Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Negro in North Carolina, And, Some Colonial History of Craven County The most pathetic figure in North Carolina prior to the Civil War was the free negro. Hedged about with social and legal re strictions, he ever remained an anomaly in the social and polit ical life of the State. The origin of this class of people may be attributed to many sources, the most common of which are (1) cohabitation of white women and negro men, (2) intermarriage of blacks and whites, (3) manumission, (4) military service in the Revolution, and (5) immigration from adjoining States. As early as 17232 many free negroes, mulattoes and persons of mixed blood had moved into the Province and had intermarried with the white inhabi tants in contempt of the acts and laws in those cases pro vided. In the year 1715 in order to discourage intermarriage between white women and negro men, a penalty of 50 was imposed upon the' contracting parties, while clergymen and jus tices of peace were forbidden to celebrate such marriage under a like penalty.3 However regrettable it may be, it is certain that there were a few disreputable white women who had illegitimate children by negro men, and such children inherited the legal status of the mother. The laws of 17154 take cognizance of this fact by imposing a penalty on any white woman whether bond or free, who shall have a bastard child by any negro, mulatto or Indian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina Relating to another statement in the Convention of 1850 is the following: The churches of the State are urged to establish schools for the oral instruction of the colored people. In some instances the colored people were allowed to hold services conducted by some member of their own race in some sections and at specified times, but such meetings were usually held under the supervision of a white man, and at his discretion these meetings were brought to a close. In very many instances such meetings were even con ducted by a member of the white race. In matters of discipline, especially if a white member was involved, the colored people had no voice whatever. In matters affecting their own number often some colored brother in whom the church had confidence would make re ports and recommendations. In compliance with the resolution of 1837, which we have already mentioned, in some instances provision was made in the erection of the church edifice by petition, and in the galleries for the accommodation of the colored brethren. In the communion services, after the bread and wine had been passed to the white brethren, it was passed in turn to the colored brethren. This was regarded by them as a God-sent privilege and a blessing, for which their Amens were often loud and lasting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in the State of North Carolina The story of slavery in the State of North Carolina may be considered in two parts, the dividing point of which is the year 1831. Before this year the general conditions of the slave were more humane than after it. Public feeling on the question was then unimpassioned. Some people opposed it; some favored it. It seems to have been discussed in a sane way, as a matter of public policy and without any extraordinary excitement or recrimination. After 1831, or about that year - for no fine and distinct dividing point can properly be made - the conditions of slavery became more severe. One law after another was passed which bore hardly on the slave, until at last he was bound hand, foot, and brain in the power of his master. Moreover, public feeling became inflamed. Slavery could no longer be discussed as a public policy, and there arose with most people in the State a fervent intolerance of all views advanced against the system. The causes of this remarkable development have often been enumerated. Later on in this work I propose to explain the matter with some degree of fulness in a chapter on the development of the pro-slavery sentiment.
