Book Synopsis From Latin to Portuguese by : Edwin B. Williams
Download or read book From Latin to Portuguese written by Edwin B. Williams and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely recognized as the standard work in its field, this volume traces in systematic form the history of the development of the sounds and forms of the Portuguese language from its Latin beginnings. Based upon years of research and painstaking consideration of all the significant publications on the subject, it clarifies a great deal that has been obscure in the transition from Latin to Old Portuguese, to modern Portuguese, and to Brazilian Portuguese. It also helps resolve many of the complex problems of Spanish and general Romance philology. For the second edition of From Latin to Portuguese, the author, Edwin B. Williams, has made substantial additions and revisions, has brought the bibliography up to date, and has utilized the latest research to reevaluate and confirm his original conclusions. In the light of these adjustments and the new material made available by Williams, this extraordinary synthesis must be classified as an indispensable handbook for the student and scholar working in the areas of Portuguese, Hispanic, and Romance philology.
Book Synopsis The Lost Library of the King of Portugal by : Angela Delaforce

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction on the morning of All Saints Day 1755 of the heart of the city of Lisbon by an earthquake, tidal wave and the urban fires that followed was a tragedy that divides the 18th century in Portugal. One casualty on that fatal morning was the Royal Library, one of the most magnificent libraries in Europe at the time. The Lost Library of the King of Portugal tells the story of the lost library - its creation, collection and significance. This documented study describes the creation of the library, its cultural significance in 18th-century Portugal, the acquisition of single volumes as well as entire libraries from across Europe and the role in this of Portugal's most talented diplomats. It include the collection of manuscripts from the celebrated library of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland and the unpublished correspondence that was exchanged during the negotiations between London and Lisbon. Throughout his reign, the devout Dom Joäao V set out to conjure up his own vision of Rome and the papal court he never saw. Two chapters are devoted to Italy - one to the talented archaeologist Francesco Bianchini at the papal court, including the unpublished correspondence between him and his royal patron Dom Joäao V, as well as the guides to Rome and art and architecture at the ducal courts of northern Italy, both commissioned by the king.

Book Synopsis Distance and Documents at the Spanish Empire's Periphery by : Sylvia Sellers-García
Download or read book Distance and Documents at the Spanish Empire's Periphery written by Sylvia Sellers-García and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Empire is famous for being, at its height, the realm upon which "the sun never set." It stretched from the Philippines to Europe by way of the Americas. And yet we know relatively little about how Spain managed to move that crucial currency of governance—paper—over such enormous distances. Moreover, we know even less about how those distances were perceived and understood by people living in the empire. This book takes up these unknowns and proposes that by examining how documents operated in the Spanish empire, we can better understand how the empire was built and, most importantly, how knowledge was created. The author argues that even in such a vast realm, knowledge was built locally by people who existed at the peripheries of empire. Organized along routes and centralized into local nodes, peripheral knowledge accumulated in regional centers before moving on to the heart of the empire in Spain. The study takes the Kingdom of Guatemala as its departure point and examines the related aspects of documents and distance in three sections: part one looks at document genre, and how the creation of documents was shaped by distance; part two looks at the movement of documents and the workings of the mail system; part three looks at document storage and how archives played an essential part in the flow of paper.
