The next three messages are a continuation of messages given in the full-time training in Anaheim in the fall of 1997 concerning the grafted life. These messages begin to unveil the relationship between the grafted life and God’s organic salvation. Message Seven unfolds the matters of regeneration and sanctification. Regeneration is to bring God into man, to have God as life in addition to our original, human life. Sanctification is to be saturated with God organically; sanctification is for God’s “sonizing”; that is, sanctification is for sonship. Message Eight presents the matters of renewing and transformation. As believers we must be thoroughly and absolutely renewed so that we may be the new creation of God and for God. To be renewed is to have God’s element added into our being to replace and discharge our old element. Transformation as the issue of renewing is not an outward change or correction, but it is a spiritual metabolism; it is the metabolic function of the life of God in the believers. Message Nine shows us that conformation denotes the shaping of life; as the divine life grows within us and transforms us, it spontaneously shapes us into the form, the image, of the firstborn Son of God. Glorification, however, is the step in God’s complete salvation in which God will completely saturate our body with the glory of His life and nature. Lastly, we include letters concerning the Lord’s move in the Pacific Islands and Romania.

This message emphasizes the principles of the home meetings, which are that everyone speaks, no one assumes the headship, and every home has a meeting. The Lord’s leading among all the churches in His recovery today is that we rid ourselves of the way of organization, control, arrangement, and fund-raising. We must care only for three precious things—the Lord’s life, His Spirit, and His word—in the home meetings. The home meetings are the foundation of the church. The co-workers, elders, and serving saints must see this burden and respond with a change of concept and with much and adequate prayer. In addition, they must be apt to teach the truth in a living and fresh way and bring the saints into the truth. The three messages that follow are from the Thanksgiving Conference held in Anaheim in November 1998 concerning the principles of the Body. The first message stresses the vision of the Body of Christ. To see the Body of Christ is to enter into the reality of the Body of Christ. We need revelation to know the reality of the Body of Christ and to usher us into the realm of the Body, and only then will the Body of Christ become our experience. The second message presents the following three principles of the Body: the Body is one, the Body is altogether a matter of life, and the Body is Christ. The third message gives another five principles concerning the Body of Christ: the function of the Body is to express Christ, the reality of the Body is a group of God’s redeemed who have been made God in life and nature but not in the Godhead, the Body is in the resurrection life of Christ, the Body is a new creation, and the Body is the consummation of the work of the cross. Lastly, we include two reports. The first is a report from the former Soviet Union concerning the elders’ and co-workers’ training and the semi-annual two-week training; the second is an update concerning the use of the facilities on the campus for the ministry in Anaheim, California.

In this message Brother Lee points out that as soon as we contact someone, we should bring the meetings to his home. In the Lord’s recovery, this practice should be the fundamental factor in building up the church. We must also use the Lord’s word to teach one another in the home meetings. To this end, the serving ones in the meetings must carefully select the proper material for the home meetings. This is an absolute necessity and is in the principle of giving the household food at the proper time (Matt. 24:45). Then the serving ones should make it their job not to expound the reading materials but to direct everyone to focus on the main points. The key to the success of the new way is the spiritual material we use in the home meetings and the way we teach the Truth Lessons. The following three messages are the conclusion of the Thanksgiving Conference held in Anaheim in November 1998 concerning the principles of the Body. Message Four presents four more principles of the Body, including knowing the authority of Christ the Head, genuine spirituality being a matter of the Body, caring for the feeling and peace of the Body, and having the consciousness of the Body. Message Five stresses the crucial fact that the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ is poured out upon the Body. The subject of this series of messages is "Propagating the Resurrected, Ascended, and All-inclusive Christ as the Development of the Kingdom of God." We are propagating a person—the resurrected, ascended, and all-inclusive Christ, who is emphatically revealed in the book of Acts. To propagate Christ is not merely to spread the truth concerning Him; it is actually to reproduce Him, just as a husband and wife propagate by bringing forth children who are the same as they are in life and nature. Today we are the reproductions, the increase, of the resurrected Christ as the firstborn Son of God. The propagation of Christ can be carried out only by His witnesses, by those who have seen