Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Henry Irving, Vol. 1 As this book tells the story of the life of Henry Irving, it follows that, in regard to the author, it is almost entirely impersonal. So that a few words of explanation and acknowledgment may be permitted by way of preface to the actual narrative. In writing this book, I have assumed the position of a third person. That is to say, I have endeavoured to view the subject from an independent point of view. In other words, I have tried to relate the career of the man and the actor as it really was. I have invariably held myself aloof and have allowed the story to tell itself. This attitude could not have been adopted had I not possessed certain qualifications for the work. The first of these qualifications, I take it, is my sympathy for the man and my admiration for the artist. It is no mere figure of speech to say that this book is the result of a labour of love. It is that, at least. Irving was my constant friend for twenty-five years. His friendship never wavered in all those years, and it deepened with time. If I have nothing else to be thankful for, I should ever hold it, as a proud and blessed memory, that, in the closing years of his life, so good and so great a man, and one a score of years or so my elder, could wear me in his heart. But something more than sympathy and admiration are required for a biographer. This book is not a panegyric. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving Were my book a life of Henry Irving instead of a grouping of such matters as came into my own purview, I should probably feel some embarrassment in the commencement of a preface. Logically speaking, even the life of an actor has no preface. He begins, and that is all. And such beginning is usually obscure; but faintly remembered at the best. Art is a completion; not merely a history of endeavour. It is only when completeness has been obtained that the beginnings of endeavour gain importance, and that the steps by which it has been won assume any shape of permanent interest. After all, the struggle for supremacy is so universal that the matters of hope and difficulty of one person are hardly of general interest. When the individual has won out from the huddle of strife, the means and steps of his succeeding become of interest, either historically or in the educational aspect - but not before. From every life there may be a lesson to some one; but in the teeming millions of humanity such lessons can but seldom have any general or exhaustive force. The mere din of strife is too incessant for any individual sound to carry far. Fame, who rides in higher atmosphere, can alone make her purpose heard Well did the framers of picturesque idea understand their work when in her hand they put a symbolic trumpet. Deemed "a prodigy among biographers" by The New York Times Book Review, Michael Holroyd transformed biography into an art. Now he turns his keen observation, humane insight, and epic scope on an ensemble cast, a remarkable dynasty that presided over the golden age of theater. Ellen Terry was an ethereal beauty, the child bride of a Pre-Raphaelite painter who made her the face of the age. George Bernard Shaw was so besotted by her gifts that he could not bear to meet her, lest the spell she cast from the stage be broken. Henry Irving was an ambitious, harsh-voiced merchant's clerk, but once he painted his face and spoke the lines of Shakespeare, his stammer fell away to reveal a magnetic presence. He would become one of the greatest actor-managers in the history of the theater. Together, Terry and Irving created a powerhouse of the arts in London's Lyceum Theatre, with Bram Stoker—who would go on to write Dracula—as manager. Celebrities whose scandalous private lives commanded global attention, they took America by stormin wildly popular national tours. Their all-consuming professional lives left little room for their brilliant but troubled children. Henry's boys followed their father into the theater but could not escape the shadow of his fame. Ellen's feminist daughter, Edy, founded an avant-garde theater and a largely lesbian community at her mother's country home. But it was Edy's son, the revolutionary theatrical designer Edward Gordon Craig, who possessed the most remarkable gifts and the most perplexing inability to realize them. A now forgotten modernist visionary, he collaborated with the Russian director Stanislavski on a production of Hamlet that forever changed the way theater was staged. Maddeningly self-absorbed, he inherited his mother's potent charm and fathered thirteen children by eight women, including a daughter with the dancer Isadora Duncan. An epic story spanning a century of cultural change, A Strange Eventful History finds space for the intimate moments of daily existence as well as the bewitching fantasies played out by its subjects. Bursting with charismatic life, it is an incisive portrait of two families who defied the strictures of their time. It will be swiftly recognized as a classic.
