Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 70/100, Stellenbosch Universitiy (Economics), course: International Trade , language: English, abstract: The FIFA World Cup (WC) is one of the biggest sports events worldwide and the right to host one of them is a highly sought-after. The reasons for that are not only the excitement of the event and the media exposure of the host nation but also the promise of lasting effects on the country ́s economy. So, host nations and cities are expecting net gains from events like the FIFA WC (Bohlmann 2006). One important type of these possible effects is the attraction of tourists to the country (Allmers/Maennig 2009). This is especially the case for South Africa whose tourism industry is growing to a cornerstone of the SA economy and to one of the largest employers of the country (Rogerson 2009). Prior to the WC numerous predictions about the actual effects on the economy and the tourism in special were developed (Allmers/Maennig 2009, Bohrmann 2006). Next to the direct effects respectively the tourists arriving during the world cup some studies also predict a legacy effect of the WC which increases the tourist arrivals afterwards (Fourie/Santana-Gallego 2010). Hence, this essay will analyze the actual effects of the FIFA WC 2010 on the South African tourism industry compared to the predictions during the event and afterwards. The essay first outlines the importance of the tourism industry for the South African economy. Afterwards it takes a look at the research about the impacts of previous world cups and sports mega events in general before the direct effects of the world cup are examined and compared to the predictions. It is revealed that none of the partially very optimistic predictions could be reached. An analysis of the indirect or legacy effects of the world cup follows. Even if it is too early to measure long run effects it is shown that a strong effect on overseas tourism can be expected.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: C, , language: English, abstract: This essay is an analysis of the impacts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on economic growth and economic development performance in South Africa. It explores whether economic and social progresses result from the most popular football event, or if these are generally overrated. Personal research has been conducted to examine the opinion of other people in regards to numerous questions concering the economics of this tournament. Firstly, it is examined that South Africa's investments, primarily in the construction and infrastructure sector, have short-term effects on the country's economic performance in terms of reduced unemployment and improved factors of production leading to economic growth, yet people criticized, that government investments were made into wrong projects instead of education, health care or adequate housing to stabilize social conditions. Poverty remains at the same excessive level, maintaining a persistent overall low state of welfare. The second phase, involving a booming tourism industry in the country during the event, also indicates a short-term source of job creation and a significant increase in aggregate output. A benefiting short-term inflation might emerge due to high demand in the accommodation industry. Lastly, there may arise a future growth in foreign investments in South Africa because of a better global percecption of the country, leading to longer lasting potential in economic growth and development, yet harder to identify and less tangible. In conclusion, the economic impacts of World Cups do not necessarily result in the way as expected. There exist some positive short-term effects on the economy, but not to a great extent. If South Africa's tourism arrivals continue to grow and international corporations become attracted to this emerging market in the future, which is of course not perfectly predictable, there will be significant advanced performances in relation to economic growth and development in the country.

Within the context of global change the volume explores different facets and different geographies of tourism. Key themes under scrutiny include the sharing economy, the changing accommodation service sector, touring poverty, tourism and innovation, tourism and climate change, threats to sustainability, inclusive tourism and a number of studies which challenge the present-mindedness of much tourism geographical scholarship. The 18 chapters range across urban and rural landscapes in South Africa with sectoral studies which include adventure tourism, coastal tourism, cruise tourism, nature-based tourism, sports tourism and wine tourism. Finally, the volume raises a number of policy and planning issues in the global South in particular relating to sustainability, local economic development and poverty reduction. Outlining the impact of tourism expansion in South Africa and suggesting future research directions, this stimulating book is a valuable resource for geographers as well as researchers and students in the field of tourism studies.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Miscellaneous, grade: 2, University of Potsdam, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the extent to which the safety and security policy implemented for the 2010 FIFA World Cup can make a sustainable contribution to international tourism to South Africa. Qualitative interviews were conducted with local experts from the fields of sport and recreation, safety and security, tourism and economic development in order to establish the effectiveness, sustainability and long-term impact of the 2010 safety and security plan on one of the country’s most significant and fastest growing economic sectors. The results of the empirical research reveal, amongst other things, that urban renewal and gentrification have rendered certain areas in South African cities more attractive and secure and that a comprehensive tourism safety network has been developed to cater for the needs of tourists. Finally, it can be concluded that the 2010 safety and security policy’s sustainability cannot be guaranteed although its successful implementation will have improved global perceptions of South Africa as a tourist destination and have played a pivotal role in attracting future overseas visitors.