Him. In the book of Acts the Lord charged His disciples to be His witnesses. In the New Testament the meaning of witness is primarily to bear a living testimony of Jesus Christ in His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. We need to live by the divine life in our human life so that we would be witnesses, those who bear a living testimony of the resurrected and ascended Christ in our human life. Through death Christ entered into another realm, the realm of resurrection. The reality of resurrection is the all-inclusive life-giving Spirit. Thus, the realm of resurrection is the realm of the Spirit, which is also the divine and mystical realm. We all have been begotten, regenerated, in Christ's resurrection, and we all have been ushered into the same realm. Moreover, the church is in this realm; the church exists in the realm of resurrection. Christ's resurrection was the focus of the apostles' testimony. The Lord's ascension was His initiation into His living and ministry in the heavens; this initiation brought Him into a new realm, that is, into the heavens where He now has His living and is ministering there. Whereas resurrection is a matter of life, Christ's ascension is a matter of position, and position is a matter of authority. The resurrected Christ is in the heavens executing God's administration. The resurrected Christ ascended to the heavens to be exalted by God and to be given the kingship, the lordship, and the headship over all things. The ascended Christ has also obtained the throne, the glory, and all the authority in the universe. The ascended Christ is God's Anointed to carry out God's commission to work out the spreading of the gospel and the building up of the church. The Christ revealed in Acts is the all-inclusive Christ. He is the Author of life, God's Servant, the Leader and Savior, the Son of Man, God, the Lord of all, the Judge, and the object of the believers' faith. The resurrected, ascended, and all-inclusive Christ whom we are propagating is the kingdom, and we are propagating Him as the development of the kingdom. The development of the kingdom of God, that is, the kingdom of the divine life, is the spreading of Christ as life into His believers to form a realm in which God rules in His life. The kingdom of God is the main subject of the apostles' preaching in Acts; this is indicated by the fact that the resurrected Christ, in His appearing to the apostles through a period of forty days, spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is the Savior as the seed of life sown into His believers, God's chosen people, and developing into a realm over which God can rule as His kingdom in His divine life. The entrance into the kingdom of God is regeneration, and the development of the kingdom is the believers' growth in the divine life. The kingdom of God is the church life today, in which the faithful believers live, and it will develop into the coming kingdom as a reward to be inherited by the overcoming saints in the millennium. Eventually, the kingdom of God will consummate in the New Jerusalem as the eternal kingdom of God, an eternal realm of the eternal blessing of God's eternal life, which all of God's redeemed will enjoy in the new heaven and new earth for eternity. What kind of Christ can be reproduced through us depends on what He is to us in reality. If we know Him as resurrection and the power of resurrection and if we know Him in His heavenly ministry with His supreme authority, realizing that He is the center of God's governmental administration in the universe, we will announce and propagate this kind of Christ. If we realize, know, experience, and enjoy the all-inclusive Christ, spontaneously this Christ will be reproduced through us. The general subject of this series of messages is "The Recovery of the Church." The intrinsic significance of the church is the corporate expression of Christ, who is the embodiment and expression of the Triune God. The reality of the church as the expression of Christ is heavenly, "Christly," and "resurrectionly." In time and space, however, the church can deviate and become degraded, deformed, and corrupted due to the enemy's work of producing substitutes for Christ, dividing the Body of Christ, and killing the function of the members of the Body of Christ. From the beginning, God's intention was to have the church, and this was taught by the apostles (Eph. 3:10-11). Although much of the truth concerning the church has been lost or distorted, our God is a God of recovery regardless of what the enemy has done. The Lord's recovery of the church brings us back to the beginning for the fulfillment of God's eternal purpose and original intention regarding the church. For the recovery of the church, we need to overcome the degradation of the church that was brought in according to the principle of Babylon--exercising human ability and effort, hypocrisy, self-glorification, and harlotry. The way to overcome the principle of Babylon is to take Christ as our burnt offering so that He can repeat the life of the burnt offering within us. By this way we can be "Christified" and become His duplication for the building up of the Body of Christ to consummate the holy city, New Jerusalem. