Book excerpt: Focusing on both pre-colonial and post-colonial eras, this book aims to cultivate a greater understanding of globalisation processes in the context of leadership behaviour in Africa. Analysing empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, the author evaluates the role of leaders in the failure of African globalisation and seeks to propose an initiative for change. As emphasis shifts from world control to regional and sub-regional control, the new face of globalisation offers an opportunity for Africa to grow and develop with a new leadership perspective. Presenting servant leadership as a solution to Africa’s global failures, this timely book explores the challenges of governance, resource management and regionalisation, and will be of value to anyone interested in the development of Africa as a continent.

Book excerpt: This book explores the economic and development challenges seen within post-colonial Africa. Particular attention is given to governance and political leadership challenges within Africa and how they have resulted in poor education facilities, a lack of infrastructure development, corruption, and economic insecurity. The ways in which Africa’s natural resources and agricultural land have not been utilised to drive development and economic growth are examined in relation to internal political conflicts. Broader issues, such as labour exploitation, financial leakage, and the exclusion of women from decision making, are also discussed. This book highlights poor political leadership within Africa and presents a framework for inclusive economic growth within post-colonial Africa. It will be of interest to students, researchers, policymakers and leaders working with development of African economics.

Book Synopsis Africa in Global Power Play by : Bhekinkosi Moyo
Download or read book Africa in Global Power Play written by Bhekinkosi Moyo and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa in Global Power Play: Debates, Challenges and Potential Reforms is a compilation of insightful and analytical articles that were published in different issues of the journal, African Renaissance, between 2004 and 2006. Most of the articles are from established academics, researchers, development practitioners and policymakers as well as stakeholders in Africa. Though the perspectives are as varied as the contributions, the underlining themes are the current scramble for Africa and the various development trajectories vis-à-vis those of other regions of the world. Contributors also address the continuous interactions and inevitable contradictions between Africa and the rest of the world. The various contributions seek answers to a number of fundamental questions around Africa's position in the global political economy, focusing on such areas as international economic relations, political and economic reforms, democratic transitions and consolidations, human rights and security. Though contributions show that Africa faces enormous challenges in the global political economy, they also point to the current dynamism and optimism in many parts of the continent. ______________________________________________ Bhekinkosi Moyo is currently based in Dakar, Senegal, where he conducts and manages research for TrustAfrica: a grant-making foundation focusing on regional integration, peace and security as well as citizenship and identity. His research interests include Africa's political economy, international political economy, global governance, social movements and democratisation in Africa. His recent publications include China in Africa: Threat or an Asset? (2006), The Zimbabwean Community in South Africa (with Elinor Sisulu and Nkosinathi Tshuma) and Africa and the World: 2004-2005. "This book is a compelling study of the many imponderable dilemmas, challenges and imperatives that shape the contours of Africa's place in a mercurial and uncertain global order. It brings together a range of authors who reflect on the many themes that animate the African condition, in the context of the multiple centrifugal tendencies, intense structural asymmetries and disempowering pathologies that characterise globalisation. Africa in Global Power Play is an invitation to critically engage in this existential debate and is a sterling contribution to the subject." Book Synopsis Modernization and the Crisis of Development in Africa by : Jeremiah I. Dibua
Download or read book Modernization and the Crisis of Development in Africa written by Jeremiah I. Dibua and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jeremiah I. Dibua challenges prevailing notions of Africa's development crisis by drawing attention to the role of modernization as a way of understanding the nature and dynamics of the crisis, and how to overcome the problem of underdevelopment. He specifically focuses on Nigeria and its development trajectory since it exemplifies the crisis of underdevelopment in the continent. He explores various theoretical and empirical issues involved in understanding the crisis, including state, class, gender and culture, often neglected in analysis, from an interdisciplinary, radical political economy perspective. This is the first book to adopt such an approach and to develop a new framework for analyzing Nigeria's and Africa's development crisis. It will influence the debate on the development dilemma of African and Third World societies and will be of interest to scholars and students of race and ethnicity, modern African history, class analysis, gender studies, and development studies.

Book Synopsis African Renaissance by : David Abdulai
Download or read book African Renaissance written by David Abdulai and published by ASEAN Academic Press Limited. This book was released on 2001 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Africa of today is different from that of yesterday. The Africa of today is witnessing a renaissance, one that is not merely going to change leaders and whitewash old structures. It is a renaissance that is seeing real changes taking place: meaningful political reforms, the building of democratic institutions, economic reforms, freedom of the press, etc. Such changes are spearheaded by new leadership in Africa. This new leadership has rekindled the spirits of Africans, awakening them to the new day at hand, an African Dawn. This book is about such a renaissance. It thus differs from other books that only paint a gloomy picture of Africa. It offers a balanced view, tracing where Africa came from, the colonial, post colonial to the present post-post colonial periods. Each period is critically analyzed and the legacies outlined. Based upon such analyses, it talks about the impending African Renaissance as a result of the reforms developed and implemented by post-post colonial African leadership. By outlining some of the challenges, the new leadership in Africa would face as they create their renaissance and offering solutions to some of these challenges, this book holds no illusions that the creation of the African Renaissance would be easy. The task of creating the African Renaissance should not be shouldered by the new leadership of Africa and Africans alone; the global community must play their part by creating a Global Constituency for Africa. Through such a constituency, the global community can contribute in many ways to help Africa realize its renaissance. The road ahead for Africa lies in unity: by uniting politically, economically and socially, a sustainable African Renaissance is assured. To attempt to go it alone on the part of individual African nations in this era of globalization is suicidal.
