Download or read book Red Ink written by Drew Lopenzina and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Native peoples of colonial New England were quick to grasp the practical functions of Western literacy. Their written literary output was composed to suit their own needs and expressed views often in resistance to the agendas of the European colonists they were confronted with. Red Ink is an engaging retelling of American colonial history, one that draws on documents that have received scant critical and scholarly attention to offer an important new interpretation grounded in indigenous contexts and perspectives. Author Drew Lopenzina reexamines a literature that has been compulsively "corrected" and overinscribed with the norms and expectations of the dominant culture, while simultaneously invoking the often violent tensions of "contact" and the processes of unwitnessing by which Native histories and accomplishments were effectively erased from the colonial record. In a compelling narrative arc, Lopenzina enables the reader to travel through a history that, however familiar, has never been fully appreciated or understood from a Native-centered perspective.

Download or read book Cell Traffic written by Heid E. Erdrich and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Traffic presents new poems and uncollected prose poetry along with selected work from award-winning poet Heid Erdrich's three previous poetry collections. Erdrich's new work reflects her continuing concerns with the tensions between science and tradition, between spirit and body. She finds surprising common ground while exploring indigenous experience in multifaceted ways: personal, familial, biological, and cultural. The title, Cell Traffic, suggests motion and Erdrich considers multiple movements-cellular transfer, the traffic of DNA through body parts and bones, "migration" through procreation, and the larger "movements" of indigenousness and ancestral inheritance.ĂŠErdrich's wry sensibility, sly wit, and keenly insightful mind have earned her a loyal following. Her point of view is always slightly off center, and this lends a particular freshness to her poetry. The debunking and debating of the science of origins is one of Erdrich's focal subjects. In this collection, she turns her observational eye to the search for a genetic mother of humanity, forensic anthropology's quest for the oldest known bones, and online offers of genetic testing. But her interests are not limited to science. She freely admits popular culture into her purview as well, referencing sci-fi television series and Internet pop-up ads.

Book Synopsis Pictures of Indian Life by : Robert Needham Cust
Download or read book Pictures of Indian Life written by Robert Needham Cust and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Indian Life: Sketched With the Pen From 1852 to 1881 My object in publishing in a collective form these Pictures is the same, which induced me to write them at different periods during the last quarter of a century, viz., a sincere love for the people of India, and a desire to interest others in them. And what other country has such a multiplicity of interests, extending over such long periods; such magnificent rivers and mountains; such a variety of objects to attract the Antiquarian, the Linguist, the Ethnologist, and the Philanthropist? When those, who have spent years in the country have left it for ever, how much they desire to go hack for a few days, to clear up some doubt, to ask some question, to talk to some friend in a language never more to be used! All seems like a dream: the life in the city: the life in the camp; the vigorous order: the instant obedience; the constant contemplation of the rising sun in the morning ride; the villages: the mountain-passes; the ferry across the noble river. And above all, the people, those for whom we laboured, and with whom we laboured. The features of many rise to the recollection, but where are they?
