Book Synopsis Edmund Spenser and the Eighteenth-Century Book by : Hazel Wilkinson
Download or read book Edmund Spenser and the Eighteenth-Century Book written by Hazel Wilkinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene (1590–6) occupied an important place in eighteenth-century culture. Spenser influenced almost every major writer of the century, from Alexander Pope to William Wordsworth. What was it like to read Spenser in the eighteenth century? Who made Spenserian books, and how did their owners use and interpret them? The first comprehensive study of all of the eighteenth-century editions of Edmund Spenser addresses these questions through bibliographical analysis, and through examination of the history of the book and of eighteenth-century literature and culture. Within these contexts, Hazel Wilkinson provides new information about the production, contents, texts, and reception of the eighteenth-century editions of Spenser, to illuminate how his cultural presence became so far-reaching. With each chapter structured around a major edition of Spenser's work, this volume provides a timely addition to arguments about the nature of literary history and the growing cult of great writers of the past.

Reviews of Memoirs of the New Age: "I love Memoirs of a New Age! And I want to tell you that for me, this is not just a book, its more like an earthquake. A quiet rumble, that tantalizes, then shakes, then kind of explodes many of your long cherished ideas of who god is and what a real relationship with god could be. If youre up for some spiritual awakening, buy this book, check out the website, join a readers discussion club or bring the book to your club! Like a wonderful meal, its meant to be shared." Irene Townsend, PhD Clinical Psychologist "I am building a really intimate relationship with this book the more I read it and the more I discuss it in our book club. At first it was just a great book of stories and poems and prayers. Then I started to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the language and the images, especially in the poems and prayers. Then as I discussed it with others, I began to see how the stories related to me personally and how healing it was for me to go inside and own my experiences as a child or a woman or a spiritual person, feelings prompted by the experiences of the characters or the author. Ive learned so much about myself and theres so much more to learn! This is a book that I dont have to put down when Im done as I have with so many wonderful books Ive read. I am going back over and over it to deepen and enrich my experience of what Im reading. Read it, embrace it, use it, enjoy it, savor it! Im giving this book to everyone I can think of for Christmas!" Helen Hillix-Di Santo, MA, MFT "Dear Editor, I have read Memoirs of The New Age and have been profoundly impacted by these stories. The author, Beth Green, has an uncanny ability to express our human experiences in terms of seeing how we act and react to life is so intricately tied to our perceptions and beliefs about God. The writing is real, poignant, challenging and provides the opportunity for me to explore my own perceptions of God through the character's eyes. I will be reading this over and over. Thank you for publishing it." Chris Reese

Book Synopsis Representations of Book Culture in Eighteenth-Century English Imaginative Writing by : Joanna Maciulewicz
Download or read book Representations of Book Culture in Eighteenth-Century English Imaginative Writing written by Joanna Maciulewicz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the new field of literary studies which is informed by book history and takes interest in the intersection of the ideal and material aspects of literature. It studies the ways eighteenth-century English novels, plays and poems illustrated the changes which the growth of literacy, the proliferation of writing and the emergence of print marketplace made in the social and cultural life of Britain and demonstrated the contingency of the emerging criticism on the technological and economic conditions of book production. The first part focusses on the representation of the tensions created by the emergence of literate society and on the hopes and fears awoken by the expansion of the cultural public sphere caused by the proliferation of print. The second part explores the contribution of literature to the shaping of the roles of authors, readers and patrons in the field of literary production.

Book Synopsis Book Presence in a Digital Age by : Kiene Brillenburg Wurth
Download or read book Book Presence in a Digital Age written by Kiene Brillenburg Wurth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to the apocalyptic pronouncements of paper media's imminent demise in the digital age, there has been a veritable surge of creative reimaginings of books as bearers of the literary. From typographic experiments (Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves, Steven Hall's The Raw Shark Texts) to accordion books (Anne Carson's Nox), from cut ups (Jonathan Safran Foer's Tree of Codes) to collages (Graham Rawle's Woman's World), from erasures (Mary Ruefle's A Little White Shadow) to mixups (Simon Morris's The Interpretations of Dreams), print literature has gone through anything but a slow, inevitable death. In fact, it has re-invented itself materially. Starting from this idea of media plurality, Book Presence in a Digital Age explores the resilience of print literatures, book art, and zines in the late age of print from a contemporary perspective, while incorporating longer-term views on media archeology and media change. Even as it focuses on the materiality of books and literary writing in the present, Book Presence also takes into consideration earlier 20th-century "moments" of media transition, developing the concepts of presence and materiality as analytical tools to perform literary criticism in a digital age. Bringing together leading scholars, artists, and publishers, Book Presence in a Digital Age offers a variety of perspectives on the past, present, and future of the book as medium, the complex relationship of materiality to virtuality, and of the analog to the digital.

Book Synopsis Music, Authorship, and the Book in the First Century of Print by : Kate van Orden
Download or read book Music, Authorship, and the Book in the First Century of Print written by Kate van Orden and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to author a piece of music? What transforms the performance scripts written down by musicians into authored books? In this fascinating cultural history of Western musicÕs adaptation to print, Kate van Orden looks at how musical authorship first developed through the medium of printing. When music printing began in the sixteenth century, publication did not always involve the composer: printers used the names of famous composers to market books that might include little or none of their music. Publishing sacred music could be career-building for a composer, while some types of popular song proved too light to support a reputation in print, no matter how quickly they sold. Van Orden addresses the complexities that arose for music and musicians in the burgeoning cultures of print, concluding that authoring books of polyphony gained only uneven cultural traction across a century in which composers were still first and foremost performers.
