A.; Communicated by His Children, for Publication in the Historical Magazine There was surely no lack of interest in the subject; and yet, after an interval of thirty years, no historian had been found to record these events, either for the honor of the country or its guidance in a future War. Even the Regiments which fought on our side had been dismembered, broken up, and scattered, and the record of their respective achievements ut terly lost; while those that fought against us had been enriched with every species of armo rial honor; and, even to this hour, in every part of the world where they appear, to be quartered, they are paraded under the historic memorials of our niagara, our fort erie, our plattsburg, and our baltimore, in common with those of vittoria, salamanca, and the Pumas. There are some, perhaps, who find an excuse for the indifference, to which I have alluded, in the errors and disasters of the War, as if the national pride might be wounded by an impartial narrative. Such a sentiment has, not unfrequently, been expressed in my hearing; but can it be needful to repel it, on this occa sion and before this audience? If it were well founded, how weak would it be to shut our eyes to the lessons of experience from any consider ation of this kind. In the discipline of com mon life, our most useful lessons are often drawn from our most painful experiences; and, in the complicated operations of War, neither the esprit dc corps nor the higher tactics are to be acquired without severe con icts and some hu miliating trials of disaster and defeat. If the fact were, indeed, as the objectors represent, it would be the more necessary for us to make it matter of history, that we might be guarded against the like disasters, in future - for history is the m anory of the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Frontier of France, Vol. 2 of 2: Thew Niagara Region and Adjacent Lakes Under French Control Such was the situation when in the summer of 1752 the Marquis Duquesne arrived from France to assume the unhappy task of governing Canada. At once his attention was turned to the defense and occupation of the Lakes and Ohio Valley. With the sanction of the King to "build on the Ohio such forts as are absolutely necessary, but no more," he planned an expedition for the ensuing year, placing in command the Chevalier Pierre Paul Marin, a veteran captain of infantry, most of whose 63 years had been spent in wilderness service. The engineer of the expedition was the Chevalier Le Mercier, who was also entrusted with the distribution of provisions. Duquesne speaks of him as "an officer possessing the rarest talent." These two, with an advance guard of 250 men, made their way to Niagara before the ice was out of the river, in the early spring of 1753. A much larger detachment followed later, under command of Michel Jean Hughes Pean, who was second in command. To his letters and reports we are indebted for many particulars of the campaign. In an era of favoritism and fraud, when flourished a system of dealings which we to-day call "graft," this expedition offered vast opportunities. If we may believe their contemporaries, Duquesne and his Intendant, Bigot, were in corrupt connivance for profit, power and pleasure. Religious services at Plymouth had been conducted, from the be ginning, by Elder Brewster, in the form of prayer and exhortation, and were kept up until a regular pastor was provided. Some of their exercises were conducted in a democratic manner. On Sunday afternoons, a question would be propounded by the elder, to which all had a right to speak. In the exercise of private judgment these religious meetings sometimes became the arena of intemperate debates; and after a pastor was called, it was difficult to retain one there, because of the restiveness of the people under even moderate discipline. The independent colony of Weston failed, but another was attempted at Cape Ann, where Gloucester now stands, by the Rev. John White, rector of Trinity Church, Dorchester, England, and several in uential persons whom he persuaded to join him. They expected to found there a ourishing fish ing colony, but the enterprise failed and was abandoned. White was not disheartened. He infused his own spirit into other powerful citizens, whose names afterward appeared conspicuous in the annals of New England. They formed a Company in 1628, and purchased a tract of land extending from three miles north of the Merrimac River to three miles south of the Charles River, and westward to the South Sea or Pacific Ocean. In the summer of that year, the Company sent John Endicott, one of their number (including his Wife and children), with emigrants, to settle on the domain. Endicott was commissioned governor or general manager of the colony; and then he began his long and eventful career in New England. He was then forty years of age; possessed of an imperious and unyielding will; was a most rigid Puritan in thought and manner; benevolent though austere, and was intolerant of all dissenting Opinions. Endicott conducted the little colony to Naumkeag, where some of White's men from Cape Ann were seated. After settling some disputes about the right of occupation and control, he named the place Salem, the Hebrew word for peaceful. There he soon displayed his stern Opposition to all vain amusements, by causing a May-pole to be cut down, which the Dorchester people had set up.
