The 30 species of iguanas are today collectively referred to as iguanines, or the subfamily Iguaninae, of the lizard family Iguanidae. This book is the result of a symposium of worldwide scientists on the world's iguanas that was held at a joint meeting of the Society of the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles and The Herpetologist's League. Over 30 recognized experts submitted their studies of these interesting reptiles, and have published what was once unknown and unpublished information. This book was a leader in its time and still serves as a wonderful reference for scientist and student alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what is certain to be the key reference on iguanas for years to come, some of the world's leading experts offer a clear and accessible account of the latest research on the evolution, behavioral ecology, and conservation of these highly visible and increasingly endangered creatures, much loved by professional herpetologists and hobbyists alike. The book begins with an introduction by noted iguana biologist Dr. Gordon Burghardt that examines the state of iguana research—past, present, and future—with an emphasis on social behavior. Three major sections follow, each opening with a synthesis by the volume editors, who survey the current status and likely future direction of investigations in the pertinent area. The first section focuses on different aspects of the taxonomic and morphological diversity of iguanas and includes a complete checklist of species. In the second section, contributors address the behavior and ecology of iguanas and provide compelling evidence that both may be far more complex than previously appreciated. The third and final section, highlighting the threats facing iguana populations today, describes the broad array of innovative conservation strategies that will be needed to help ensure their survival. Illustrated throughout with photographs, distribution maps, tables, and figures, this volume will be the definitive resource for anyone—professional or curious amateur—interested in iguanas.

Book excerpt: The Bahamas is a nation with about one thousand islands and cays, many of which are remote and uninhabited. The unique geography of The Bahamas includes shallow banks and coral reefs as well as water over 4000 feet deep. Scattered about the banks are blue holes, vertical caves that often lead down to underwater cave systems. Blue holes are incredible places to freedive. Barrier reefs between the deep ocean and the islands often produce excellent surfing waves. The water is full of wildlife, including hundreds of species of tropical fish, sharks, rays, eels, turtles, and whales. I set out from Jacksonville, Florida, to explore some of the most remote islands in March and April of 2018 sailing alone in Sobrius, my 30' sailboat, a Dufour Arpege. I dove on coral reefs almost every day, as well as five or six blue holes. I surfed three point breaks, and I found much more adventure than I ever expected. I documented the journey in this, my third book, Journey to the Ragged Islands. I also am documenting the journey on my YouTube channel, Paul Trammell, in a series of videos. In addition to dramatic and immersive prose describing the joys and difficulties of the journey, I also include a lot of singlehanded-sailing technique, as well as descriptions of the islands I visited and GPS coordinates of all the places I dropped anchor. Islands I visited include Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island, the Jumentos Cays, the Ragged Islands, Rum Cay, Conception Island, and the Exuma Cays. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Book excerpt: Tourism has been the vehicle which has enabled The Bahamas to make the transition from a simple economy based on fishing, privateering and a failing sponge industry, to a sophisticated modern economy. Tourism, accounting for as much as 70% of national income, 50% of total employment and 40% of government revenue, is the bedrock of the Bahamas economy. For five decades, The Bahamas has been the regional model in tourism. This publication attempts to trace the development of tourism from the arrival of the first visitor, Christopher Columbus, in 1492 up to the beginning of the 21st century. The story of Bahamas tourism is presented against the background of world tourism and regional trends. It highlights the marketing and product initiatives of outstanding visionaries who have led the industry since the establishment of the Bahamas Development Board and the Ministry of Tourism. It also discusses the outlook and challenges facing the region in the next decade as well as the socio-economic impact of tourism on the local community, including some of the negative impacts suffered in the Bahamas as a result of the concentration on tourism as the main industry. Comprising 12 chapters and 12 appendices with comprehensive statistics as well as a Glossary of Travel Terms, it is the most complete documentation of Bahamas Tourism ever written. It is illustrated with over 300 photographs. It is no doubt the most authoritative publication of its kind. "Mrs. Cleare has chronicled with details the effect on the Bahamian community of the income from tourism which over the years has become the major industry of The Bahamas, and has from being viewed with skepticism by the greater Caribbean been embraced with regional enthusiasm. A unique feature of the History of Tourism is Ms. Cleare's list of those whom she calls Tourism Giants and Stalwarts of the Twentieth Century, who contributed to the place which the industry holds in the economy, its social life and its politics. Mrs. Cleare has made a major contribution to the History of The Bahamas for which we all should thank her." -Hon. Paul L. Adderley-
