Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, The World Television Industry uses economic analysis to examine recent changes in the television industry. It uses the theory of public good and a model of industrial organization to identify the major forces determining the nature of the television product in the late twentieth century. The forces of supply and demand for an unusual product - often requiring a 'double' sale, to a consumer and to an advertiser - are examined, as are alternative methods of financing. The all-pervading role of government is discussed at length.

Book Synopsis The Use and Abuse of Television by : J. Mallory Wober
Download or read book The Use and Abuse of Television written by J. Mallory Wober and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical review of the harms and benefits of television that also examines systems for maximizing television's benefits. The author breaks away from the conventional jargon of audience measurement and other traditional research methods, proposing instead new and alternative European and Australian methods of evaluating programming. Typical characterizations of the television screen – broadly defined to include television, home video, movies, games, programs and computers – as either the root of all social ills or the potential savior of society are reexamined. Wober's ultimately optimistic viewpoint seeks to trigger change in the way we think about and assess television and in turn ensure that screens will serve, rather than take advantage of, their users. Originally published in 1988, this thinking-piece concerns timeless issues still of import.

Channel 2 System Output at Detector ................................. 621 PREFACE The emerging networks in our society will touch upon the life of everyone. These networks have started to bring about an immense information revolution. The revolution within our intellectual life will be similar to the materialistic revolution that followed the invention of the steam and the internal combustion engines. From the perspective of the 1980s, the information networks are indeed evolving and their influence can only be gradual. However, the strides of progress are accelerating in the 1990s. Networks in our society offer the most candid area of convergence for the computer and the communication technologies. The two technologies are mature in their own right. However, there are a few major factors that prevent network engineers from constructing modern communication systems from components borrowed from each of these two technologies: • Major innovations are happening. • Specialized components evolve in synergistic patterns. • New technologies emerge. • Inquisitive minds cross disciplinary barriers.
Book Synopsis Television Regulation and Media Policy in China by : Yik-Chan Chin
Download or read book Television Regulation and Media Policy in China written by Yik-Chan Chin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1990s, there has been a crucial and substantial transformation in China’s television system involving institutional, structural and regulatory changes. Unravelling the implications of these changes is vital for understanding the politics of Chinese media policy-making and regulation, and thus a comprehensive study of this history has never been more essential. This book studies the transformation of the policy and regulation of the Chinese television sector within a national political and economic context from 1996 to the present day. Taking a historical and sociological approach, it engages in the theoretical debates over the nature of the transformation of media in the authoritarian Chinese state; the implications of the ruling party’s political legitimacy and China’s central-local conflicts upon television policy-making and market structure; and the nature of the media modernisation process in a developing country. Its case studies include broadcasting systems in Shanghai and Guangdong, which demonstrate that varied polices and development strategies have been adopted by television stations, reflecting different local circumstances and needs. Arguing that rather than being a homogenous entity, China has demonstrated substantial local diversity and complex interactions between local, national and global media, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese media, politics and policy, and international communications.
