Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical Reporter, Vol. 54: January-July, 1886 To afford relief and, if possible, cure the case. I recommend the following: Two parts of chloroform, two of olive oil, twenty five cubic centimetres Of the tincture of aco nite, and fifty of kerosene oil, to be rubbed on the head, covered with a cotton bandage. Mark this distinctly, because it might be mistaken for some remedy taken internally, and it would be a dangerous dose for any one. It prevents a too rapid evaporation of the chloroform, and at the same time pro teets the painful parts; it prevents the irri table nerves from atmospheric changes, and a recurrence of the attack. Also make a solution of strychnia {0 grain to three ounces of water, and add to it a little acetic acid, the acetic acid being used to complete the solu tion of strychnia. Sig. - Take two table spoonfuls three times a day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical and Physical Journal, 1829, Vol. 1 In order to meet the increase Of materials, which this new arrangement will afford, to convey as much practical information as the majority of contempora neous journals afford, and as the taste and neces sities Of the medical reader seem to require, the size Of the Journal has been considerably enlarged, and will be still further enlarged, as occasion requires. Plates will be furnished as often as the illustration of subjects renders them necessary - not so much, how ever, with a View to adorn the Journal, as to inform the reader. They will be always executed in the best style. An increase Of the price commensurate with the augmented cost will not be deemed unreasonable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Times, Vol. 1: October, 1851 Of the whole number of cases of which I have any memo randa, one was in the humerus, two in the forearm, two in the os femoris, and eight in the bones of the leg; seven underwent operations, and six got well by other means. Of the seven that were subjected to operations, one underwent amputation and recovered; three had setons passed through the ends, all of which were also reported to have been cured; nine submit ted to excision, drilling and the wire ligature; of these latter, one died, one recovered with the wire permanently imbedded in the bone, from which it could not be extracted, and the third, now six months after the operation, is still uncured. In the fatal case, as well as in the case subjected to amputation, the false joint was seated below the knee. In those that reco vered after wiring, it was in the forearm and in the cases treated by the seton, the humerus in one, the femur in another, and the tibia in another, was the seat of accident. In the ca ses that got well independent of Operation, the false joint was, with the exception of Case 13, situated in the bones of the leg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 36: February to August, 1847 The editor ofrthe New York Medical and Surgical Reporter, in defence of Dr. Green, calls attention to an article by M. Trousseau, recently pub lished, as affording additional evidence that this learned French physician and ifis associate, were not fully aware of the practicability of making medicinal applications to the interior of the larynx. In this article, the writer details one hundred and twelve cases of croup, in which he perform ed the operation of tracheotomy and he recommends, if there is reason to believe that the larynx alone rs the seat of the lesion, that a sponge, moistened with a solution of the nitrate of silver, be introduced through the artificial opening, and passed over the tracheal membrane. If Trous seau had been in the habit of making topical applications to the cavity of the larynx, in the way proposed by Dr. Green, and at the same time be lieved that the solution of nitrate of silver, locally applied, would exercise a salutary influence in controlling or modifying the disease, he would assuredly have availed himself of his knowledge and skill: in this-respect, before resorting to the. Operation of tracheotomy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
