Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Gaelic as a Specific Subject: Stage I This is a defect, but it is not a serious one, for it can be overcome by the study of the relations existing between spoken and written words. Very few languages, if any at all, can boast of a perfect system of spelling, and the Gaelic language is like others in this respect. Its system is, however, much better than it gets credit for prevailing opinions being mostly formed from insufficient knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Highlanders: A History of Gaelic Literature From the Earliest Times to the Present Day It is hoped that the readers of the following chapters will bear in mind the fact that this is the first complete account of Gaelic literature that has yet been offered to the public, and that it must inevitably exhibit traces of the natural imperfections of all pioneer works. To other workers in the same field I am of course greatly indebted; and if any of them had published a fairly full history of our Highland literature it is quite unlikely that the present volume would ever see the light. The names of about one hundred and eighty composers of Gaelic poetry alone occur in this volume, while not more than a third of that number will be found in any previous work on the subject. Still I am aware that some mistakes and omissions will be met with, but these, I trust, will not elicit so much reprehension as material for correction hereafter. On the subject of the science of language and race movements glanced at in the Introduction, the student will find the latest views in the works of Penka, Schrader, Sayce Hyde Clarke, and others. The "Ultonian Hero-Ballads" of Mr Hector MacLean and the Reliqu Celtic of the late Dr Alexander Cameron will be prized by those interested in the fields on which the great Cuchulin fought and Ossian sang. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typographia Scoto-Gadelica: Or Books Printed in the Gaelic of Scotland From the Year 1567 to the Year 1914, With Bibliographical and Biographical Notes About the middle of last century the need for a Bibliography of Gaelic Literature was much felt by scholars and others interested in that language. Since John Reid published his Bibliotheca Scoto-Celtica in Glasgow in 1832, a great many new books appeared in Gaelic from the printing-presses of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and other places, but hitherto there has been no work of reference available to guide the student in his selection of suitable books. Reid's work dealt with Gaelic Literature under several different subjects, and although it possessed considerable merit, so backward was the state of education over the Highlands and Islands of Scotland at the time of its appearance and for many years afterwards that the book was hardly known even to those who had a fair knowledge of the Gaelic language. About sixteen years ago I resolved to compile a Bibliography of Books printed in the Gaelic of Scotland from their Incunabula to the present year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the print cultures of the four principal Celtic languages — Irish, Welsh, Gaelic and Breton — in the crucial period between 1700 and 1900. Over the past four centuries, the Celtic languages of northwest Europe have followed contrasting paths of maintenance and decline. This was despite their common lack of official recognition and use, and their common distance from the centres of political power. This volume analyses publishing, circulation and reading in the four languages, particularly at a popular level, showing the different levels of overall activity as well as the distinctions in the types of printed texts between regions. The approach is a broad one, considering all printed books down to very small cheap formats. It explores the interactions between the different regions and the continuation of print culture within diasporic communities. This volume will appeal to book historians, to scholars of the four languages and their literature, and to students of Celtic studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Scotland In the course of time and events the dynasty of the Argyll Scoti from Ireland gave its name to Scotland, while the English element gave its language to the Lowlands; it was adopted by the Celtic kings 'of the whole country and became dominant, while the Celtic speech withdrew into the hills of the north and north west. The nation was thus evolved out of alien and hostile elements, Irish, Pictish, Gaelic, Cymric, English, and, on the northern and western shores, Scandinavian.