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah record the return of the Israelites from Babylon to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and the city. This return signifies the Lord's recovery of a remnant out of today's division and confusion back to the original ground of oneness for the building up of the genuine church as the house of God and the kingdom of God. To strengthen and enrich the recovery of the church, the Lord needs priestly scribes like Ezra--those who contact God, are saturated with God, and are skillful in the Word of God to reeducate and reconstitute God's people for His testimony and His corporate expression on the earth. The Lord also needs those who are pure and properly aggressive like Nehemiah to build the great and high wall of the holy city for our separation unto God, the protection of God's interests, and the expression of God. Practically speaking, in the Lord's recovery today, we are mainly recovering the proper church life and the proper living of the church. The church life is the corporate living of the perfected God-men, a living in the reality of the Body of Christ. The church life is the life of Christ being lived out through His members in a corporate way. It is our being headed up under the unique headship of Christ and enjoying the mutual flowing of fellowship in oneness as the continuation of Christ's being glorified by the Father so that we may be the corporate expression of Christ. In order for the Lord to return, He must recover the life and living of the church. The church has two main aspects--universal and local. The church is constituted of the universal God, but it exists on earth in many localities; in nature the church is universal in God, but in practice the church is local, in a definite place. Without the universal aspect, the church is void of content; without the local aspect, it is impossible for the church to have any expression and practice. The genuine oneness is the Triune God who as the Spirit today is being added to us and is permeating us, taking us over, and filling us. Only the Triune God is the factor of the genuine oneness. The ground of oneness is simply the processed Triune God applied to our being. In Psalm 133 the fine oil, referring to the holy anointing oil in Exodus 30:23-33, signifies the all-inclusive compound Spirit. This anointing Spirit is the element of our oneness; when the compound Spirit applies Himself to us and spreads over and in our entire being in a gradual way, He makes us genuinely one. If we want to have the recovery of the church, we must have a clear revelation concerning the three most basic, essential, and crucial statuses of the church--as the Body of Christ, as the new man, and as the counterpart of Christ. The Body is the issue of the headship of Christ. Christ, as the One who fills all in all, needs His Body to be His fullness, the expression of the Head (cf. Eph. 1:22-23). For the building up of the Body of Christ, we need to practice the scriptural way to meet and to serve--the God-ordained way revealed in the holy Word. The new man is Christ in all the saints. This indwelling Christ permeates and replaces us to remove all natural distinctions and to constitute everyone with Himself. In order for us to experience the reality of Christ being all the members of the new man, we need to take Christ as our life and our person and live Him, not ourselves. The one new man fulfills God's eternal purpose of expressing God and dealing with His enemy. The church as the Body of Christ and the one new man will become the bride, the counterpart, of Christ. The Lord will return for His bride. The church, the counterpart of Christ, as typified by Eve, is a pure product out of Christ, built out of the uncreated life released by Christ through His death and resurrection. Only those who are regenerated of Christ and who live by Christ as the church can match Christ and complement Him. In the New Jerusalem the processed and consummated redeeming Triune God as the universal Husband will live a married life for eternity with this redeemed, regenerated, transformed, and glorified corporate person as His wife. This will be the consummation of the universal divine romance. The general subject of this series of messages is "Returning to the Orthodoxy of the Church." We urgently need to come back to the orthodoxy of the apostolic church. The orthodoxy of the church is the church according to the teaching and practice of the apostles. What is orthodox is the New Testament apostles' vision, revelation, teaching, practice, direction, and ministry. In the mid 1940s Watchman Nee gave the messages published in The Orthodoxy of the Church. In the preface to the English edition, Witness Lee writes, "What we urgently need today is to come back to the orthodoxy of the beginning and stand firmly on the ground of locality" (The Collected Works of Watchman Nee, vol. 47, p. 6). In The Orthodoxy of the Church Watchman Nee is one with the Lord to identify what is not normal and what is degradation; he also identifies what is the orthodoxy of the church--the apostolic church as revealed in the New Testament. In this issue we will see from Revelation 2 and 3 that only the church in Philadelphia returned to the orthodoxy of the church. We may already have some knowledge about this subject. However, we need to be in fear and trembling lest we would have confidence in our knowledge and understanding and think that there is nothing new to see, gain, or experience. To have such an attitude is to have the spirit of the Laodiceans, who boasted and said, "I am wealthy and have become rich and have need of nothing" (Rev. 3:17). In principle, the elders and responsible brothers are the messengers representing the church, are responsible for the church, have a heart to care for the church, and recognize that they are under the Lord's direct authority concerning the church. The Spirit speaks to the churches; the Son of Man, however, speaks to the messengers. The entire book of Revelation is the revelation of the person of Jesus Christ and not the revelation of locusts, beasts, or so many other things. