Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two major real-world problems prompted this study: maintaining the Catholic identity of the Catholic schools, and increasing interest in character education. Traditionally, Catholic schools in the United States were staffed exclusively by priests, sisters, and brothers. Today, they are predominately staffed by laypersons. This change has influenced the essential religious character and culture of Catholic schools. While Religious filter their teachings through their own religious training and emphasize the mission and charisma of Catholic education, lay staff often lack the same intensely religious experiences to bring to the teaching/learning environment. This qualitative interview study explored the influence that a series of spirituality and virtue seminars had on lay teachers’ perceptions of the Catholic school and character education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every church has far more work than any one person can do. Even a team of professionals is not enough. The New Testament solution was for every member to be a minister. Though the priesthood of all believers was a key idea in the Reformation, it is little practised today. Following secular models, churches usually organize around the clergy, who are paid by the laity to do the ministry. Paul Stevens argues that, according to Scripture, the primary task of a Christian leader is not to do the work but to equip the saints to do it. Exploring new options for pastors, tentmakers and laypeople, this book provides structures and strategies to best equip all the saints for ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the relationship between faith, formation and education. Rooted in a variety of discourses, the book offers original insights into the education and formation of the human person, both theoretical and practical. Issues are considered within a context of contemporary tensions generated by an increasingly pluralist society with antipathy to religious faith, and debated from interdenominational Christian perspectives. Including chapters by an international team of experts, the volume demonstrates how Christian faith holds significance for educational practice and human development. It argues against the common assumption that there can be a neutral approach to education, whilst at the same time advocating a critical dimension to faith education. It brings fresh thinking about faith and formation, which demands attention given the fast-changing political, educational and socio-cultural forces of today. It will appeal to students and researchers involved in Christian educational practice.

Robert Pazmino's experiences in a South American base community and the barrios of Costa Rica are here translated into fresh and vital proposals for Christian education in North America. Showing the way between fundamentalism of both the right and left, the author brings into creative partnership an often polarized orthodoxy and 'orthopraxy'. A valuable resource for religious educators, pastors, and seminary students." - Gabriel Fackre Abbot Professor of Christian Theology Andover Newton Theological School Pazmino has shown significant creativity in bringing the insights of liberation theology to bear on the discipline of religious education. He has done this in a manner that is directly relevant to a North American audience, and not merely to those curious about Latin American liberation theology. He writes clearly and succinctly, and his book could be valuable in courses on religious education in seminars and colleges. It is a must for curriculum planners and writers, as well as for directors of Christian education in local churches." - Justo L. Gonzalez Director, Hispanic Summer Program The Fund for Theological Education, Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Healing Ministry: A Christian Education Model for Clergy and Laity The purpose of this book is to begin an intentional effort to retrieve the ministry of faith healing using a Christian education model to educate/train clergy and laity. Healing as a spiritual gift for the body of Christ is a much-neglected gift due to variables that may be altered to benefit multitudes. In my research and study, I have discovered it is the lack of knowledge in understanding the gift of healing and how to operate it that caused so many to be indifferent about it. Jesus came so that our souls may be saved and to heal our bodies. A scriptural reference is Isaiah 53:5: "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by His stripes we are healed." This sums up the purpose for Jesus coming to earth, to make it possible for each person who would believe to have eternal life, and be sound in body and mind. This book reveals some pitfalls, or controversial teachings, regarding why so many from various denominations believe that the gifts ceased during the first century. Being in the health profession for thirty-eight years, I have seen various diseases many struggle with and medical technology has no cure for. With health care benefits changing and there is a possibility many may lose their coverage, it is imperative that we go back to God's original plan-divine healing. Not to discount the physicians, scientist, and medical technology, but it is important for us to know that we have God's plan for healing. My desire is to get the message out to the masses, especially to churches to establish healing centers, that divine healing is a benefit of the Kingdom of God.

Christian colleges and seminaries have not been immune from the cultural influences shaping contemporary education. Challenging the conventional wisdom advanced by the educational debate during the last fifteen years, Robert Banks builds an innovative new model of theological education based on how ministry formation took place in biblical times. Banks takes full account of key issues raised by our current educational context and shows how a "missional model" of education is more holistic, inclusive, and practical than recent versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores a perennial question that Christians who are called to teach must consider: So what makes our teaching Christian? It considers the essential and distinctive elements of Christian teaching by examining the apostles' teaching ministry in the Book of Acts and aspects of Jesus's own teaching in the Gospel of John. It proposes how teaching in the name, spirit, and power of Jesus relates to the teaching ministries of Christians today. For example, an in-depth look at Jesus's teaching of both Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman known in Christian tradition as Photini provides insights for transformative teaching of both insiders and outsiders in a Christian community. This work is a theological, pastoral, and educational exploration of Christian teaching that has implications for both laity and clergy in their ministries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All signs point to Christian education having lost its theological location and prominence in the life of the Western Protestant church. The Emerging Church movement, as an intentionally postmodern approach to ministry in the contemporary context, may, however, offer insights to reinterpret Christian education. This significant movement in today's church gives Christian education a new interpretive framework that is theologically located at an intersection of doxology and doctrine. In her examination of postmodern faith formation, Wendi Sargeant explores the importance of the Christian worshipping community as the most appropriate setting for Christian education. Practitioners and students will benefit from the ready-to-use teaching and learning matrix, and all those with interest in the formation of faith in themselves and others will draw much from the way Sargeant situates worship as the basis for enhancing Christian formation and ethos.
