Book excerpt: In order for a student to be successful in dental hygiene education, the student must gain the required knowledge and skills necessary to perform as a hygienist and possess the ability to utilize critical thinking to apply these attributes while in the program and on the National Board of Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) (Alzahrani, Thompson, & Bauman, 2007; Fried, Maxey, Battani, Gurenlian, Byrd, & Brunick, 2017). Dental hygiene students who attend a medical university have the option to take required pre-requisite courses at a community college or a four-year university. All dental hygiene students transfer from another institution and all have the potential to exhibit transfer shock, which may contribute to a drop in GPA following the transfer to another institution. Transfer shock typically occurs for students who transfer from a community college to a university (Hills 1965; Ivins, Copenhaver, & Koclanes, 2016). This study investigates the impact of transfer shock on students who transfer into a dental hygiene program from a two-year community college as opposed to a four-year university. This study examined whether the type of institution, two-year community college versus a four-year university, attended prior to dental hygiene school is a predictor of success in a dental hygiene program in terms of ending program GPA and NBDHE first-attempt pass rates. After data analysis, results suggested that transfer shock did occur with both community college and four-year university students,. However, the four-year university group experienced less transfer shock than those who attended a community college during the first semester. Neither group increased their GPAs from the first to second semesters in the program. When comparing the entering GPAs with the end of program GPAs, both groups showed a significant drop. However, the community college group's decrease in GPA was greater. Only five students in the total population (two from the four-year university group and three from the community college group) failed the NBDHE on the first attempt. Students who were unsuccessful in passing the NBDHE had final program GPAs that ranged from 2.2 to 2.45.

Ongoing research studies regarding the morals and attitudes of college students show the majority believe that, in today's global world, it is necessary to cheat in order to get ahead. The prevalence and attitudes concerning academic dishonesty of health profession students, including medical, dental, and nursing has been extensively researched. No such studies exist in the discipline of dental hygiene. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cheating in Texas dental hygiene programs. Four hundred surveys were mailed to 20 Texas dental hygiene schools for graduating students to complete. Usable survey returns were 289 for a response rate of 72.25%. Data were analyzed using SPSS with frequencies and chi-square tests. Findings from this study reveal that 86.5% of graduating Texas dental hygiene students have cheated a minimum of one time during matriculation. Overload with demands at school was the most frequent reason cited to justify a student's cheating behavior.

Book excerpt: "Purpose: This study was designed to identify the possible stressors among second year associate level dental hygiene students, and to investigate the impact of stress on students' academic performance. Methods: The data was collected via an online survey that was composed of three sections: (1) demographic information such as age, gender, marital status, children and employment; (2) levels of stress, which was collected from Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (1991) using the five-point Likert scale; and (3) self-reported GPAs. By examining students' current cumulative GPAs in the dental hygiene program, the relationship between the total score derived from Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (1991) survey (stress survey) and academic performance in dental hygiene students was explored. Results: This explanatory correlational study used Student-life Stress Inventory to explore the level of stress and academic performance in 39 second year associate level dental hygiene students. High levels of stress were found among second year dental hygiene students and both level of stressors (p