Book excerpt: The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was undoubtedly a great experience for both soccer fans and their South African hosts, and focused unprecedented and favourable media attention on South Africa. Despite the tournament's manifest success, however, its short-term impact on international tourism to South Africa, in the form of immediate positive effects on the economy, has turned out to be much smaller than expected or even as reported during the tournament - as this paper shows, using high-frequency daily data on tourism. This sobering outcome may be attributable to self-defeating expectation effects and this paper is a warning against overly optimistic economic impact studies which could undermine the short-term benefits of major sporting events. The paper also investigates the awareness effects of sport mega-events, and potential long-term development effects, by using data from electronic social networks.

This innovative book offers theoretical insights of the opportunities and challenges related to place event marketing. Book excerpt: The use of sporting and other mega-events to bring about transformation of socially deprived areas of major cities is becoming an increasingly important part of the raison d'être for hosting such events, especially given the immense costs involved and the current economic climate. The tax-paying public increasingly has to be persuaded of the benefits, beyond the event itself, to spend the nation’s resources in this way. This edited book, written by international experts, critically explores these multiple facets of the Mega Event legacy looking at the various economic, environmental and social impacts and benefits in multiple continents. It considers topics such as volunteering, participation, economics, sponsorship, ethics and technology in relation to legacy. This timely book provides a further understanding of the legacy discourse, as well as the potential pitfalls connected to legacy in relation to mega events. Filling a gap in the literature on legacy research, Legacies and Mega Events will be of interest to events, sports, tourism, urban development students, researchers and academics.

Book excerpt: This book examines the links between events and sustainability, with a particular focus on how festivals and events contribute to making places more inclusive, resilient and sustainable. Previous sustainability research in events often focused on reducing the negative environmental impacts, with a corresponding lack of consideration of socio-economic dimensions. More recently, research has begun to consider events in relation to a range of economic and social issues, highlighting the growing importance of examining events through a critical lens. This book adopts a critical and broader approach to event sustainability, arguing that scholars should examine how events might contribute to sustainable development, rather than merely exploring how individual events could be made more sustainable. Accordingly, the contributors to this edited book address how events might change attitudes and behaviours by promoting sustainable lifestyles, communities and technologies. Following a detailed introduction, the book features 16 chapters written by scholars from across the world. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

The New South African Review revives the tradition of critical, analytical scholarship developed by the South African Review in the 1970s and 1980s. Accessible to a wide readership and drawing upon authors from well beyond academia, its objective is to be informative, discursive and, at times, downright provocative. It seeks to provide contemporary comment and engage with current controversies. The first volume in the series, 2010: Development or Decline? ranges widely across the implications of the international crisis for the economy, the threats to our fragile ecology of present economic strategies, through to the state of the ANC and the public service, issues around service delivery, migration, HIV-Aids, land reform, crime, the sexual behaviour of our youth, and much more. Posing the provocative question of whether South Africa is embarking upon a long-term decline, the volume simultaneously argues the potential for a society premised upon social equality, social coherence and sustainability. This collection will appeal to both national and international audiences interested in engaging with the multiple dilemmas and challenges facing contemporary South Africa

Book excerpt: The new millennium has been characterised by several crises ranging from dramatic acts of terror to natural disasters, as well as the most significant economic recession since the late 1920s. However, despite such challenges the global tourism system has in the main retained its past vitality although in some cases in a different form. The book investigates different kinds of "crisis" and unpacks understandings of crisis in relation to various components in the contemporary tourism system. The aim of this book therefore is to critically analyse the relationship between tourism and crises. The volume focuses on the roles and potential of tourism for development and relations between tourism, environment and broad global process of change at different levels of analysis, highlighting different types of "crisis". In particular it questions the general conviction that tourism-led development is a sustainable and necessarily solid platform from which to develop local, national and regional economies from a range of perspectives. Written by leading academics in the field this book offers valuable insight into tourism’s relationship with socio – cultural, environment, economic and political crisis as well as the challenges facing future tourism development.
