Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Health - Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 70/100, Stellenbosch Universitiy (Economics), course: International Trade , language: English, abstract: The FIFA World Cup (WC) is one of the biggest sports events worldwide and the right to host one of them is a highly sought-after. The reasons for that are not only the excitement of the event and the media exposure of the host nation but also the promise of lasting effects on the country ́s economy. So, host nations and cities are expecting net gains from events like the FIFA WC (Bohlmann 2006). One important type of these possible effects is the attraction of tourists to the country (Allmers/Maennig 2009). This is especially the case for South Africa whose tourism industry is growing to a cornerstone of the SA economy and to one of the largest employers of the country (Rogerson 2009). Prior to the WC numerous predictions about the actual effects on the economy and the tourism in special were developed (Allmers/Maennig 2009, Bohrmann 2006). Next to the direct effects respectively the tourists arriving during the world cup some studies also predict a legacy effect of the WC which increases the tourist arrivals afterwards (Fourie/Santana-Gallego 2010). Hence, this essay will analyze the actual effects of the FIFA WC 2010 on the South African tourism industry compared to the predictions during the event and afterwards. The essay first outlines the importance of the tourism industry for the South African economy. Afterwards it takes a look at the research about the impacts of previous world cups and sports mega events in general before the direct effects of the world cup are examined and compared to the predictions. It is revealed that none of the partially very optimistic predictions could be reached. An analysis of the indirect or legacy effects of the world cup follows. Even if it is too early to measure long run effects it is shown that a strong effect on overseas tourism can be expected.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: C, , language: English, abstract: This essay is an analysis of the impacts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on economic growth and economic development performance in South Africa. It explores whether economic and social progresses result from the most popular football event, or if these are generally overrated. Personal research has been conducted to examine the opinion of other people in regards to numerous questions concering the economics of this tournament. Firstly, it is examined that South Africa's investments, primarily in the construction and infrastructure sector, have short-term effects on the country's economic performance in terms of reduced unemployment and improved factors of production leading to economic growth, yet people criticized, that government investments were made into wrong projects instead of education, health care or adequate housing to stabilize social conditions. Poverty remains at the same excessive level, maintaining a persistent overall low state of welfare. The second phase, involving a booming tourism industry in the country during the event, also indicates a short-term source of job creation and a significant increase in aggregate output. A benefiting short-term inflation might emerge due to high demand in the accommodation industry. Lastly, there may arise a future growth in foreign investments in South Africa because of a better global percecption of the country, leading to longer lasting potential in economic growth and development, yet harder to identify and less tangible. In conclusion, the economic impacts of World Cups do not necessarily result in the way as expected. There exist some positive short-term effects on the economy, but not to a great extent. If South Africa's tourism arrivals continue to grow and international corporations become attracted to this emerging market in the future, which is of course not perfectly predictable, there will be significant advanced performances in relation to economic growth and development in the country.

This book examines the ways in which sporting organisations engage with local communities through projects that target youth, health or social issues and act as key partners in governance mechanisms. Showcasing original research to suggest that sporting organisations, mega events and legacies are now operating as governing instruments in renewal programmes, it sheds new light on the role that sport plays in community regeneration and development on an international scale. Drawing on the interpretivist approach to governance which bridges theory and practice, the book considers how relationships between sporting mega events, legacies and local communities are evolving to foster trust and encourage participation. With international case studies from the UK, Brazil and South Africa, it reflects on best practice in relation to governance structure, funding mechanisms and partnerships. Sport, Community Regeneration, Governance and Development: A Comparative Global Perspective is fascinating reading for all students and scholars with an interest in governance, sport development, sport policy, sport management or the sociology of sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What remains of a great sporting spectacle after the last race is run or the final match is played? How can the vast expense of mounting such events be justified? What if there is nothing left behind or what if the legacy is negative, a costly infrastructure which is unused or a debt-ridden host city? The Routledge Handbook of Sport and Legacy addresses perhaps the most important issue in the hosting of major contemporary sporting events: the problem of ‘legacy’. It offers a rigorous, innovative and comparative insight into this contested concept from interdisciplinary and practical perspectives. Major events must now have a conscious, credible and defined policy for legacy to meet public expectations. The book provides a comprehensive survey of the various kinds of legacy that can be delivered, as well as a close examination of the potential benefits and practical challenges involved in each. From ‘hard’ legacies, such as stadia and infrastructure, to ‘soft’ legacies including skill development, attitude change and capacity building, the book offers both a historical case study and an innovative strategic management approach, and establishes the limits of what can realistically be achieved in terms of economic, social, cultural, physical and sporting development. The Routledge Handbook of Sport and Legacy includes contributions from world leading scholars and practitioners and features detailed case studies of major sports events from around the world, including the FIFA World Cup and ten Olympics Games from London in 1908 to London 2012. It is invaluable reading for students and researchers working in sport studies, events management, human geography, economics or planning, and an essential reference for any professional engaged in delivering legacy through sport.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Olympics to the World Cup, mega sporting events are a source of enjoyment for tens of thousands, but can also be a source of intense debate and controversy. This insightful new Handbook addresses a number of central questions, including: How are host cities selected and under what economic conditions? How are these events organized, and how is local resistance overcome? Based on historical and empirical experience, what are the pitfalls for the organizers of these events? What are the potential economic benefits, including any international image effects? How can the costs be minimized and the benefits maximized for host cities and countries? How do these mega events impact the challenges of globalization and what is their environmental legacy? Compiled and edited by two internationally renowned sports economists, the expert contributions elaborate on the specific mechanisms of the bid processes, analyse the determining factors of winning bids, and illustrate how to construct future bid campaigns. Underpinned by case studies from four continents and by theoretical considerations, the reasons for seemingly systemic cost overruns are explored and analysed, as are the effects on national and regional employment and income, property values, non-traditional economic variables (such as psychological and marketing benefits) and urban branding and transformation. The Handbook also reflects on important elements of design of the games in order to better plan, prepare and allocate resources – including, for example, sustainability issues and the use of campaigns to secure positive perceptions. This book provides an up-to-date analysis of the financing and economic impact of mega sporting events, as well as a full discussion of how host cities can maximize the benefits from their experience. As such, it will prove a fascinating read for academics, students, researchers and policymakers with an interest in economics and public sector economics generally, and more specifically, in the economics of sport.

Book excerpt: The new millennium has been characterised by several crises ranging from dramatic acts of terror to natural disasters, as well as the most significant economic recession since the late 1920s. However, despite such challenges the global tourism system has in the main retained its past vitality although in some cases in a different form. The book investigates different kinds of "crisis" and unpacks understandings of crisis in relation to various components in the contemporary tourism system. The aim of this book therefore is to critically analyse the relationship between tourism and crises. The volume focuses on the roles and potential of tourism for development and relations between tourism, environment and broad global process of change at different levels of analysis, highlighting different types of "crisis". In particular it questions the general conviction that tourism-led development is a sustainable and necessarily solid platform from which to develop local, national and regional economies from a range of perspectives. Written by leading academics in the field this book offers valuable insight into tourism’s relationship with socio – cultural, environment, economic and political crisis as well as the challenges facing future tourism development.
