Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program, a computerized reading management program marketed by Advantage Learning Systems, Inc., and student's attitudes towards reading while specifically focusing on the difference in attitudes toward reading between low achieving and high achieving students. In addition, this study describes the relationship between reading achievement and the use of the Accelerated Reader Program. This study is quasi-experimental in nature since it does not use a random sample or random assignment to groups. In order to assess student attitudes toward reading, the Heathington Attitude Scale (intermediate version) was employed. The Heathington Attitude Scale is a Likert scale, or summated rating and gives feedback about school-related reading activities such as free reading and organized reading, reading at the library, reading at home, other recreational reading, and general reading. The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests was used to assess reading achievement. These test, published by Riverside Publishing Company, are standardized achievement of reading from the end of Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each level test consists of two tests: a vocabulary test and a comprehension test. The reading passages include a balance of different genres of writing. Results of the study suggest that there is no significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student interest toward reading. Likewise, the study showed that the Accelerated Reader program did not have a significant impact on the reading interest of low achieving students when compared to high achieving students. Similarly, the data indicated that there was not a significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student reading achievement. Finally, recommendations have been presented for further research of the following:the study should be conducted using a larger sample of participants and a comparison of the increase or decrease in student interest in reading during the school year between the students using the Accelerated Reader Program and those who do not.

Book excerpt: The importance of creating lifelong readers has been always been a value to all teachers because it is critical factor that contributes to a student’s academic success. Accelerated Reader has been implemented among schools across the nation to engage students into reading and used as a tool to measure student learning in reading achievement. Research on Accelerated Reader reveals that the reading program has contradictory findings of having a positive and negative effect on students. A qualitative research design was used to investigate whether and how Accelerated Reader effects students’ perceptions as reader and attitudes towards reading. A total of 25 second graders provided qualitative data with responses to a survey and interview. Classroom observations were also made over the six-week period of the study. Analyses of student behaviors, responses, and comments led to identification of important themes related to the students’ experiences with Accelerated Reader. The results showed that Accelerated Reader did affect students both positively and negatively.

Book excerpt: This study was developed to determine the interconnectivity between Accelerated Reader and its impact on standardized achievement tests, reading comprehension, motivation to read, and overall reading growth. Historical data from 2017-2018 was taken from fourth-grade students who attended a suburban elementary school in a large public school district. Using a correlational and survey research design, data collected included: end of year Accelerated Reader Student Growth Percentile scores, standardized Reading and Language Arts test scores, growth and performance scores, reading report card grades, and interviews with parents, teachers, and administrators. Limited data revealed that the study was inconclusive. However, the recommendation is that Accelerated Reader should be used as a supplemental source to create student success in reading comprehension and growth.

Book excerpt: Schools in the United States have been using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program since the mid-1980s. A search of the literature related to the effectiveness of the AR program revealed that many of the studies were conducted more than a decade ago, and a large number of those studies failed to utilize a control group to provide comparative data. Researchers and educators have examined the use of the AR program, whose parent company is Renaissance Learning, for more than 20 years, yet there is still little definitive data on whether the system positively affects student reading comprehension and motivation to read. This causal-comparative design, in the form of an ex post facto study, examined two groups of fifth-grade students to determine if the addition of AR showed statistically significant effects on their reading comprehension. Data were gathered from both an experimental and a control group; the control group utilized the school system's literacy plan for reading instruction, while the experimental group utilized the literacy plan along with mandatory use of AR. Independent t-tests were used to determine if the treatment (AR) had any effect on reading comprehension by group or by gender. The results from the independent t-tests showed no statistically significant effect for reading method by group and no statistically significant effect for gender by group.

Book excerpt: The purpose of study was to determine the effects of the Accelerated Reader program on the reading motivation and achievement of struggling third graders. The four students in the study met with the researcher for thirty minutes each day of the week. The participants read books from their book boxes which were based on interests and reading levels. The data collected was pre/posttest format using a reading motivation survey and reading achievement test (STAR). Analysis of the data using a one sample one tailed t score post assessment scores showed no statistically significant gain. However, there was evidence of a trend toward gains in both reading motivation and achievement by using AR.

Book excerpt: This study was needed to determine if the Accelerated Reader (AR) program made a positive impact in schools, which were attempting to increase student achievement in reading. The purpose of this study was to determine if students who received reading instruction supplemented with the AR Program achieved higher reading scores as measured by the Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT) than students who were instructed using only traditional basal reader textbooks. 6 school districts were selected to participate in this study. There were 1,111 3rd - 5th grade students in the 6 districts between the years 2004 and 2007. Of those 1,111 students, 248 students met the criteria to be included in this study. Therefore, 248 students' reading scores were analyzed for this study. The findings of the study revealed that AR had a positive impact on students' MCT reading scores. There were no significant differences, however, between the reading scores in the three years 2004, 2005, and 2006 of AR students (male or female) and the reading scores of the Non-AR (NAR) students (male or female). There were no significant differences between the reading scores in the three years 2005, 2006, and 2007 of the AR students and the reading scores of the NAR students (male or female). This study was needed to determine if the AR program was beneficial to schools, which were attempting to increase student achievement in reading. The findings of this study may be used to help administrators and schools evaluate the usefulness and money spent on AR. While no significant differences were shown, the results did show that the AR students' scores were higher than the NAR students on the MCT reading.
