Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines school acts in the long nineteenth century, traditionally considered as milestones or landmarks in the process of achieving universal education. Guided by a strong interest in social, cultural, and economic history, the case studies featured in the book rethink the actual value, the impact, and the ostensible purpose of school acts. The thirteen national case studies focus on the manner in which school acts were embedded in their particular historical contexts, offering a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of school acts and the role they played in the rise of mass schooling. Drawing together research from countries across the West, the editors and contributors analyse why these acts were passed, as well as their content and impact. This seminal collection will appeal to students and scholars of school acts and the history of mass schooling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of schooling from a twelve-year jail sentence to freedom to learn. John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction , now available in paperback, focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a byproduct of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down , introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. Weapons of Mass Instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling. Gatto demonstrates that the harm school inflicts is rational and deliberate. The real function of pedagogy, he argues, is to render the common population manageable. To that end, young people must be conditioned to rely upon experts, to remain divided from natural alliances and to accept disconnections from their own lived experiences. They must at all costs be discouraged from developing self-reliance and independence. Escaping this trap requires a strategy Gatto calls "open source learning" which imposes no artificial divisions between learning and life. Through this alternative approach our children can avoid being indoctrinated-only then can they achieve self-knowledge, good judgment, and courage.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic affected a wide range of global sectors, but one of the most important is education. The transition from classroom to computer screen was a difficult one for many Asian students, parents, and teachers. Since this transition, global education systems now mostly depend on online technology. It is crucial that the impact of the pandemic on education is not only examined from a Western point of view, but also from Eastern perspectives. The Handbook of Research on Asian Perspectives of the Educational Impact of COVID-19 provides the current issues the education sector is facing in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. This book investigates the issues and challenges the education sector is facing as well as the future directions needed to provide education in a more effective way. Covering topics such as academic perspectives, university-level employees, and leadership challenges, this book is a dynamic resource for students, teachers, pre-service teachers, school administrators, education providers, faculty, researchers, policymakers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is a nation that has been facing a crisis of violence within its school system for decades. This disruptive and traumatic phenomenon has had lasting impacts on the systems in which educations must exist, but the ripple effects of this require an extensive analysis. To advance society, quality education is necessary, and ensuring that quality demands that experts take a step back and look at the bigger picture. In the wake of rising concerns over safety in educational environments, Impact of Gun Violence in School Systems delves into the urgent issue of gun violence within the United States' school systems. As educators, administrators, counselors, social workers, and policy makers grapple with the complex challenges presented by violence, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the multifaceted dimensions of the issue. Examining topics such as gun violence, mental health, school suspension, student success, bullying, violence reduction programs, alternative schools, inner-city youth programs, and zero-tolerance policies, the manuscript synthesizes current research, real-world examples, and innovative solutions. Impact of Gun Violence in School Systems not only sheds light on the root causes of violence within educational settings but also provides actionable insights and recommendations, making it an indispensable resource for those committed to creating safer and more conducive learning environments for our youth.

Book excerpt: In the educational arena, new ideas often compete as solutions to recurrent problems, making the concept of "innovations" a widespread discursive term. While expectations are substantial for each innovation, implementation of ideas has shown them to be more modest in practice. This book examines innovations in several developing countries, presenting case studies of technological, curricular, and organizational innovations selected for their magnitude in financial investment, scope, and duration. The case studies explore the social and political contexts that shaped the features of these innovations and what they accomplished over time in terms of teacher cost reduction, status mobility, access to education, and national unity. The experience of countries such as Brazil, Lesotho, the Philippines, and Namibia, and the influence of international agencies such as the World Bank are described and analyzed against theories of social and organizational change. The case studies themselves also serve as subjects for reflection on the prevailing positivist approaches to research and knowledge. The Politics of Educational Innovations should be of considerable interest to students of educational change, wither in the academic world or in the fields of government and international cooperation.
