Book Synopsis Manual of Excellent Man by : Ledi Sayadaw
Download or read book Manual of Excellent Man written by Ledi Sayadaw and published by Buddhist Publication Society. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the great Burmese philosopher-monk, Ledi Sayadaw, covers the paramis practised by a Bodhisatta, the five aggregates, the Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, and Nibbana. An inspiring and intellectually astute work, geared to the practice of insight meditation. It was written in response to a letter from a lay follower posing ten questions on important points of Buddhist teaching. The work begins with an explanation of the Theravada conception of the Bodhisatta, the aspirant to supreme Buddhahood, and of the ten perfections a Bodhisatta must fulfil to reach Perfect Enlightenment. The author then launches out into a detailed exploration of the “five aggregates” that make up human existence. He also gives coverage to the Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, the five kinds of Maras, and the nature of Nibbana. Again and again, the Sayadaw impresses on his readers the need to take up the practice of the Dhamma in full earnestness, not remaining content with mere deeds of merit but striving along the path of insight meditation that leads to realization of the goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a great many books on Buddhism have been published in recent years, very few focus on the essential teachings and core beliefs of Western Buddhism today, even as it is taking shape in its new context before our eyes. This guidebook provides concise explanations of such basic concepts as the Five Precepts, the Four Noble Truths, the Five Aggregates, the Hindrances, and Dependent Origination along with notes and suggestions for their application. Buddhism is a vast and complex religious tradition that has evolved over the past 2500 years from a dozen or so core (radical) teachings of a man living in northern India called the Buddha. This book explores the common threads and contours that inform today's Buddhism; it is a guidebook for a better life and better world.

Book excerpt: Knowing that reliable information on the practice of insight meditation was much needed by practitioners in the West, the renowned Burmese master Ledi Sayadaw wrote the The Manual of Insight. He covers many topics, such as the distortions of perceptions, the Noble Truths, the higher knowledges, Nibbana, and others, fully expounded and furnished with brief descriptions, some of which are drawn from the Pali texts, while others are the product of Ledi Sayadaw's own teachings. The second manual, The Noble Eightfold Path and Its Factors Explained, was written by the Ven. Ledi Sayadaw in Burmese and later translated into English by U Saw Tun Teik. It contains all the path-factors clearly explained by the venerable author who, as a senior member of the Sangha (Order) in Burma, was both deeply learned and well-practiced in meditation.
Download or read book Essence of Ambrosia written by Taranatha and published by Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essence of Ambrosia is a guide to Buddhist meditation, composed by the prolific and eclectic Tibetan scholar and practitioner Taranatha (1575-1634). Following the lead of Atisha, Taranatha expounds a graduated approach (known as lam rim) to cognitive and meditative development designed to address the needs of three types of person: the person of lesser, average and greater capacity. Taranatha's innovative contribution to this genre is to instruct the student in "contemplation sessions", that specifically guide a beginning Buddhist practitioner through the traditional practices of meditation, beginning with devotional reflection up to the apex of Buddhist meditation, insight (vipassana) meditation. The result is a remarkably accessible and concise insider's guide to the Mahayana Buddhist path.
