S. student activists are exposing a pervasive cover-up of sexual assault on college campuses. Every day more survivors come forward. But other survivors choose not to. We Believe You elevates the stories the headlines about this issue have been missing--more than 30 experiences of trauma, healing and everyday activism, representing a diversity of races, economic and family backgrounds, gender identities, immigration statuses, interests, capacities and loves. More than 1 in 5 women and 5 percent of men are sexually assaulted at college, a shocking status quo that might have stayed largely hidden and unaddressed but for the two authors of We Believe You. In 2013, Annie E. Clark and Andrea L. Pino, then 23 and 20, building on the work of earlier activists, outed themselves as assault survivors and filed a federal complaint against the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) for mishandling such crimes; within a month, the U.S. government began to investigate UNC. Within a year, dozens of colleges were under federal investigation. But Clark and Pino rightly see themselves as two among many. Students from every kind of college and university--large and small, public and private, highly selective and less so--are sounding alarms and staking claims to justice by filing complaints, by pressing charges, and by simply living beyond the effects of assault and the betrayals of their schools. A sampling of their voices speak out in this book"--

Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestseller | Winner of the Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award Omaha Beach legend Ray Lambert's unforgettable firsthand account of D-Day “Lambert landed on [Omaha Beach] as a 23-year-old Army medic. ... As the bullets cut down his comrades, he raced repeatedly back into the sea to drag out wounded soldiers.” —New York Times Seventy-five years ago, he hit Omaha Beach with the first wave. Now D-Day legend Ray Lambert (1920-2021) delivers one of the most remarkable memoirs of our time, a tour-de-force of remembrance evoking his role as a decorated World War II medic who risked his life to save the heroes of Normandy. At five a.m. on June 6, 1944, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ray Lambert worked his way through a throng of nervous soldiers to a wind-swept deck on a troopship off the coast of Normandy, France. A familiar voice cut through the wind and rumble of the ship’s engines. “Ray!” called his brother, Bill. Ray, head of a medical team for the First Division’s famed 16th Infantry Regiment, had already won a silver star in 1943 for running through German lines to rescue trapped men, one of countless rescues he’d made in North Africa and Sicily. “This is going to be the worst yet,” Ray told his brother, who served alongside him throughout the war. “If I don’t make it,” said Bill, “take care of my family.” “I will,” said Ray. He thought about his wife and son–a boy he had yet to see. “Same for me.” The words were barely out of Ray’s mouth when a shout came from below. To the landing craft! The brothers parted. Their destinies lay ten miles away, on the bloodiest shore of Normandy, a plot of Omaha Beach ironically code named “Easy Red.” Less than five hours later, after saving dozens of lives and being wounded at least three separate times, Ray would lose consciousness in the shallow water of the beach under heavy fire. He would wake on the deck of a landing ship to find his battered brother clinging to life next to him. Every Man a Hero is the unforgettable story not only of what happened in the incredible and desperate hours on Omaha Beach, but of the bravery and courage that preceded them, throughout the Second World War—from the sands of Africa, through the treacherous mountain passes of Sicily, and beyond to the greatest military victory the world has ever known.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Survivor Trilogy is a series of three short dramas that explore the trials of burn survivors as they strive to cope with their injuries and relationships during the course of their recovery. The first drama, a monologue called Blue Eyes of the Beholder or The Food Lion Blues, tells the story of a burn survivor who lost his wife in a house fire shortly after a marital spat over striving to get pregnant together. One day in line at the grocery store, this disillusioned accountant is questioned by a curious youth about his appearance, and through this encounter gets to know the boy's mother, a recently separated single woman struggling with her finances during her divorce proceedings. The survivor is entranced by the inquisitive boy and his mother, who both have the radiant blue eyes of his deceased spouse. In the course of assisting this woman in resurrecting her financial situation as she distances herself from her estranged husband, the two fall in love, and life renews itself. The second drama, Princess or The Ultra Joy of Doin' Dishes, captures the conversation of a female burn survivor and her husband after a dinner party at their new home with another couple in the neighborhood. The woman, a successful professional who met her spouse after she had been injured, was eager to discuss how she felt awkward and self-conscious while engaging with the handsome young couple. Her husband is amorous and attentive, and the two lovers take time to process the experience and their reaction to this newly born Four Seasons dinner group while doing the dishes in the kitchen. In the third drama called The Rising or Taking the Long Way to the Open Eye Cafe, a burn survivor meets the firefighter who saved him in the course of a therapy session years after he was rescued from the flames. The two men openly share their feelings and histories together, discussing how their personal experiences with tragedy had brought them to where they find themselves at the moment. The journey of the burn survivor leads away from anger and resentment to a new path in life. A bond between the two men is formed as they trace their lives away from the flames and discover how tragedy and heroism in former years have brought their lives together

Book Synopsis Confronting the Silence: A Holocaust Survivor’s Search for God by : Walter Ziffer
Download or read book Confronting the Silence: A Holocaust Survivor’s Search for God written by Walter Ziffer and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-10 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir, Walter Ziffer, a Holocaust survivor born in Czechoslovakia in 1927, recounts his boyhood experiences, the Polish and later German invasions of his hometown, the destruction of his synagogue, his Jewish community’s forced move into a ghetto, and his 1942 deportation and ensuing experiences in eight Nazi concentration and slave labor camps. In 1945, Ziffer returned to his hometown, trained as a mechanic and later emigrated to the US where he converted to Christianity, married, graduated from Vanderbilt University with an engineering degree, worked for General Motors before becoming a Christian minister. He taught and preached in Ohio, France, Washington DC and Belgium. He later returned to Judaism and considers himself a Jewish secular humanist. “The compelling story of an unfolding life carried by an insatiable search for meaning.” — Mahan Siler, retired Baptist minister “In Walter Ziffer’s beautifully written new book, you will learn of Walter’s complex life journey, and you may experience, thanks to his skillfully told story and clearly articulated questions and insights, a sense of his presence, the presence of a great man who finds in his own story lessons important for the rest of us, especially now.” —Richard Chess, Director, The Center for Jewish Studies at UNC Asheville “A powerful and unique addition to the literature of the Holocaust. Walter Ziffer’s memoir not only recounts his own personal resilience and survival of the camps, but also his own unusual spiritual journey in which he both becomes a Christian minister while retaining his quintessential Jewish identity. This is a learned, well-crafted, and fascinating new dimension to this literature.” — Michael Sartisky, President Emeritus, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities “The Holocaust portion [of this memoir]... is as true and chilling as a parent’s last words. His tale-telling prowess makes as strong a mental impression as it makes a factual one.” — Rob Neufeld, Asheville Citizen-Times
