Book excerpt: From the former CEO of Ogilvy & Mather, the first biography of advertising maverick David Ogilvy Famous for his colorful personality and formidable intellect, David Ogilvy left an indelible mark on the advertising world, transforming it into a dynamic industry full of passionate, creative individuals. This first-ever biography traces Ogilvy's remarkable life, from his short-lived college education and undercover work during World War II to his many successful years in New York advertising. Ogilvy's fascinating life and career make for an intriguing study from both a biographical and a business standpoint. The King of Madison Avenue is based on a wealth of material from decades of working alongside the advertising giant, including a large collection of photos, memos, recordings, notes, and extensive archives of Ogilvy's personal papers. The book describes the creation of some of history's most famous advertising campaigns, such as: * "The man in the Hathaway shirt" with his aristocratic eye patch * "The man from Schweppes is here" with Commander Whitehead, the elegant bearded Brit, introducing tonic water (and "Schweppervesence") to the U.S. * Perhaps the most famous automobile headline of all time--"At 60 miles an hour the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock." * "Pablo Casals is coming home--to Puerto Rico." Ogilvy said this campaign, which helped change the image of a country, was his proudest achievement. * And his greatest (if less recognized) sales success--"DOVE creams your skin while you wash." Roman also carries Ogilvy's message into the present day, showing the contemporary relevance of the bottom-line focus for which his business ventures are remembered, and how this approach is still key for professionals in the modern advertising world.

Book excerpt: This inside look at the production of 20th century television commercials begins with a review of advertising’s beginnings going through the 1960s and early 1970s. The author, a career “Mad man,” recounts lightheartedly his experiences on commercial productions—both live and film—in theaters and studios in New York City, at LBJ’s ranch, on the White House lawn, along Rome’s Appian Way, in Lady Astor’s dining room and on the Tryall Golf Course in Jamaica, among other places. The technical (and people) challenges involved in producing high-end commercials for major corporations are given in often funny detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, most works on the history of African Americans in advertising have focused on the depiction of blacks in advertisements. As the first comprehensive examination of African American participation in the industry, Madison Avenue and the Color Line breaks new ground by examining the history of black advertising employees and agency owners. For much of the twentieth century, even as advertisers chased African American consumer dollars, the doors to most advertising agencies were firmly closed to African American professionals. Over time, black participation in the industry resulted from the combined efforts of black media, civil rights groups, black consumers, government organizations, and black advertising and marketing professionals working outside white agencies. Blacks positioned themselves for jobs within the advertising industry, especially as experts on the black consumer market, and then used their status to alter stereotypical perceptions of black consumers. By doing so, they became part of the broader effort to build an African American professional and entrepreneurial class and to challenge the negative portrayals of blacks in American culture. Using an extensive review of advertising trade journals, government documents, and organizational papers, as well as personal interviews and the advertisements themselves, Jason Chambers weaves individual biographies together with broader events in U.S. history to tell how blacks struggled to bring equality to the advertising industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Greatest Generation came marching home, they buckled right down to work. I WAS A MAD MAN is the story of one of those men. Richard L. Gilbert, born in New York, devoted Giants fan in the cheap seats of Coogan's Bluff, CCNY grad, soldier, returned home in 1946. He needed a job. He found one in advertising. You don’t know his name (yet) but you'll recognize his work. In a 40-year career Richard Gilbert and his intrepid staff of copywriters, designers and artists at Gilbert Advertising changed how Americans thought about fur coats, foreign languages, cars, perfume and the Vietnam War. Gilbert Advertising wasn't the biggest shop on Madison Avenue but it was influential beyond its size. From encouraging the Metropolitan Opera to offer less than full season subscriptions (unheard of till 1971) in the Met's first ad campaign; to persuading people Renault had mended its ways (a Renault for the people who swore they’d never buy another); to tweaking the tail of the Russian Bear (Premier Kosygin, we'd like to give you a free tuxedo); London Fog rainwear; Berlitz Language school, and Club Med, Gilbert Advertising was the creator of iconic pop culture images that remain fresh and persuasive years later. Along the way Richard Gilbert spearheaded the ad campaign that helped end the Vietnam War (The First American Ballot on the War; Some Toys Hate War) and helped litigate protection of commercial free speech. Armed only with a pencil, and the indomitable American can-do spirit, Richard Gilbert marched up Madison Avenue into history. This is his story, and ours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the late twenty-first century, and Momo is the most celebrated dermal care technician in all of T City. Humanity has migrated to domes at the bottom of the sea to escape devastating climate change. The world is dominated by powerful media conglomerates and runs on exploited cyborg labor. Momo prefers to keep to herself, and anyway she’s too busy for other relationships: her clients include some of the city’s best-known media personalities. But after meeting her estranged mother, she begins to explore her true identity, a journey that leads to questioning the bounds of gender, memory, self, and reality. First published in Taiwan in 1995, The Membranes is a classic of queer speculative fiction in Chinese. Chi Ta-wei weaves dystopian tropes—heirloom animals, radiation-proof combat drones, sinister surveillance technologies—into a sensitive portrait of one young woman’s quest for self-understanding. Predicting everything from fitness tracking to social media saturation, this visionary and sublime novel stands out for its queer and trans themes. The Membranes reveals the diversity and originality of contemporary speculative fiction in Chinese, exploring gender and sexuality, technological domination, and regimes of capital, all while applying an unflinching self-reflexivity to the reader’s own role. Ari Larissa Heinrich’s translation brings Chi’s hybrid punk sensibility to all readers interested in books that test the limits of where speculative fiction can go.

