Book excerpt: This thesis is entitled about the effect of heat treatment on corrosion behavior on SS316 stainless steel in simulated body environment. Biomedical materials are very important in the modern world to manufacture the variety of prosthetic devices which are the artificial replacements for human body. These artificial replacements are use in a biological system such as the human body in an effort to provide the function of the original parts. When a metal device is implanted into human body, it is continually exposed to extracellular tissue fluid. This interaction can lead to either failure of the implant or have an adverse effect on the patient resulting in the rejection of the implant by the surrounding tissue or both. The objective of this project is to investigate the effect of stress relief on corrosion behavior of SS316 stainless steel in simulated body fluid. Stress relief had been performed to the sample with two different time and temperature. Stress relief is used to relieve stresses that remain locked in a structure as a consequence of a manufacturing sequence such as machining. The sample was prepared for electrochemical test. Electrochemical tests using a potentiostat WPG1000 have also been conducted and reported in this thesis. The corrosion rates of the alloys were then compared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covered a wide range of topics on stainless steels with most of the presentations dealing with narrow segments of a specific topic. Therefore, a single theme of the presentations may be that work on stainless steels for medical uses continues and that stainless steels may be part of the answers for some of the issues facing the surgical community today, such as biological response, corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, quality and cost.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Metal additive manufacturing techniques have been recognized for their capability of controlling the crystallographic orientations of stainless steels. However, the inherent anisotropic corrosion behaviors have not been extensively explored. In this study, the corrosion properties of 316L stainless steels prepared by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing were investigated. The effects of different crystallographic textures, namely {100}, {110} and {111} on both general and pitting corrosion were characterized by several electrochemical measurements, including Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization and Mott-Schottky analysis. The results were also compared to the polycrystalline and wrought 316L counterparts. It was found that the {111} sample offered the highest general corrosion resistance, followed by the {100} and {110} samples. The origin of this trend was related to the surface atom density. The {111} surface exhibited a stronger atomic bonding than that of {100} and {110} samples, resulting in a higher corrosion activation energy and thus a higher general corrosion resistance. The LPBF samples also offered a significantly higher pitting corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the lower concentration of oxygen vacancies (donor levels) in the passive film that serve as pits nucleation sites, as observed by the Mott-Schottky analysis"--

Book excerpt: This program is focused on the corrosion, stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue behavior of Type 316 stainless steel (316SS) at 50, 90, and 130°C in high-purity water. Irradiated solution tests are performed using high-energy photon radiation. The purpose of this work is to determine the effects of radiolysis products on the environmental stability of 316SS in support of the ITER first wall/shield/blanket design. Preliminary results suggest that irradiation of pure water at 50°C results in a shift in the electrochemical potential of 316SS of approximately 100mV in the active direction and nearly an order of magnitude increase in the passive current density as compared to non-irradiated conditions. This proposal outlines a three-year program to develop corrosion design criteria for the use of 316SS in an ITER environment.
