Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which gradually took form in the second millennium under the guidance of the Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by numerous popes. No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary has been recommended more warmly or frequently by the Popes than the Rosary, which has been the favorite, moreover, of such saints as Teresa of Avila, Francis de Sales, Louis de Montfort, Alphonsus Liguori, Bernadette, Pio of Pietrelcina, and many more. The Mystical Rose Tree provides in a very accessible form what several modern Popes, from Leo XIII to Benedict XVI, have had to say about what they had learned about the Rosary, and how each of us Today, and the world as a whole, could profit from such learning and devotion.

The pain is in her heart, that boding pain Left of the sword that Simeon saw, yet now The Babe is on her breast that charms all pain. PART III. MIRACLE OF THE DESERT. Nine days4 in the desert lost, On a sea of sand-waves tost, Quaffed the last sweet drink of water, Down our pilgrims sink and sigh; Down, perchance, to sleep and die; Nay, in weakness He is nigh, He who shields fair Sion's daughter. Lo! His angel-bands appear, And the fainting sleepers near, And the nearest angel sings As he scatters from his hands Golden seed upon the sands, With his wing the plantage fans Till the quickened seed up-springs. Straight another's shining shaft Cleaves the ground unto its haft, Following which the waters rush With a low and murmuring sound, Eddying in a circle round, Form a basin in the ground, Where a-brim the cool waves gush. One plants germs of purple fruit, Whence the sappy vines they shoot; Another makes the bread-tree rjse, Doth the fountain-border sow, Makes the fruited fig-tree grow, And the fragrant orange blow: And still the golden seed it flies. Boungavilla's purple bloom Gives the visioned night perfume, Poinsetta's azure streamers Floating from the cocoa trees, Waving in the wooing breeze, And the bamboo's widening leaves Hedge around the peaceful dreamers. Grasses creep o'er Mary's bed, Lilies flower about her head, Daffodils below her feet, And a stately sandal fair Spreads its odorous branches there, Casts its perfume in her hair, --Babe and mother slumbering sweet. Yet, afar, another plants, And the beauteous palm up-slants, Straight its trunk forms tall and fair, "Neath the breath the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner painted his Archetypal Plant watercolour in 1924, at a time when contemporary scientific methodologies were emerging and nature was being examined under the microscope. In contrast to the dissecting tendencies of natural science, however, Steiner’s painting depicts the living, dynamic potential which stands behind the plant – lifting us out of the specific genus and providing an image of the growing and formative forces inherent within each individual plant. Researching Rudolf Steiner’s painting of the Archetypal Plant can help reconnect our outer sense-perceptions with the inner realm of imaginative cognition, releasing us from the spell of matter. To support and enliven such research work and processes, Angela Lord surveys her subject-matter from various aspects, including the historical, evolutionary relationships we share with plants; the representation of plants in art and architecture; plant myths and legends; poetry inspired by flower imagery; cosmic aspects of nature, including earth’s relationships to the sun, moon, planets and stars; formative, creative forces of colours and their relationships to plant forms; and finally, working artistically and painting the Archetypal Plant motif itself. In developing a broad overview, the author forms a deeper, more complete picture of the plant world, paying homage to its diverse characteristics, and stimulating new perceptions and perspectives. This book is richly illustrated with full-colour images.

The Tree of Life is an analysis of this form and compares it to the operations of the intellect. These operations are the process by which we come to know what is. It also corresponds to the metaphysical elements, which are the core of our being. What becomes evident is that there is a form to human consciousness.

Book excerpt: A beautiful novel about the fragility of memory, Mystical Rose is the carefully paced monologue of a woman in her late eighties with a disordered mind. Now on her deathbed under the constant care of doctors and nurses, Rose is having a one-sided conversation with God. Delving into her past, she revisits herself growing up in Cobourg, Ontario in the twenties. When her father returns from WWI an empty shell of his former self, she helps the family by going into service as a maid. Before long, she finds herself married to the scion of the wealthy family she works for, and transported into a world she doesn't understand; life becomes even more difficult when he meets a terrible early death. Through Scrimger's lyrical, precise prose and haunting images, Rose is revealed as a woman never quite in control of her own destiny, still trying to understand her own life. To Rose, her mind ravaged by senile dementia, the events of six decades ago are just as immediate as those of yesterday. As the Globe and Mail said: "Rose isn't sure why everyone is so upset with her and can't understand what she's saying, thinking, seeing." She drifts from crystal-clear recollections of her past, to confusion in the present as she attempts to interact with hospital staff and her daughter Harriet, whom she fears she never loved well enough. She forgets words and misuses them -- and yet, having worked in a flower shop for years, she still remembers the meaning of every flower's name. Scrimger says: "Mystical Rose started from a picture I had of an old lady talking to God on her deathbed in a hospital. From there I began researching Alzheimer's Disease." This short novel, then, is written as a subtle montage of experiences, a style which Scrimger says is suited to the way our minds work today, with the influences of film and television. "I think more like a filmmaker, using quick cuts. Our eyes are more attuned to video games and Much Music; it has affected the way our minds think. You can't write like Dickens and Melville used to." Mystical Rose was his first novel in four years; excerpts were published as he was writing it in the Ottawa Citizen. The book is sad, but as with Scrimger's previous novel Crosstown "There's comedy in places you wouldn't normally expect to find comedy."

Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.