Book excerpt: The Upper East Side is a collection of streets and avenues full of beehives--each with its own army of bees clinging to their honey and guarding it from harm. Madison Avenue is the central garden where all the bees from all the hives come to eat, shop, and get fresh information to take back to their hives and turn it into honey. What happens when an outside beekeeper comes along, earns their trust and gets these bees to hand over all their honey to him? This is where the fun starts and the secrets get spilled. Read about the betrayals, the lies, the broken-off friendships that will never resume, and why certain ladies choose to adopt cows. Learn the full cost of being a part of this well-guarded society. Now that I am here, the Upper East Side will never be the same again. Who am I? That's one secret you'll have to find out on your own.

Book excerpt: The Road to Madison Avenue, a memoir, traces Hal Harts life from an Iowa farm village during the Great Depression to Madison Avenue. The accounts of his life range from humorous to serious, and for business executives, are instructive. His stories about working with corporate clients are textbook examples of how he resolved many public affairs issues. A major story is his successful seat belt promotion while president of a local Safety Council. The 1961 promotion influenced Detroit car makers to install seat belt anchors in new cars and police and highway patrols to include seat belt usage in vehicle accidents. Because of his auto industry background in public relations and publishing, a Madison Avenue public relation agency choose him to head a program that successfully countered proposed federal legislation to control the vast automotive industry. His Peanuts Gang and early life in Elwood, are described poignantly in a manuscript the author found forty-five years after he had written it as a thirteen-year-old. The story of his Yorkshire Terrier, Thatcher, will bring tears to your eyes. The sports story of Frankie Z will amaze you. His marriage into local society produces stories from mother-in-law problems to boxing with the worlds leading violist. More than eighty photographs, dating back to the 1920s, paint a picture of people with whom he grew up, the sports celebrities he followed and interviewed as a radio and TV sports broadcaster, and people he worked with in public relations. He veers away from his business career to include chapters on his dogs, his boats, his family and trips like visiting a Broadway singing star at her Nova Scotia estate.

In fancy offices perched high on the gleaming towers of Manhattan, right? By mythical creatures just returning from three martini lunches, right? Wrong, wrong, wrong. And once more, just for good measure. Once upon a time I was fired. Again. I’d been writing ads for agencies in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis and New York. For almost twenty years. Then one day I found myself writing them in the sometimes sleepy, sometimes far from sleepy little city of Marion, Ohio. How I got there, what I did there, and all the rest of it makes a rather interesting story. At least to me. Although Gertrude Stein famously said, “There’s no there there,” don’t believe it for a minute. She sure wasn’t talking about Marion, Ohio. Read on, gentle reader, read on...

Book excerpt: Over the course of eight months photographer Mathias Braschler worked on a project about the New York's famed Madison Avenue, taking portraits of people living along all of its sections between 23rd and 138th streets. From downtown business centers with their white collar culture to the exclusive shopping area on the upper East Side and to Latin- and African American-dominated Harlem, Braschler searched for typical and emblematic faces. "Tell me who you are and I'll tell you on which part of Madison Avenue you live" -- this is the fascinating game that comes to mind looking at these women and men, all photographed in their private surroundings. We meet powerful lawyers in their offices, boutique owners, single women in their homes, crack addicts, medical doctors, the unemployed and workaholic, people living in their white and black ghettos. The photographs oscillate from pride to desperation and form a unique portrait of The Big Apple. They show one of the world's famous shopping streets in all its contradictions and how it came to be the origin of many myths and fairy tales. Madison Avenue: the American dream and nightmare in 90 compelling black-and-white portraits!
