There was dubiousness in his movements, the dubiousness of the stranger in a large town, who is anxious to find his way and, because of his pride, reluctant to ask it; there was interest too, the stranger's revealing interest in houses with unfamiliar faces, in the traffic which in foreign lands so perversely clings to the wrong side of the street.
