Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's Blank Verse: An Alternative History is a study both of Shakespeare's versification and of its place in the history of early modern blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter). It ranges from the continental precursors of English blank verse in the early sixteenth century through the drama and poetry of Shakespeare's contemporaries to the editing of blank verse in the eighteenth century and beyond. Alternative in its argumentation as well as its arguments, Shakespeare's Blank Verse tries out fresh ways of thinking about meter—by shunning doctrinaire methods of apprehending a writer's versification, and by reconnecting meter to the fundamental literary, dramatic, historical, and social questions that animate Shakespeare's drama.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Christopher Marlowe on Shakspere's Earlier Style: Being the Harness Prize Essay for the Year 1885 In writing the following Essay I have consulted the usual authorities, two of whom ought perhaps to be particularised. Mr Bullen's Introduction to his edition of Marlowe contains, I imagine, every fragment of fact connected with the poet's life and works that has been discovered, together with some careful criticism; I have laid him very largely under contribution. In the account of the rise of blank verse I have followed Mr Symonds, who in his Shakspere's Predecessors, in three essays appended to his Sketches and Studies in Italy, and in an article in the Cornhill Magazine (Vol. xv.) has discussed the question very fully. To each of these writers my obligations are almost too obvious to need acknowledgement. For the rest, the terms under which the prize was awarded required that the successful essay should be printed; this, of course, is my sole reason for publishing what otherwise would have sought some friendly fireplace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing writers from Edith Wharton, Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot to Willa Cather, Theodore Dreiser and Gertrude Stein, American Modernism: Cultural Transactions is a comprehensive and informative companion to the field of American literary modernism. This groundbreaking new book explores the changing patterns of American literary culture in the early years of the 20th century, in the aftermath of the great American Renaissance, when the United States was well on its way to becoming the most economically powerful and culturally influential nation in the world. It brings together some of the most eminent British and European scholars to investigate how the United States’s unique cultural position is in fact the by-product of a range of cultural transactions between the United States and Europe, between the visual and the literary arts, and between the economic and aesthetic worlds. And it presents a stunning re-examination of the social, cultural and artistic contours of American modernism, from the impact of a liberal Scottish speaker on T.S. Eliot’s considerations of Shakespeare to the generic hybridity of Edith Wharton’s writing, from the influence of Oscar Wilde on Hart Crane to the effect of Anglo-European experimentalism on Native American fiction – and much more. Through close textual and archival analysis, backed up with compelling historical insights, these nine new essays explore the nature and limits of American modernism. They address such topical issues as geomodernism, transnationalism and the nature of American identity; they examine the ways writers embraced or rejected the emerging modern world; and they take a fresh look at American literature in the broad context of international modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare’s tutor: The influence of Thomas Kyd adds to the critical and scholarly discussion that seeks to establish the early modern playwright Thomas Kyd’s dramatic canon, and indicates where and how Kyd contributed to the development of Shakespeare’s drama through influence, collaboration, revision and adaptation. A further, complementary aim of the book is to demonstrate various ways in which it is possible to combine statistical analysis with reading plays as literary and performative works. The book summarises, extends, and corrects all of the scholarship on Kyd’s authorship of anonymous plays, and reveals the remarkable extent to which Shakespeare was influenced by his dramatic predecessor. The book represents a significant intervention in the field of early modern authorship studies and aims to revolutionise our understanding of Shakespeare’s dramatic development.
