Book excerpt: Creating a presence-based approach to healing With Healing Presence, author David J. Shuch has written an impressive and groundbreaking guide to the theory and practice of healing in its many aspects. He proposes the idea that we need to re-examine and redefine what it means to be a healer and attempts to answer the following questions: What is consciousness? What is human life? What is healing? What is the science behind the art of healing? What practices and what capacities are needed so that one may be rooted in the face of suffering and helpful in fostering an atmosphere of healing? You will be motivated to reflect upon and question your own views as you study the book’s teachings. Masterfully weaving together concepts from history, religion, science, and more, the author has created a unique theory of faith, consciousness, and humanity.

Book excerpt: The Gospel of Mark is generally accepted as the earliest of the four accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus. Central to Mark's portrait of Jesus is an emphasis on his healing presence among the people of God - a sign of the living and active presence of God, offering not only physical healing but completeness and restoration of spirit in the midst of brokenness and pain. For Mark, this is the God revealed by Jesus in his public ministry: a God driven by an obsessive persistence to reach out to people in healing, sustenance and companionship. One of the ways we learn from the long teaching tradition of our church is by listening and sharing the Scriptures, broken for us each Sunday at Mass, offered to us by faithful preaching of the Word of God or by thoughtful reflection in classroom and other settings. The task of preachers, teachers and commentators is somehow to bring the selected readings to life so that they connect with our lives as we gather to worship, to listen, to be strengthened and encouraged in our life of faith week by week. This new series of reflections on the Sunday Gospels in the year of Mark are not concerned primarily to be a commentary on the text but on the message of the text; their purpose is not so much to inform as to inspire. The reflections by a master craftsman are written to unpack the Gospel - not simply Mark's special theological emphases but his teaching about how we are to live with one another in the stuff of the everyday. Integral to the book is the author's assumption that life and faith belong together; that God, the source of life and wholeness in our lives, is lavish with gifts to us, patient and energising for completion and healing, for life in its fullness. Here is a book that takes seriously the response of Jesus to those who cry out to him in faith for his healing presence and who look for that on going presence in his community that is called the church. The book is for priests and preachers, parents and teachers, and for all of us who seek the transformation and fullness of life that God offers us in the breaking of the Word and who have the courage and the wisdom to accept the challenges of the Word and incarnate its message in our daily lives. Peter Varengo is a Salesian priest presently engaged in full time Adult Retreat Ministry. He studied Theology at the Salesian University in Rome; and Religious Education in Maynooth (Ireland) and in Boston College (USA). He has taught at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne and been involved in parish ministry for many years.

Book excerpt: This book is written in a theistic context; that, I believe God is in control. It is not an easy proposition to intelligent, technical and scientifically thinking AI Robotic brains. Existence itself is the Love-Truth that infill and surrounds all that exist, It is The all-inclusive - ‘IS’. Existence itself is a present- continuous-ongoing-event that can only be represented by ‘IS’ or the present-continuous- state-of-being. The idea of meta-love counseling or ‘beyond’ counseling is, being-in-the- moment-that-reveals-itself to the one who is ready in sensitive alertness to receive whatever IS. This book maintains that none is entitled to alter the perpetual ‘IS” The ‘Counselor’ as Jesus meant will lead you into situations that redeem and heal. The idea is very simple. In that particular state-of-being the counselor whom we refer to as the Christian-Meta-Love –Counselor or a Healing Presence, functions as a conduit of healing in the confused, suffering, broken, desperate, defeated, self-centered, unforgiving individuals to gain freedom from their private bondage to experience Healing. It is not as much as what the Meta-Love-Counselor does but who she or he is within the glorious presence of Jesus who in fills the Meta-love-counselor to function as an agent of the healing in and through the Meta-love-counselor only acts as a channel of healing. The Holy Spirit; source of all comfort and healing begins flowing to the person in need, through you, who functions as a genuine conduit for the happening, healing process. The dynamics of such happenings is not explainable technically; as it is there for anyone in the Spirit to experience it and for those outside it to reject outright. Without love, the counselee will only be influenced to believe everything is fine. Love-Truth makes all things possible including all comforting, healing and wholeness. Surrounded by Love-Truth, all things become possible. Surrender in Love-Truth to sense the magic of love.

Book excerpt: Jesus is still He who heals both soul and body. Salvation offers holiness and healing, and the Holy Spirit is willing to give us a manifestation of His power. When we ask why this divine power is not more often seen, the only biblical answer to be found is: “Because of your unbelief.” Health as well as salvation is to be obtained by faith. The natural tendency of man is to bring about his salvation by his works, and it is only with difficulty that he comes to receive it by faith. But when it is a question of healing the body, he has still more difficulty grasping that truth. As to salvation, he finally accepts it because there is no other way to open the door of heaven. But for the body, he makes use of many other treatments. But happy is he who understands that it is the will of God to show the power of Jesus and to reveal to us His Fatherly love by healing physically as well as spiritually. By doing so, He increases and confirms our faith and teaches us that He demonstrates the power of redemption in the body as well as in the soul. This book provides biblical clarity concerning divine healing, and supplies basic and applicable principles necessary to having faith concerning healing. The author makes it very clear that we are not healed based on who we are, but based on who Christ is.

Book excerpt: The Healing Therapies Bible profiles more than 50 therapies, explaining the principles on which they are based, their history in practice, and wherever possible, shows them in action. New healing techniques are now being taught all over the world. Some are associated with a particular healer, such as Brandon Bays' The Journey and Vianna Stibal's Theta Healing. Others respond to our spiritual ascension, such as crystal healing with new-generation, high-vibration crystals and flower remedies. Some have longer histories, and have evolved from a wealth of traditions - such as Mindfulness meditation, with its roots in Buddhism and western stress reduction techniques, and regression therapy, more recently popularized by Harvard Psychiatry Professor Dr Brian Weiss. Also included are the classic techniques of complementary therapists, such as massage, reiki, reflexology and aromatherapy.