This book was released on 2014 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem Statement: Results of worldwide studies indicate that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly prevalent and remain a potential occupational health hazard to practicing dental hygienists. Enduring chronic injury, functional impairments and associated pain, paying for musculoskeletal rehabilitation and treatment, coupled with the need to reduce the number of hours worked or need to leave the profession prematurely all adversely affect the financial stability and quality of life of practicing dental hygienists. Further, risk for developing MSDs has the potential to limit both the retention of existing clinicians as well as the recruitment of future applicants in the dental hygiene workforce. Published studies confirm that collectively, MSDs are an important dental hygiene workforce issue. It is not known how current recommendations for operator positioning and use of ergonomic devices impact development of MSDs and workforce issues among Mississippi dental hygiene practitioners. Purpose: The purpose of this study was four-fold: to determine if self-reported operator positioning correlated with development of MSDs; to determine if operator positioning correlated with time of MSD onset; to assess whether use of ergonomic devices reduced risk for occupational injury; and to measure the impact of MSDs on dental hygiene workforce issues in Mississippi. Knowledge gained from this study may help to identify best strategies to teach students about proper ergonomics to reduce risk for MSDs. Reducing risk for occupational injury is essential to ensure retention of practitioners in the dental hygiene workforce and to maintain quality of life. Methods: A 47 item modified version of the Standardised Nordic Questionnaire was developed and pilot-tested for face and content validity. The online survey was sent to all licensed Mississippi dental hygienists (N=1553), obtaining a 22% response rate. This IRB-approved study utilized a correlational design examining relationships between operator positioning and development and time to onset of MSDs, and impact of MSDs on practice behaviors and workforce retention. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson Chi-square analysis, and Kaplan Meier survival analysis. Results: Primary sites of MSDs reported by Mississippi dental hygienists included neck (74%), shoulders (61%), wrists/hands (57%) low back (54%) and upper back (45%). There was no significant difference in prevalence of MSDs between those sitting in front of or behind the patient (X2 (1) = 1.67, p=0.196), although survival analysis revealed that those who sat behind the patient developed MSDs sooner (X2 (1) = 3.92, p=0.048). For respondents sitting in the 8:00 -- 12:00 o'clock position, median time for a MSD to develop was 8.5 years, while the median time with the 9:00 -- 12:30 o'clock position was five years. Overall median time to onset of a MSD was also 5 years with a 95% confidence interval (CI) (3.927, 6.073). Further investigation revealed a significant difference between position used and MSDs reported after graduation for the upper back and wrists/hands. Chi-square analysis on positions used resulted in (X2 = 8.09 (1), p=0.004) for the upper back and (X2 = 8.29 (1), p=0.004) for the wrist/hands. Dental hygienists who practiced from the front position (8:00 -- 12:00 o'clock) were more likely to develop MSDs in these two sites as opposed to those who practiced from the back position (9:00 -- 12:30 o'clock). However, regardless of operator position, by 16+ years in practice, 80% (n=272/338) of dental hygienists developed MSDs. There was no significant difference between the early or late onset of a MSD and the need to modify patient work load (X2 = 3.5 (1), p=0.06), need to reduce work hours (X2 = 2.97 (1), p=0.08), need to take time off from work (X2 = 1.96 (1), p=0.16), or the ability to continue to work due to MSDs (X2 = .00 (1), p=0.97). Ergonomic devices e.g., large diameter instruments, swivel handpieces, eyeloupes, saddle stools, were used by only 21.6% (n=73/338) of study participants. Conclusions: The majority of practicing dental hygienists develop MSDs regardless of operator position used. Study participants developed MSDs sooner after entering practice than what has been previously reported in the literature. The data suggests that regardless of operator position used, given enough time, a large percentage of dental hygienists are going to develop MSDs. Less than a quarter of Mississippi dental hygienists in this study used ergonomic devices. Given the high risk for developing MSDs, dental hygiene educators must question whether current teaching strategies regarding proper operator positioning and use of ergonomic devices actually help reduce and/or prevent future MSDs among dental hygienists. Data from this study also suggests that the presence of MSDs may impact quality of life, but does not appear to negatively impact the dental hygiene workforce in Mississippi.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this non-experimental causal-comparative study was to determine if service-learning teaching experience affects dental hygiene faculty perceptions of service-learning benefits and barriers in the United States. Dental hygiene educators from entry-level dental hygiene education programs in the United States completed the Web-based Faculty Service-Learning Beliefs Inventory (wFSLBI) and a short demographic survey to determine the perceived differences in benefits at the classroom and community levels, and barriers at the classroom and institutional levels. Independent samples t tests and Mann-Whitney tests were employed in data analysis. Results from 317 surveys revealed there was a statistically significant difference between dental hygiene educators' perceptions in three of the four areas (benefits at the classroom and community levels and barriers at the classroom level) based on their service-learning teaching experience. In regards to institutional barriers, there was no significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that service-learning teaching experience impacts United States entry-level program dental hygiene faculty beliefs about the educational pedagogy known as service-learning. This tentative evidence contributes valuable knowledge to the field of service-learning in dental hygiene education and the broader field of service-learning in health professions education. It is recommended that other investigations into the service-learning beliefs of higher education faculty include additional health professional educators for contrast and comparison.

Book excerpt: Given the predicted shortages of minority dental healthcare providers in the United States and the expanding diversity of the general population, it is important to recruit and retain an ethnically and culturally diverse allied dental workforce. The objectives of this study were to explore why the profession of dental hygiene exhibits minimal diversity among students and teachers within academia. This study sought to describe the demographic diversity among dental hygiene faculty and student populations of dental hygiene programs in the United States; examine existing diversity initiatives of dental hygiene schools and the impact of 2010 Health Care Reform and the Commission On Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards; investigate barriers to an academic career faced by minority dental hygienists; and analyze the role of professional dental hygiene organizations with regard to minority recruitment and retention. Data were collected with electronic surveys from 309 dental hygiene directors (response rate: 44.8%), with a standard survey instrument from 175 dental hygienists of the NDHA (response rate: 33.1%) and 37 hygienists of the HDA (response rate 13.5%); and with focus group interviews of dental hygiene directors and minority dental hygienists. This study reaffirmed the low percentage of underrepresented minority (URM) students and faculty in dental hygiene programs. However, there was a correlation between minority dental hygiene administrators and the number of minority dental hygiene students enrolled and minority faculty employed. Dental hygiene schools implemented career days, attending job fairs, and career counseling as the foremost diversity initiatives. The majority of dental hygiene programs did not modify admissions, curricula, or recruitment programs as a result of health care reform or CODA standards. The most prominent barrier to academia faced by minority hygienists was the low educator salary. Professional dental hygiene organizations need to play a.

Book excerpt: The historiography of the Rhodes State College Dental Hygiene Program (Program) presents a historical journey of health care, as it relates to oral health, in the United States, in Ohio, and in Lima. This study bridges the gap between the history of higher education and the history of an academic program, dental hygiene. Prior to this study, there was a lack of research on the connectivity between the history of higher education and the history of academic programs. John Thelin's theoretical framework of horizontal histories informed this study. Seven historical leaders instrumental to the Program's existence were selected to participate in this historiography. Each leader was asked a series of 16 questions in a face-to-face interview about their perspectives of the events, issues, and challenges that surfaced during the historical journey of the Program's inception and development. The story presents a detailed account of the journey from 1971 when initial discussion of developing a dental hygiene program in Lima ensued to 2012.

Book excerpt: This descriptive study consists of a survey of dental hygienists licensed in Ohio and an interview of Baccalaureate Degree Dental Hygiene program directors in Ohio and the bordering states regarding the personal and professional advantages of an MSDH degree, obstacles to pursuing an MSDH degree and perceived need for a MSDH degree program in Ohio. The overarching goal of this study is to identify if there is a perceived need for a MSDH degree program in the State of Ohio.
