Book excerpt: The Symbol Dawn, the opening Canto of Sri Aurobindo's epic Savitri, has been the subject matter of many studies, and many studies will continue to appear, will continue to flourish and develop. There have been explanations and theses and dissertations written on it, any number of them, elucidations, talks, paintings, musical, choreographical presentations and representations, there will be sculptures and multi-media expositions based on it. The explorative dimensions are countless. The richness, the universality of it is inexhaustible and the creative spirit can reach intense depths or broadest widenesses or lofty heights. In fact these can be the means for endless realisations which Savitri holds for it. "It is a marvellous work, magnificent and of an incomparable perfection." This is what the Mother said about Savitri, Savitri whose "revelation is prophetic". What she said is seen in its fullness in the very first Canto itself, a Canto which got crystallised after some two dozen plus definitive drafts. Its inspiration is from another new realm of poetry: It is Overhead Poetry that brings to us the utterance of the dynamic and beauteous spirit itself.Sri Aurobindo's own early statement about Savitri is: "it is only an attempt to render into poetry a symbol of things occult and spiritual." Perhaps this symbol, of things occult and spiritual, is heaviest and profoundest in The Symbol Dawn, the dawn symbolising the appearance of a new and marvellous creation here on earth, in the mortal world. Our endeavour is to go essentially by the original text itself and see to what extent one can read those multiple layers of symbolism that are present in this rosy-fingered Dawn.

Book excerpt: Three musical sisters honour their mother with a piano recital every year in her memory. They compete with one another, practising in secret to see who can be the best. In other stories, music, food, and restaurants are themes. There is a woman who fends off a seducer by cooking up a storm; Fire Lady prepares flambe dishes in a restaurant. There is a cat called Min; an agonising breakup in a luxury hotel; a young woman obsessed with her breasts. The stories cover a wide range from schooldays and ballet lessons ('The Soul of Kate') to advanced age ('Scottie') where an elderly woman is the pet of a group of rakish young men. The style is engaging, humorous, but invariably compassionate. Introducing Elizabeth Smither as a fellow of The Academy of New Zealand Literature Louise O'Brien writes: 'I read Elizabeth Smither for the optimistic and freeing possibilities in her resistance to closure or conclusion, in character, narrative and, also, in life more broadly. Her stories acknowledge the uncontrollable messiness of life, the ragged edges of a self, the chaos of experience, the many aspects of an individual, and finds melody in the discord. Using multiple narrative perspectives and voices, moving between multiple places and times, her novels and stories accumulate the facets of a life and native without ever suggesting that these can be exhausted.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside Eliot's Waste Land and Ezra Pound's Cantos, Ulysses is unquestionably the most important literary text of this century. That is why it is both natural and necessary to pay more than the usual attention to the significant detail embedded in that monumental work. Joyce demanded that Ulysses be published on his fortieth birthday, 2 February 1922. He forced the non-English-speaking printers in Dijon to work against next to impossible deadlines, and from almost unreadable manuscripts and proofs, so clotted were they with revisions. For this and other reasons, Joyce himself was acutely aware of the unusually large number of 'errors' in the body of the book, and said as much in his letters to friends. There 'errors' irritated him so much that he even issued a number of errata lists during his lifetime, but to no avail. All editions of Ulysses teemed with misprints and other 'errors': this is about the only statement on which there is genuine critical consensus. In the late 1970s a comprehensive research project was mounted in Munich in systematically to deal with these 'errors' with the aid of a sophisticated computer program. The outcome was the 'error-free' edition of Ulysses published on Bloomsday 1984. The sole purpose of the conference held in Monaco in 1985, bringing together some of the most outstanding experts of the Joycean text, was to scrutinise collectively the validity of the changes made by the Munich team.

Book excerpt: In 1836, Mason Algiers Reynolds leaves his family's Virginia farm with his father's slave, a dog, and a mule. Branded a murderer, he finds sanctuary with his hero, Edgar Allan Poe, and together they embark on an extraordinary expedition to the South Pole, and the entrance to the Hollow Earth. It is there, at the center of the world, where strange physics, strange people, and stranger creatures abound, that their bizarre adventures truly begin.Rudolf von Bitter Rucker is an American mathematician, computer scientist, science fiction author, and philosopher, and is one of the founders of the cyberpunk literary movement. The author of both fiction and non-fiction, he is best known for the novels in the Ware Tetralogy, the first two of which (Software and Wetware) both won Philip K. Dick Awards. As his "own alternative to cyberpunk," Rucker developed a writing style he terms: Transrealism, as outlined in his 1983 essay "The Transrealist Manifesto," is science fiction based on the author's own life and immediate perceptions, mixed with fantastic elements that symbolize psychological change. Many of Rucker's novels and short stories apply these ideas.Rucker often uses his novels to explore scientific or mathematical ideas; White Light examines the concept of infinity, while the Ware Tetralogy (written from 1982 through 2000) is in part an explanation of the use of natural selection to develop software (a subject also developed in his The Hacker and the Ants. His novels also put forward a mystical philosophy that Rucker has summarized in an essay titled, with only a bit of irony, "The Central Teachings of Mysticism".
