Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not being satisfied with the interpretation offered by Sankara and his followers, or some other teachers the author has attempted in the following pages to present to the readers his own interpretation of the work as he has understood it. But in no way does he claim that his interpretation is the interpretation, i.e., the interpretation intended by Gaudapada himself. In the present volume the author has given a new edition of the text of the Agamasastra based on a number of MSS and different editions, followed by an English translation. After this comes his annotation. At the end there are Appendixes including the text and English translation of the Mandukya Upanisad, VAriants of the MSS used for the edition of the text of the Agamasastra, and different indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Johnston's classic translation and commentary on one of the most profound of ancient sacred texts. The book also contains three introductory articles by Johnston, which shed much light on the Upanishads, their place in history, their influence and connection to other spiritual philosophies of the world. "The shortest of all the older Upanishads is the Mandukya. Yet in some ways it contains fuller and deeper teaching than any other of these wonderful treatises of the Mysteries. For the theme of the Mandukya is the four degrees of consciousness, the Natural, the Psychical, the Spiritual, and the Divine, which make up the whole range of life, both manifested and unmanifested. Every word of this Upanishad is brimful of history, brimful of thought. . . . "A single principle links together the great Upanishads and their diverse parts, like jewels strung on a golden thread: the oneness of the Soul and the Oversoul. When we have found the Soul, our inmost real Self, we have thereby found the Oversoul, the Supreme Self of all Being. This is the goal."-Charles Johnston

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two main reasons for abridgement of the Mandukya Upanishad are Amusmika and Ahika. Amushmikamu: What has been well planted with the people regardless of religion is that if there is righteous conduct in this life, enlightenment will come in the next life. Even religious leaders encourage this. Due to this, the common people are turning around the religious leaders. The Kathopanishad says that he or she will become Brahma here and now, not yonder days. The Mandukya Upanishad describes the details of the tools for that. Goudapada karika (Translation) is not in overview, with the common man in mind. Advaita is to knock on the door of the common man but not teaching Advaita. Upanishads are not religious texts. Upanishads reveal methods and lead the way. Aheekamu: Suicides are high especially among farmers and students. 2 Some committed suicide because their parents were angry because they failed the exam and scolded them for watching TV. There are many farmers who have committed suicide because they are in debt. The main reason is loss of selfconfidence. Then Ambedkar opined that reservations should be for ten years and then removed. Why is it still going on? Reservations apart from removing them, common people are being turned into beggars with freebies. Takers are beggars no matter how they take. The common man is being crippled with these kinds of incentives. Common people are acting as if it is enough to get free bies even it is form dead bride man. But they are losing more than that. Because the right to question is lost. Spiritual practice is very helpful in removing these types of weaknesses, create consciousness. There will be a great change in the common man. It is not only good for the individual but also for 3 the nation. It is for this kind of change that I summarize this Upanishad. Society is divided everywhere. There are differences between religions and castes. Human society is falling apart due to this. Only Advaita can unite all these. Because Advaita deals above the castes and religions. The message of the Upanishads is universal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upani?ads are rich and complex Sanskrit Hindu scriptures dating back to the 8th century BCE and are a staple of world religion courses across the globe. In this volume, Signe Cohen guide readers through on the thirteen "Classical Upani?ads," those generally regarded as the oldest: Bhadrayaka, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Isa, Kena, Katha, Mundaka, Svetasvatara, Mandukya, Prasna, Kausitaki, and Maitri Upanisad. Where most survey textbooks present a cursory overview of these texts, The Classical Upani?ads: A Guide provides a nuanced but accessible exploration of the Upani?ads that will benefit both scholars, students, and general readers alike. This volume explores the historical, geographical, and social context of the Classical Upani?ads and discusses issues of dating, authorship, and transmission of the texts. Cohen also breaks down central ideas in the Upani?ads, such as atman, brahman, karma, reincarnation, moksa, knowledge, and sacred sounds (mantras). The text also discusses the importance of the Upani?ads for Hinduism and Indian culture, as well as the reception of the Upani?ads in the West. Through exploring these works, their key characters and ideas, and their impact on Hinduism's core beliefs, Cohen provides the reader a thorough but approachable entry into these seminal texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of primary texts introduces readers to the mystical literature of the world's great religious traditions. Beginning with an introduction by Steven T. Katz, a leading scholar of mysticism, the anthology comprises poetry, prayer, narrative, and other writings from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Confucianist, and Native American traditions. This collection provides readers not only with the primary mystical texts from each religious tradition, but with an explanation of the context of the source and tradition. Comparative Mysticism shows how the great mystical traditions of the world are deeply rooted in the religious traditions from which they originated. The contextual methodological approach taken throughout the anthology also addresses the critical question of what these mystical traditions, at their highest level, have in common. Despite the prevailing view that mystical traditions throughout the world are essentially similar, the presentation of the sources in this volume suggests that, in fact, the various traditions have distinct teachings and different metaphysical goals. The writings collected in Comparative Mysticism address the most fundamental and important methodological, epistemological, and hermeneutical questions regarding the study and interpretation of mysticism and mystical sources across cultures. This anthology will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars of mystic tradition for years to come.

Book excerpt: Mandukya Upanishad is one of the principal Upanishads, and one of the most important texts of Advaita Vedanta. In its twelve verses, it pithily delivers an extremely scientific model of reality through the Sanskrit syllable AUM, revealing its depths and rich, multilayered meaning in the process. The Upanishads are now more important than ever, but even more important is the guidance which helps you navigate through them. While the ancient scriptures may have endured the test of time, throughout the ages man has interpreted them for his own advantage, which has ultimately lead to corruption and delusion. A touch of purification is needed. These commentaries with Acharya Prashant shed light to these verses and the mystical AUM, and provide the seeker with strong fundamentals of Vedantic understanding, and the correct utility of such knowledge in the contemporary context and everyday life.

Book excerpt: Upanishads are verses from the Vedas that have been compiled as independent and complete sets. Traditionally the verses in each Veda have been classified as Chanting portion and Analysis portion. Within the Analysis portion, a further sub-classification of verses has been done, namely Discussion, Research, Essential thought or guiding principle. This book gives a mathematical picture of the sacred syllable AUM and its relevance to the Waking, Dreaming and Sleeping states. The transcendental state is described as the fourth state. This book explains the crux of the verses in easy to grasp contemporary language. Contains original verse in Sanskrit with a Latin transliteration and an English commentary. For the Sanskrit enthusiast each verse has Word-boundary and Prose order with Cases. Uses clear well-spaced Devanagari font.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.
