Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s amazing how dominant information is in the modern world. In fact, it’s so dominant that it begs the question, “What if information does not only define and shape our world—what if it is in fact reality”? The 1999 film The Matrix and its sequels were predicated on just this idea. Of late, the sultans of Silicon Valley have become obsessed with this idea, which is known as the simulation hypothesis. Elon Musk himself has remarked, “There’s a billion-to-one chance we’re living in base reality.” Perhaps information doesn’t just define and shape our reality. Perhaps it’s entangled in the fabric of reality through the mind of the observer. Consider the philosophical thought experiment: if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? It takes a mind to experience reality. In this book, I chronicle the journey that led me to discover the missing link between science and spirituality: the information-bit. Legendary theoretical physicist John Wheeler’s “it-from-bit” theory and my own Quantum Mind model are ultimately rooted in the same thing: data. Wheeler suggested that the reality of physics —the “it”—is based on patterns of information, or “bits.” I theorize that our actions in the real world unfold in sync with the underlying information-thought blueprints that exist in our mind. Buddha once said, “The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” This bi-directional dialogue across the mind–body connection may well occur at the Planck scale, where the transition between quantum physics—the bit—and classical physics—the it—operates. But where do the mind and body meet? Purpose, which emerges from knowing oneself, unifies the wisdom of the East with the pragmatism of the West. The energy derived from what has meaning to the self is the fuel that allows individuals to manifest in the physical reality (via the body) the bit arrangement contained in the micro realm of their mind. If its point of origin is love, this route leads to inner peace and harmony and draws a vector unifying the mind, heart, and body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-University Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Film Science, grade: 14,0, course: technological progress and ethics, language: English, abstract: Is is only in the last decades of the twentieth century that technology gained an important place in western society, and its development is flourishing up to the present day. Due to the rapid progress of high-tech computers and information technology the standard of living improved, and full scope can be given to our creativity, for mechanical tasks are now fulfiled by the machines. The Technological Revolution has aroused several expectations and fantasies. The seemingly utopistic idea of artificial intelligence which has moved human beings since the antiquity appeared by the midth of the twentieth century more than ever realistic. Such a promising future vision has otherwise led to anxiety and fear. What if we will, striving after power, lose it completely and get ourselves into bondage? These thoughts gave birth to anti-utopian fiction where the worst of the fears are brought into reality - intelligent machines created by human beings have made people to their slaves and rule on Earth.

Book excerpt: The Matrix trilogy is unique among recent popular films in that it is constructed around important philosophical questions--classic questions which have fascinated philosophers and other thinkers for thousands of years. Editor Christopher Grau here presents a collection of new, intriguing essays about some of the powerful and ancient questions broached by The Matrix and its sequels, written by some of the most prominent and reputable philosophers working today. They provide intelligent, accessible, and thought-provoking examinations of the philosophical issues that support the films. Philosophers Explore The Matrix includes an introduction that surveys the use of philosophical ideas in the film. Topics that the contributors tackle include: how a collaborative dream could differ from hallucination, the difference between the Matrix and the "real" world; why living in the Matrix would be considered "bad"; the similarities between the Matrix and Plato's Cave; the moral status of artificially created beings, whether one can behave immorally in illusory circumstances, and the true nature of free will and responsibility. This volume also includes an appendix of classic philosophical writing on these issues by Plato, Berkeley, Descartes, Putnam, and Nozick. Philosophers Explore The Matrix will fascinate any fan of the films who wants to delve deeper into their themes, as well as any student of philosophy who desires an accessible entry into this challenging and profoundly vital world of ideas.

He delves into the deepest dreams and perennial tensions in American culture: wealth and poverty, race relations, moral aloneness, the superhero and the solo redeemer, violence and war, the mythical West, relations of the sexes, and fears of the future. These portrayals in turn launch him into the chief themes and mythic elements in the New Testament. In the conversation and mutual criticism that his book engenders, Scott clarifies the values that contemporary culture and the Bible might bring to each other [Publisher description].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix analysis of structures is a vital subject to every structural analyst, whether working in aero-astro, civil, or mechanical engineering. It provides a comprehensive approach to the analysis of a wide variety of structural types, and therefore offers a major advantage over traditional metho~ which often differ for each type of structure. The matrix approach also provides an efficient means of describing various steps in the analysis and is easily programmed for digital computers. Use of matrices is natural when performing calculations with a digital computer, because matrices permit large groups of numbers to be manipulated in a simple and effective manner. This book, now in its third edition, was written for both college students and engineers in industry. It serves as a textbook for courses at either the senior or first-year graduate level, and it also provides a permanent reference for practicing engineers. The book explains both the theory and the practical implementation of matrix methods of structural analysis. Emphasis is placed on developing a physical understanding of the theory and the ability to use computer programs for performing structural calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lana and Lilly Wachowski have redefined the technically and topically possible while joyfully defying audience expectations. Visionary films like The Matrix trilogy and Cloud Atlas have made them the world's most influential transgender media producers, and their coming out retroactively put trans* aesthetics at the very center of popular American culture. Cáel M. Keegan views the Wachowskis' films as an approach to trans* experience that maps a transgender journey and the promise we might learn "to sense beyond the limits of the given world." Keegan reveals how the filmmakers take up the relationship between identity and coding (be it computers or genes), inheritance and belonging, and how transgender becoming connects to a utopian vision of a post-racial order. Along the way, he theorizes a trans* aesthetic that explores the plasticity of cinema to create new social worlds, new temporalities, and new sensory inputs and outputs. Film comes to disrupt, rearrange, and evolve the cinematic exchange with the senses in the same manner that trans* disrupts, rearranges, and evolves discrete genders and sexes.