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ, through Jesus Christ, and concerning Jesus Christ. If we [4] are to return to the orthodoxy of the church, we cannot merely return to teachings and practices; we must return by way of the person, Jesus Christ, the One who knows the situation of every local church and of every messenger of every local church. If we have an increasing vision of what is most on God's heart for His eternal satisfaction--the bride, the wife, the New Jerusalem--we will be beside ourselves in the Spirit. In the first three chapters of Revelation we can see how the Lord cares for the churches. Even in His awesome majesty, He must judge them in order to gain them. In the final two chapters the Lord Jesus sent His angel for the particular purpose that all His dear churches would see the final vision (cf. 22:16). From the beginning to the end, the Lord cares for the churches. This word should at least give us a heart to see what John saw and to treasure and care for it. In this message, Brother Lee provides some of the details concerning the practice of the home meetings and small group meetings. In laboring to care for the home meetings, we must learn to minister God’s word at every opportune time, giving “injections” to fight the adverse environments and to supply nutrition in order for the saints to grow. When we labor diligently with perseverance to speak the Lord’s word and care for the meetings in the homes, His Spirit will follow our labor and our words with His work, and there will surely be positive results. The next three messages are a continuation of messages given in the full-time training in Anaheim in the fall of 1997 concerning the grafted life. Message Four presents how God created man in such a way that he would be similar to Him in life so that based upon this similarity he could become intrinsically one with Him. Message Five stresses the fact that God’s judicial redemption is the glorious procedure by which and through which we were grafted into Christ through believing into Him. Message Six gives a further word concerning the matter of God’s judicial redemption for our experience of God’s organic salvation in the grafted life. In the following section we include a portion of the memorial meeting for our beloved Brother Howard Higashi, who was unexpectedly taken away to be with the Lord on November 27, 1998. A message is also included which was given by Brother Howard in the full-time training in Anaheim concerning the gospel, in which he shares his own testimony of receiving the Lord. Our dear Brother Howard was a faithful worker, a steadfast pursuer, and a fervent lover of Christ from the beginning of his salvation in the Lord’s recovery thirty years ago until his going to be with the Lord. He is one of the Lord’s overcomers in this present age. Last of all, we include reports concerning the Lord’s move in Europe and in the southern Philippines.

Book excerpt: In this issue of The Ministry, Brother Lee gives a word of encouragement and exhortation to the elders and co-workers in Taipei concerning the practice of the new way, reminding them to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). As he reviews and previews the Lord’s move in the new way, he points out that the practice to realize our glorious future is a matter of building up the home meetings and the truth-teaching meetings, actively visiting the new urban communities, and building up a strong testimony on all the campuses. Moreover, in order to pick up the burden and to spread the work aggressively, there is the need to match God’s move with our material supply. For all this, we must be like those in Judges 5 who made “great resolutions in heart” and “great searchings of heart” (vv. 15-16). We must achieve something for the Lord, never burying the grace that the Lord has given us or the gains that our training has brought us. The next three messages in this issue are a continuation of the Crystallization-study of the Epistle to the Hebrews and were given in the winter training of 1998. Message Sixteen stresses the fact that Christ is the reality of the new testament, the reality of all that God is and of all that God has given to us; therefore, Christ is the new testament. Message Seventeen shows us how the law of the divine life is the spontaneous power of the divine life; it is the natural characteristic and the innate, automatic function of the divine life. Message Eighteen presents the crucial experience of Christ shown at the incense altar within the tabernacle; it is by the prayer at the incense altar that we participate in Christ’s interceding life as the center of the divine administration. Last of all, we include the many reports of the Lord’s move throughout the earth given by a number of brothers at the Spring 1999 International Training of Elders and Responsible Ones in Ventura, California.
