Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative decays of the B meson, B 2!X{sub s}[gamma], proceed via virtual flavor changing neutral current processes that are sensitive to contributions from high mass scales, either within the Standard Model of electroweak interactions or beyond. In the Standard Model, these transitions are sensitive to the weak interactions of the top quark, and relatively robust predictions of the inclusive decay rate exist. Significant deviation from these predictions could be interpreted as indications for processes not included in the minimal Standard Model, like interactions of charged Higgs or SUSY particles. The analysis of the inclusive photon spectrum from B 2!X{sub s}[gamma] decays is rather challenging due to high backgrounds from photons emitted in the decay of mesons in B decays as well as ee− annihilation to low mass quark and lepton pairs. Based on 88.5 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR detector, the photon spectrum above 1.9 GeV is presented. By comparison of the first and second moments of the photon spectrum with QCD predictions (calculated in the kinetic scheme), QCD parameters describing the bound state of the b quark in the B meson are extracted: m{sub b} = (4.45 ± 0.16) GeV/c2; [mu]{sub {pi}}2 = (0.65 ± 0.29) GeV2. These parameters are useful input to non-perturbative QCD corrections to the semileptonic B decay rate and the determination of the CKM parameter.

Book excerpt: The standard model has been highly successful at describing current experimental data. However, extensions of the standard model predict particles that have masses at energy scales that are above the electroweak scale. The flavor-changing neutral current processes of the B meson are sensitive to the influences of these new physics contributions. These processes proceed through loop diagrams, thus allowing new physics to enter at the same order as the standard model. New physics may contribute to the enhancement or suppression of rate asymmetries or the decay rates of these processes. The transition B → V[gamma] (V = K*(892), [rho](770), [omega](782), [phi](1020)) represents radiative decays of the B meson that proceed through penguin processes. Hadronic uncertainties limit the theoretical accuracy of the prediction of the branching fractions. However, uncertainties, both theoretical and experimental, are much reduced when considering quantities involving ratios of branching fractions, such as CP or isospin asymmetries. The most dominant exclusive radiative b → s transition is B → K*[gamma]. We present the best measurements of the branching fractions, direct CP, and isospin asymmetries of B → K*[gamma]. The analogous b → d transitions are B → [rho][gamma] and B → [omega][gamma], which are suppressed by a factor of.
Book Synopsis Search for the Inclusive B->d Gamma Decay at BaBar by : Deborah Bard
Download or read book Search for the Inclusive B->d Gamma Decay at BaBar written by Deborah Bard and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative penguin decays of B mesons are favour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, studies of which provide fertile ground for precision tests of the Standard Model. Because such decays must proceed through 1-loop or higher order processes, they are rare and their amplitudes are particularly sensitive to interference from other FCNC interactions beyond the SM. This thesis presents the search for the rare radiative penguin process b -> d gamma, carried out at the BABAR experiment.
Book Synopsis Studying B --] S Gamma at BABAR Using a Fully Inclusive Method by :
Download or read book Studying B --] S Gamma at BABAR Using a Fully Inclusive Method written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The b [yields] s[gamma] decay represents a possible electromagnetic ''loop'' penguin decay of the B meson. This FCNC process is of high theoretical interest because various scenarios of new physics are expected to have contributions at the same (one loop) level as the Standard Model. The large sample of B[bar B] meson decays collected by the BaBar experiment makes a precision measurement of this rare decay possible. In conjunction with Standard Model predictions at the 10% level, it brings new physics effects into the realm of detection--or seriously constrains models that could predict them. A fully inclusive technique is presented to study the b [yields] s[gamma] transition as a function of photon energy, using 88.5 [+-] 1.0 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B] meson decays collected by the BaBar experiment in the years 2000 to 2002. The expected statistical and systematic uncertainties have been fully determined which enables first comparisons with theoretical predictions and other experimental results. It also lays the basis for the determination of the inclusive branching fraction [Beta](B [yields] X[sub s][gamma]) and the measurement of the photon energy spectrum.

Download or read book Electroweak Radiative B-decays as a Test of the Standard Model and Beyond written by Andrey Tayduganov and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently the radiative B-decay to strange axial-vector mesons, B--> K1(1270) gamma, was observed with a rather large branching ratio. This process is particularly interesting as the subsequent K1-decay into its three-body final state allows us to determine the polarization of the photon, which is mostly left(right)-handed for Bbar(B) in the Standard Model while various new physics models predict additional right(left)-handed components. In this thesis, a new method is proposed to determine the polarization, exploiting the full Dalitz plot distribution, which seems to reduce significantly the statistical errors on the polarization parameter lambda_gamma measurement. This polarization measurement requires, however a detailed knowledge of the K1--> K pi pi strong interaction decays, namely, the complex pattern of the various partial wave amplitudes into several possible quasi-two-body channels as well as their relative phases. A number of experiments have been done to extract all these information while there remain various problems in the previous studies. In this thesis, we investigate the details of these problems. As a theoretical tool, we use the 3P0 quark-pair-creation model in order to improve our understanding of strong K1 decays. Finally we try to estimate some theoretical uncertainties: in particular, the one coming from the uncertainty on the K1 mixing angle, and the effect of a possible ``off-set'' phase in strong decay S-waves. According to our estimations, the systematic errors are found to be of the order of sigma(lambda_gamma)^th20%. On the other hand, we discuss the sensitivity of the future experiments, namely the SuperB factories and LHCb, to lambda_gamma. Naively estimating the annual signal yields, we found the statistical error of the new method to be sigma(lambda_gamma)^stat10% which turns out to be reduced by a factor 2 with respect to using the simple angular distribution. We also discuss a comparison to the other methods of the polarization measurement using processes, such as B-- K* e^+ e^-, Bd-- K* gamma and Bs--> phi gamma, for the determination of the ratio of the Wilson coefficients C7gamma^'eff/C7gamma^eff. We show an example of the potential constraints on C7gamma^'eff/C7gamma^eff. in several scenarios of supersymmetric models.
Book Synopsis A Search for the Rare Decay B0 2![gamma][gamma]. by :
Download or read book A Search for the Rare Decay B0 2![gamma][gamma]. written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a search for the rare radiative decay B0 → [gamma][gamma], where the charged congugate mode is implied throughout. These decays are highly suppressed in the Standard Model where the branching fraction is expected to be of order 10-8. In some new physics scenarios this could be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude to 10-7. Therefore an observation of a significant signal above the Standard Model prediction could be a sign of new physics.
Book Synopsis The Standard Model in the Making by : D. Bardin
Download or read book The Standard Model in the Making written by D. Bardin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard model in particle physics unifies the theories of electromagnetic and weak interactions. Much work has been over the last decade, and this book describes some of the leading experimental tests of the model. It is unique in collecting in one volume all of the formulas, recipes, and prescriptions necessary for testing the theory and will be an invaluable tool as experiments move into higher energies. It aims to give a comprehensive exposition of the foundations of the Standard Model and its applications to high energy phenomena.
